Every year the Children’s Hospital at Westmead treats hundreds of children throughout NSW who suffer from life changing conditions including acquired brain injury, cerebral palsy and spina bifida. No words can describe the strength and determination required by, not only these brave young people, but also their families and the staff at Westmead. The facilities and programs at the hospital are exceptional, but every child longs for friendship, normality, connection and a sense of independence. Camp Lionheart started more than 10 years ago and was originally initiated by The Children’s Hospital at Westmead through the support of the Lions Club of Carlingford Dundas. In 2015 Camp Lionheart decided to step it up a notch and become an incorporated charity with its own board made up of members from a variety of backgrounds all brought together by a shared purpose. Camp Lionheart is an integral function of the Kids Rehab Department of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. We believe that children with disabilities live a solitary life away from the every day activities and development their peers experience. Often times their level of care is so great that enjoying a simple activity is not so simple, and enjoying this activity with a mate almost impossible. We believe that a well supported camp where the children are supervised by the right people should happen frequently so they can stay connected and not miss out due to a lack of resources. We believe in building a rainbow. We believe in friendships. We believe it matters.
OUR VALUES OUR VISION At Camp Lionheart we believe that our every action and also those we partner with should demonstrate innovation, embrace change and be always driven by a passion for service, for giving and to be the best we can.
To provide financial assistance for recreation and leisure activities, camps and other programs, facilitated by Kids Rehab staff of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead to enable primary school-aged children with disabilities to participate in recreation and social activities with their peers in order to help in their personal development.

ABOUT THE CAMP There are hundreds of outpatients who are treated at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead every year. At present the Kids Rehab Department of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead runs Camp Lionheart once a year over a period of two days for an average group of 20 children aged between 7 and 12 years. This is not even 7% of the children who attend the hospital and who would be suitable to attend camp. The 2 day program last year was filled with fun activities that included archery, a science lesson, sailing and flying fox. In order for the camp to take place a great deal of preparation and resources are required before, during and after the camp to ensure that the experience is cherished and memorable. Every year a program is developed by the Kids Rehab Recreation Officer that seeks to help children achieve the following: • Build their self-esteem • Develop their motor skills • Enhance their resilience • Learn about their environment • Value team work Our vision is to not only ensure that the camp in 2015 goes ahead but to provide sufficient financial support to allow for the development of additional programs and promotional activities to ensure that the camp is experienced by as many of the children as possible.
Our Gala Spring Carnival 30 October 2015
This year we are planning to put on one very special fundraising Gala event that will launch not only our first year as the new Camp Lionheart but will also have as guests our new corporate sponsors, supporters and promoters. Given the event is so close to Melbourne Cup we thought it would be befitting to have a spring carnival theme to get everyone in the mood!
Tonight’s MC Steven Edge Between 1971 and 1984, Steven played over100 first grade games with St George, including premiership wins in 1977 (as captain) and in 1979. He then moved to Parramatta again playing over 100 first grade games with premierships in 1981, 1982 and 1983 - all as captain. He has also represented City, NSW and Australia. Steven holds a B Comm degree majoring in Accounting and Financial Management from UNSW.

Raul Vellani When Raul was only five, his father gave him a small magic kit that ignited his passion for magic. Raul does a great deal of magic at charity events. In 2014, Raul became the New South Wales Lions Youth of the Year. After several levels of competition, he won both the overall prize and the public speaking trophy. Raul believes that his passion for magic has given him the edge with his public speaking because it has helped him become comfortable speaking on stage using a microphone.
Slide McBride “Slide McBride”, formed in 1988, is the band name and also the name of the main singer who also plays the trombone, trumpet, ukulele, bass guitar and the harmonica. With him are Rod McFarland on acoustic bass, electric bass and vocals, Blake Keep on guitar and saxophone, and Cameron Gregory on drums and vocals.
Tahir Biligic Turkish-born, Bankstown-raised Tahir is turning his personal history in southwest Sydney to his professional advantage. Tahir played Habib Halal in Fat Pizza. The name Habib has become an unofficial placeholder term for ‘mate’ and his character’s catchphrase ‘fully sick’ is very much part of our new vernacular, the way ‘cobber’ used to be. Then take into account the Hollywood-ensconced Rebel Wilson played his girlfriend on Fat Pizza and, arguably, Tahir is one of Australia’s most influential comedians of the last 20 years.

There is not a single person in our community who would not have had a son, daughter, grandchild, niece, nephew or even a child of a friend who did not need to attend the hospital to obtain either short or long term care at some point in their lives. Camp Lionheart is a charity that wants to make a difference for the children in our community and we need your help.
