WORLD’S MOST DANGEROUS HIKE COLETTE MCINERNEY As a climber I often find myself precariously placed on a variety of vertical landscapes - hanging on belays a few rope lengths above the ground on a scree-covered ledge is kind of the norm. So I couldn’t understand why my stomach was slowly dropping to the bottom of my stomach as I started the initial ascent into the Camino del Rey this past April. I had arrived in Malaga the night before and met up with fellow Five Ten athlete Nico Favresse and producer Ivo Ninov, Five Ten’s Grass Roots Marketing Manager in Europe and badass extreme athlete who’s made his mark base-jumping and climbing. The plan was to make a short documentary about the historical and unique pathway, located just outside of El Chorro in Southern Spain. We all knew the Camino del Rey was one of the world’s most dangerous and extreme hikes, what we didn’t know was that we may be some of the last people to ever hike the road in its present day form. As we rolled into the sleepy town of El Chorro it felt a bit like falling back in time. The once bustling climbing hub was now out of vogue, and its historical and cultural significance seemed to lay entombed within its canyon walls - atrophying and corroding much like the path of the Camino del Rey we were about to approach. Construction on the walkway started in 1901 and the 1 meter wide/3 kilometer long path through the El Chorro Canyon was completed in 1905. Rising a 100 meters above the canyon’s floor, the path cuts the canyon’s giant limestone cliffs in half with another 75 meters of sheer rock jutting above it. The walkway was originally built to provide access for workers between the hydroelectric power plants in El Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls. In 1912, following the construction of Conde del Guadalhorce Dam, King Alfonso XIII walked the path and it was thus given its current name the Camino del Rey, or The King’s Road. Since then the camino has fallen into heavy disrepair and after two deaths on the walkway in 1999 and 2000, the government closed the entrance. After the closure people in the local community equipped the walkway with via ferratta – fixed-in-stone metal handlebars and cables - so with the right equipment and climbing skills people can access and enjoy the Camino del Rey relatively safely. I quickly realized I was the most cautious member of our group. While the others chose to free solo into the canyon I geared up with a harness and equipment. Speaking with Ivo before starting the traverse didn’t settle my nerves either. I could tell he thrived in an environment like this and had mastered the subtle inflection of convincing me to continue into this challenge when I looked too nervous, while evoking a touch of anxiety when I seemed too confident. I wasn’t his only victim though. Ivo would meet people along the camino during our shoot and warn them of the harsh road ahead, claiming a new piece of the walkway had just crumbled off and they should only continue the hike with the utmost caution. Ivo really knew how to tap into what hiking the Camino was really about; stepping into the unknown, having an adventure on the edge of the world and feeling elated to come out of the other side in one piece. Wind picked up as we wound along crumbling corners, revealing 100-meter plummets into the winding river below. Some parts of the trail remained in decent condition, but others were littered with gaping holes. Some sections were completely eroded, only passable by balancing on the rotting steel frames. Light faded and bloomed, revealing nuances in the rock’s feature that continued to morph as we traveled deeper in its core. From our far-from-formal inquiry with bar owners and locals who worked on the Camino it was clear that what the renovation would bring was not clear. Some said it would attempt to replicate the walkway’s original details. Others claimed the plan includes building a completely new walkway just above the original, leaving the older path intact but inaccessible. But all locals agreed that they would like to have final word on what happens and be part of the process. It’s part of their city, their culture, their ancestry. As an outsider I can understand the merits of both approaches. The current state of Camino’s instability - and the skill you need to navigate the trail - remind the hiker of the undeniable passage of time and the region’s storied history. But making it more accessible to people brings a gift to the greater population – and also removes some of the challenges that left such an impression on me. Perhaps it’s best you get there and try it yourself.
