24 hours in the life of Enrica Level Kids had the pleasure of interviewing Enrica Ponzellini, known as mum to her 2-year-old son and known to most as the Editor in Chief of Vogue Bambini. Here is what happens when you get up close and personal with Enrica:

“I had so much fun during my first visit to Level Kids. I wish my son had been with me as it’s a shop not only for mothers but really for kids!”

22

Level Kids Fall/Winter 2016

Interview Enrica Ponzellini

Enrica in 24 hours The first thing I do when I wake up is check the time and weather. I then speak to my son and husband. The last thing I do before I go to bed is think of all the decisions I made and if I could have made better ones. I read at least 3-4 articles from a newspaper and all the headlines every day. I also tend to look at least at one magazine during the day at work.

Enrica Says My job requires....

First of all, a lot of curiosity! It also requires research, style, passion and determination which, ironically, all come as a consequence of the job, but are essential.

I love working with kids because....

It’s real. They want to understand the story in order to play their part. They also want to have fun, even when you don’t feel like it ... You get to play!!!

My favourite activities to do with my son, Primo, are...

Drawing, painting and building! We decide on a theme and colours. I think we make a great team of artists, I am always surprised by the way items turn out. He is only 2 so a lot of imagination is involved! We have even painted the wall of our living room!

My favourite time of the day is....

Morning time, as I am full of energy. When I’m not travelling I try to spend most mornings with my son. I try to be creative by cooking different kinds of breakfast: American breakfast, Italian breakfast or French breakfast!

My weekends are usually spent with... My family, my husband and my son. We don’t stay in the city but aim to go to the countryside, mountainside or seaside, depending on the season. We try to do a sporty activity when we are there together with friends.

23

Interview Enrica Ponzellini Why do you think kids’ fashion is particularly prominent in the GCC? I think kids fashion is prominent in the GCC due to the focus women have on fashion. Women there really want the best of brands for them and for their kids! Also, the stores are places of gathering with lots of activities and services, creating bonds and a community which makes customers happier to spend time and money.

What do you think is the one thing children should own in their closets? I think all kids should own a striped t-shirt and jeans overalls!

How do you describe kids fashion nowadays? Kids fashion nowadays is a mix of many styles, which I am happy about! Although I wish it was a little less sporty looking as you can have a very chic style and still have practical clothes for your children.

Any plans to launch Vogue Bambini in Dubai or mark a presence?

Up close and personal You’ve visited Level Kids in August; tell us about your experience with Level Kids. I had so much fun during my first visit to Level Kids. I wish my son had been with me as it’s a shop not only for mothers but really for kids! There is a discovery to make in every corner! I loved the way the floors are divided in terms of age and needs, which in turn determines the technology, design and music! The research in brands is superb from very trendy brands to the well-known to completely new ones!

What encouraged you to transition from Vogue Italia to Vogue Bambini? I was encouraged because you can be even more creative than in a female-fashion magazine. In this strange period fashion is going through, I believe that in the kids area you still have the possibility to break boundaries! Also, I love change and experimenting!

In your opinion, what are the top three FW16 Kids Trends. 1. Space - Silver, materials, space elements prints 2. 1980s - Tracksuits, puff jackets, jeans 3. British fabric prints mix

24

Level Kids Fall/Winter 2016

Vogue Bambini is the Conde Nast magazine focused on kids fashion. It is international, both in Italian and English. This is why Dubai is one of the international cities where Vogue Bambini will have a surprise activity at the opening event of Level Kids in October!

Interview Dina Zahran

Tell us about your experience as a new mom, how does it feel? It’s such a crazy mix of emotions! I feel happy, excited, exhausted, and overwhelmed. But most of all, I feel incredibly happy; it truly is the best feeling in the world!

How have things changed in your life ever since you became a mom? The better question is, how have things not changed! My life is completely different, my day now revolves around my baby and what she needs, rather than what I need or what I want to do. My days are much more planned in advance rather than spontaneous. Newborns come with a lot of needs so I am constantly thinking of when she needs to eat, if she’s feeling ok, when she’s going to nap, wake up, etc. so I feel like I’m constantly running and thinking 5 steps forward! As exhausting as it is, I wouldn’t have it any other way, she is totally and completely worth it!

What are the top 5 fashion items you believe are essential for a new born?

Mommy Interview with Dina Zahran Level Kids went into talks with Dina Zahran, otherwise known as one half of the fashion label Dinz, about her experience as a new mommy. Dina shares her thoughts and tips on being mom and how she balances her time between work and her new baby girl, Haya.

34

Level Kids Fall/Winter 2016

Pyjamas – as fun as it is to dress them in cute clothes, they are most comfortable in their pyjamas, so loading up on cute ones is a must! Socks – when they’re newborns their feet get really cold, especially with all the A/C we get in Dubai, so it’s important to keep their feet warm. A super-cute but soft outfit – they’re just too cute not to dress them in an adorable girly little outfit! Lots of two piece outfits – cute, cotton outfits that consist of pants and a long sleeve top, to keep them warm and comfy, but still looking adorable with little hearts and cute designs. Inners – these aren’t very cute or exciting, but it’s really important to keep your baby warm!

What are the top 3-5 nursery products you believe are essential in Haya’s room?

Her changing table that is also a chest of drawers where we keep all her shower and changing things (babies come with a whole lot of stuff, so you need space to store it!)

The CocoonaBaby that she sleeps in – it’s designed so that newborns can feel cozy like they’re in their mothers womb, and it helps her sleep well – this is by far the most important thing we’ve bought! A comfortable bouncer with colourful toys hanging – keeps her comfortable and entertained while I work on my laptop or get ready. A comfortable chair for me – babies spend most of their day either eating or being rocked and held, so a comfortable chair to sit on can help!

How do you manage to split your day between you daughter and your work?

I’m lucky to have the flexibility of being able to work from home, so I squeeze in work between taking care of her. I do all my email and laptop work while she’s napping or sleeping at night, and during the day I take her with me to my sisters house and we work from there.

After having Haya, has she inspired designs for your collection?

Absolutely and most definitely! Rima and I are launching a kids line very soon that’s very near and dear to our hearts! It’s called MaHaya and it’s inspired by our daughters Maha and Haya. It’s a project we’ve been working on for a while and we’re so very excited about it so stay tuned!

What do you most enjoy doing with your family?

Nothing in the world feels as good as spending a relaxing day with my husband and our baby. We either spend the day at home, order food, and watch a movie (with a lot of pauses and breaks in between to tend to Haya’s needs) or go out for lunch just the 3 of us, and it’s so nice to feel like our own little family.

What advice would you give to new mommies?

Stop being so hard on yourself! We all do it – as a first time mom you can’t help but second-guess yourself and constantly worry and always feel like you’re not doing enough. The first month I was so hard on myself and was constantly stressing and worried, and our babies really feed off our energy. It’s true what they say; happy mom, happy baby. So don’t be so hard on yourself, trust your gut, you are doing an amazing job, just try to enjoy every moment. And most importantly; it’s ok to breakdown sometimes, we are human! So cry a little, laugh it off, and then continue doing the amazing job you’re doing!

What’s a typical day in your life like?

My alarm clock is my baby; I wake up whenever she wakes up, feed her, and pick an outfit for her for the day and get her dressed. Then I take a quick half an hour to myself where I shower, get dressed, do my hair and makeup and have breakfast. I do this every single day even if I don’t plan on going out, because looking my best helps me also feel my best. Then I take Haya with me and we run any errands that I have, both for me and for her. After that I go to my sister, Rima’s house and we work from there. I’m lucky enough to have a flexible work schedule that has allowed me to work from home now that I have a baby. My mom, my sister and I then have lunch together, and we get back to work. After that I come home and it’s time for Haya’s evening routine; bath, eat, and sleep. Then I get a couple of hours of ‘me’ time; get some work done on my laptop, then my husband and I have dinner together and watch an episode or two of a TV show, if I even last that long before I pass out! Then it’s off to bed, and wake up a couple of times a night for Haya.

...cry a little, laugh it off, and then continue doing the amazing job you’re doing!

A big cupboard where we hang all her little cute adorable clothes and dresses (that she has hardly worn but still look good – kind of similar to my closet situation!)

Level Kids Corner La Pâtisserie des Rêves

Chef Secrets Unveiled

If you’re baking at home, we have some useful tips from La Pâtisserie des Rêves Pastry Chef:

Croissant:

A croissant is one of the hardest—yet 100 percent worth it—pastries to make. With only five ingredients, a really good croissant is the result of great butter and strong technique. When you layer the dough with butter, the temperature and texture of both need to be precise. You must move quickly but carefully when rolling out the dough and shaping it. A perfectly proofed croissant is also key to great texture—under proofed dough can make it dense, while over proofed dough might make it collapse.

Whipping Cream:

If you want your cream to be stiff enough for even icing the sides of a cake and staying on after the cake is out of the fridge, simply mix in some of your favorite ‘magic powder’. Caution! The cream will get stiff in seconds, so don’t overmix or you won’t have a chance to spread it anymore! Magic Powder: It’s simply 1tbl cornstarch and 1tbl powdered sugar. Adding that to your cream while whipping will make it stiff faster and keeping the stiffness longer! Add after you went to high speed whipping!

Puff Pastry Secret:

After making thousands of puff pastry I learned all the ‘secrets’: Cold butter and very little handling make for perfect, flaky dough. It just takes practice and patience.

Choux Pastry:

For a crisp, airy shell, you need to ensure just the right moisture level and carefully vary the temperature while baking. Too little water and you’ll end up with disappointingly flat discs; too hot oven and you’ll find yourself with a tray of crunchy puffs not even the best fillings could save.

Baking Classes

Do your little ones like to help in the kitchen? Sign them up for La Pâtisserie des Rêves baking classes. Kids can now put their chef hats and aprons on at La Patisserie des Reves (Level Kids – Second Floor) which offers its creative baking class! This atelier is the perfect place for kids to learn chef secrets and tips. The youngsters will have the chance to bake some yummy favourites like strawberry tarts and other pastries. The class is split into various parts from making, baking, arts and crafts, tasting to receiving their very own certificate. Kids can have lots of fun learning how to cook and bake with experts!
