Crossing the boundary between Nature and Architecture

An environmental architecture design using the Montage technique

Abstract Over-urbanization has caused drastic degradation of the environment. This situation has a negative impact on the quality of life in cities. In the 20th century, in order to seek pure function, the ecological were widely recognized as two opposite objects, having a clearly line of demarcation between them.

In other words, building was not only the key medium to provide a perfectly harmonious environment into building has become a major contemporary issue, having a direct impact on architecture.

and juxtaposing to reorganize site context, human activities and environmental factors can create a space which provide a perfect balance for both mankind and local ecology. This design project will operate a building design in the Gleadless Valley through montage, as a way

1 Introduction Research Question

language as a design tool. and nature?

Research Context

The project will present a literature review on related issues, including montage, architectural design, the natural environment and the site, followed by a discussion of relevant precedents. The issue diagram shows the relationship and the connection between these main topics, as well as the sub-issues.

2 Transition

Methods of montage of complexity for the lower level of these approaches, which means the higher types can combine and integrate to create greater notions. The feature of each method can be summed

montage is the movement of organising those elements and trying to produce a direct association. Intellectual montage is the highest level that focuses on metaphor. In architectural design, these could be regarded as the principles during the design process.

Three main stages of montage Eisenstein divides montage into three main stages. These could be translated/corresponded to architectural language/method, as the diagram

Montage Techniques in Architectural design

These movements are based on the montage techniques and have the potential to be transformed into and used in architectural design. Each technique demonstrated its own principle with an example, however there are more possibilities of application. They can also be employed as a combination.

3 Site - Gleadless Valley Gleadless Valley 2050 Gleadless Valley is also the site of the studio project; this project will follow this Masterplan proposal

although Gleadless is almost covered with different scales of green space, buildings in the Valley with nature’ is a primary issue and other sub-issues are also related to it.

The housing typology design has an impact on the interaction between people and nature. These a result, eliminating some barriers would help to encourage and improve the sense of neighborhood.

Relationship

4 Design Gleadless Valley from 2013 to 2050 The Street Event and The Community Pavilion.

Phase 1. Outline (Depicting the object)

green space and housing area, public building

Phase 1

Phase 2. Micro-Montage (Connecting different ‘fragments’ and ‘scenes’)

activities/workshops in order to complete the have the features of encouraging people have more interaction with nature and they are set in a context where other studio projects located.

Phase 2

Phase 3. Synchronization (Discovering a new interpretation) Each activity is like a scene, the active resident roaming in the site. The spectator could be inspired and reinterpret their living environment through the strolling experience. The new interpretation may come from association, in a spatial montage form. In addition, learning from nature by interacting with the environment would be another important inspiration for the spectator.

Phase 3

between the community and the main green area. The huge green space was recognised as a Site

it could be a trigger to encourage people to access natural environments around their daily life.

Path in “Filmmaking”

Path in “Architectural Design”

Path in “Expanded Cinema”

Creating successive spatial experience around the site, through a continuous architectural and environmental space to have a special experience during the process. Moreover, this experience will vary with time, due to the different scene of nature.

Organising a causal relationship environmentally and people, space and space, space by the connection in a spatial montage way. Moreover, each space-fragment is related to the other in the context and still keeps its own individual features.

Simple form, Organic orientation

for different function individually. Moreover, when gathering them together, the pavilion becomes easy to approach pavilion.

Between Inside and Outside

Space with no intention There is no certain function set for the usage of this pavilion in order to enables the community to organise and integrate by their own. Through the simple shape, it is easier to hold many types of events and activities with different themes.

Applying the montage techniques in architectural design The montage techniques in architectural design are applied in this pavilion design.

The Shady Corner

Hulme Community Garden Centre

The {Shady Corner} is a collaborative project for Hulme Community Garden Centre. It is designed and built by Live Project 04 with help of the HCGC volunteers. The structure provides shade for plants in the extended sales area, and creates a link with the existing community gardens. It is built using reclaimed materials and waste products found on site. The curved timber structure is situated adjacent to the main road and it attracts attention to the garden centre whilst providing shady with waste and natural materials.
