PRE-PRODUCTION Before working on anything I had to go under the process of brainstorming what and how to design. Finding something to commit to for the next 6 weeks wasn’t an easy decision and a lot of the choices made at this point determined most of what the final packaging was going to be designed. That being said, I am satisfied going through a thorough process of all my options so that I didn’t oblige myself to a project I was less passionate about

Choosing a product Popcorn was something I picked first but wasn’t sure until of until I exsplored my options. Toothpaste sounded fun but molding actual plactic seemed like a huge amount of effort. Juice seemed fun but didn’t seem challenging.
Hot sauce was considered but having to make the plastic would seem like too much work.
In the end popcorn beat out hot sauce because the product was simple and practical to make. I was mistaken.

PROJECT 1: LOGO

Design 116
Research Alot of my research came from the Quinn Popcorn brand which is a popcorn that uses no susceptor, transfats, or PFC lining in their bag.
Most of the popcorn logoes I’ve seen aren’t really design logos that can be used in black and white. They don’t really use negitive space. So I tried to go against the common popcorn brands.
This is a logo I found to work great and has good negitive and positive space and incorporates the popcorn shape.

I kept trying to utilize the accordian fold of my biomimicry.
Tried to be scripty but it just turned out unrelate.
I
n the sketching process I was just trying to find a way to give hints at what the product was about without being overly graphic or illegible. I tried to keep the zigzag fold in the typography of the logo and also have the terminals or counters be a popcorn element like the kernel or the actual popped popcorn. Later I found out that POPZ was already a name of a popcorn brand but the Z that I wanted was continued to the Z in Maize.
I found out later that “Popz” was taken so I changed it.
Tried to incorporate popcorn as type didn’t, make sense. Tried something blocky and modern but didn’t make sense.

hen creating the logo, I was still unsure of what the name of my logo would because I didn’t know what it would look like as a logo. At first I tried to experiment with logos that were dynamic and had the same energy as popcorn does when it pops. The problem was that the typeface and graphics didn’t seem to complement each other. So I went from having Didot as the typeface to having Kabel Black to be a bold geometric san serif. Kabel’s bold type allowed me to freely switch to an orange color without colonellogo s illegible. Then I experimented with the word maize because making the kernel s the Z emulated hiroshima the zigzag folding I was planning to use in my packaging. So I continued that zigzagging. The counters of the a and the e allowed me to still show what the product was about by inserting a popcorn kernel and a popcorn. For the color I implemented the ancient context associated with the word maize, which links back to the Mayan civilization. I played with different colors until I found the “toasty” orange that kept the logo legible.

Kernel was more visible with dark bold sans-serif.

The red was too vibrant and didn’t give the right popcorn vibe as the orange did.

aa The actual shape of maize is different from popcorn.
Tried to make the Z take less space but the type got too abscured.
I wanted to keep the proportion of the popcorn to the kernel without making it too big for the counter.
Keeping the counter round played into the typface and looked more like popcorn.

Business System I was trying to understand how a maze puzzle would spell out ny logo in one line when solved. Trying to emphasize the zizag pattern of my logo.
I tried to make the pattern cohesive through the business system but I ended up using the maze pattern.

T
he thought behind the Maize logo consisted of having the type be bold and legible so that it can be identifiable from far distances. The main graphic icon is the zigzagging folds that make the packaging unique to this particular popcorn. The zigzags are what make the packaging very versatile by making the bag be compact for eating but also expand to mix in ingredients. Within the negative space of the “a” is a corn kernel and a popcorn in the “e” to give the consumer more clues to what the logo represents. The intention was to create a logo that was simple and legible at a glance but have subtle graphic elements that revealed more information for consumers that looked closer.

Color

Color Standards This color would be the main color used for most of the applications. This orange mimicks the toasted color maize turns into when dryed into kernels for popcorn RGB: 244, 144, 31 CMYK: 1, 52, 100, 0 # F38F1F
RGB: 197, 230, 226 CMYK: 22, 0, 12, 0 # C4E6E1
Cyan was a prevalent color in Mayan jewelry that reflected status and hierarchy in society. The color used in this color scheme is lighter so as not to fight with the orange of the logo. This color can be used as a background color or complement the logo as a graphic element. Just having the orange alone makes the graphics too plain but with the cyan the audience can connect to a theme or style.
This is the color for the popcorn in the counter. It is meant to look “buttery without looking too light or too dark to obscure the orange logo.
Since maize corn has origins from the Mayan civilization, the color palette reflects that theme by referencing the colors used in Mayan wall paintings. RGB: 239, 216, 123 CMYK: 7, 10, 63, 0 # EFD97A

When making the business system, make sure to have the maze pattern be consistent throughtout the whole piece. That means keeping the stroke weight consistent through the system after printing. The density of the maze lines should be relatively consistent as to not draw alot of attention in certain areas. When creatiing the maze, keep the lines jaggy and try to avoid parallel lines. Do not make the lines 90 degree angles and try to interweave them together so tht none of the lines are just floating there.

Research Quinn Popcorn Research (these aren’t my photos) This “smart” popcorn uses plastic to hold the popcorn while still using a susceptor to pop the kernels.
Making a geometry that unfolds naturally is actually quite difficult. The issue with this bag is that when the contents expand it essentially locks the corners down. Fold a piece of paper in half and then bend it over your leg. Now it’s impossible to undo that fold. Same issue here. If we hope for something more unexpected I think we will need an origami master.
Popcorn doesn’t need a susceptor bag to pop it can pop on it’s own. Two minutes of popping, popped two thirds of the kernels in this bag with no butter or oil.

Sketches
I originally wanted a bag that could be folded to be resealable and reusable but it didn’t seem practical to repop unpopped popcorn kernels.
I didn’t want to bind everything in a box like other popcorn brands but hold it together minamally but strongly.
30
Gales sketch of how to bind everything together. It was an idea of clipping the three pack together and using the clip as a way to close the bag later.

Origami Through browsing on the internet I found this tribute to Akira Yoshizowa for his birthday. The shape of the G in Google caught my eye because it was the same octagon shape I was trying to make for my packaging. This is a picture of me precreasing the template for the pleated side of the packaging.
Almost makes a octagon shape. HAZZAH!

Robert Lang’s template for the Google “G”.
My reproduction, contunuing diamond pattern. At this point I was just eye balling the angles of the lines but later I found out that the angle is 22.5° so then I made a giant template.
This is me trying to make the whole packaging one piece but the pleats have such a huge surface area that I had to print it separately. It only takes 9 rows of diamonds to close the shape otherwise there would be to much material to interweave.
