A New Year Well on the Way The 2nd half of my term is now progressing at a rapid rate. In progressing December the Club’s Christmas Party was held on Friday 9th December at the Lighthouse Restaurant, Parramatta. Around 30 members, wives and partners attended this function. A great time was enjoyed by all those present. Christmas Hampers were purchased to the value of $1,600. These were assembled at Steve and Debbie’s home. Michael Maughan contributed $300 towards the cost of the hampers and Medronic donated $250. My sincere thanks to both Michael and Tanya. The hampers were duly distributed by teams of two and I am sure they were gratefully received by the recipients. Jeannette Potts and Libby Booth held a Lions Ladies Candlelight Supper. About 15 ladies were present. Around $700 was raised which included cash and candle products which were donated as raffle prizes to the Club. Many thanks to Jeannette & Libby for arranging and holding this soiree. The President’s Dinner was again held at Robyn & David Evans residence on Saturday 14th January. 30 people attended this function which always proves to be an ideal time for socialising and relaxing with fellow Lions and partners. My thanks and appreciation to Robyn & David for opening their home for a successful and entertaining evening.

tributed their time and efforts and especially to Ray Steele, our barbecue king, who devoted so much time to the organising and running of the barbecues. In March two barbecues were held. On 20th March at the Nurses Foundation with a net profit of $850 and on 24th March, our first barbecue to be held at Carlingford Court with a net profit of $410. Youth of the Year is again up and running. Our club contest was held on 6th March at our new venue, Carlingford Bowling Club. My thanks to David Evans who organised the contest. Our Club hosted the District Final (attended by 120 people) at Bankstown Sports Club on 31st March. This evening was ably conducted by District Chairman, Brian Curran. Guests enjoyed a wonderful evening with a very high standard of youth participating. The winners were Becky Bunting (Roseville College) and Khushaal Vyas from Sydney Boys High for the Public Speaking award. Special thanks must be given to Brian, Clem and Peter who put so much effort into making the evening a successful one. Net profit from raffles on the night was $580.00 The Club is being involved in overseas aid. The first is support for the Phuket Sunshine Village Foundation ($1000) and the second is support to help International Inc. ($980 for 2 children). The third is another child sponsored by the Club for Education Builds Bridges ($180 for an additional child).

Disadvantaged Kids’ Camp You will recall that we sponsored a local boy to the Disadvantaged Kids’ Camp conducted in January by the Lions Club of Wyong. This is the second year we have participated and I have no doubts that, from the enthusiasm displayed by the two participants over the two years, it is money well spent. This year I asked Deran’s dad if he (Deran) could put something together in his own words for me to publish along with the photos of Deran, his dad and his sister in The Pride. Deran has done just that and his dad has given the OK to publish. Deran also provided some photos from the Camp. The group photo below gives some indication of the popularity of the Camp as there are 20+ kids who got to go. (I have done my best with this photo to maintain the privacy of the other children). There were a few more photos which Deran provided but unfortunately, I cannot print these as we do not have the permission of the other children’s parents. In the morning I had to wake up early so that I would be on time for the bus. Once I got on the bus the first person I met was drew we were talking to eac other until we finally arrived at our campsite. We started setting up tents and then we ate before we when to bed. The next morning we got up and got on the bus and drove to Borenore caves, it was so much fun walking through the caves because it was so dark and rocky we had to use torches to see where we were going and played around until we got back to our camp site. The next day we went to Lake Canobolis where I had found a huge yabby we also went for a swim in the lake. The next day we went to see the orchids where we learned about different types of fruit and we were allowed to eat some!!! On the final day we visited Dubbo zoo, we got to see heaps of animals like lions, elephants and lots of others. It was so sad when the camp ended because I made a lot of friends and I was going to miss them. It was the best camp I ever went to. Thank you lions Club From Deran Halil

Overseas Aid As mentioned in President Peter’s Report, we have taken on board a couple of overseas aid projects, viz Phuket Sunshine Village Foundation ($1000), HELP International Inc. We have received acknowledgements from these organisations for this assistance.

Guest Speakers February The guest speaker at our February 7th meeting was Harry Snodgrass who is associated with HELP Foundation Inc. which operates an orphanage in Bangladesh. Bangladesh has a population of 140 million but is only the size of Victoria. There are approximately 3000 people per square mile. It is a very poor country with 35% unemployment and a predominantly Muslim (96%) population, with minorities of Hindu, Buddhist and Christians. The country is very flat and easily flooded. Only half of the children attend school. The average income is about $800 per year. Health care is non existent and the average life span is 56 years.

Harry Snodgrass from HELP Foundation Inc. being presented with Certificate of Appreciation by Jeanette Potts

Harry’s speech was well received with many questions being asked. In conclusion, Harry was presented with a cheque for $980 from the Club to support 2 children (1 boy and 1 girl).

Harry told us the Foundation was first established by David Halder in his 4 bedroom home. Initially 130 children were living in the house which stood on 7 acres of land. Now a 3 storey dormitory has been built, housing 100 boys and 100 girls. $1.5K needed to be raised to extend facilities. Sponsors were from America, Netherlands and Australia. Now there are 437 in the home and a primary school with 600 children.

Peter Adney

There is a Christian Home Chapel and all children are taught Christian values. A medical centre has also been established and micro credit programs have been formulated where 2000 people benefit. The Australian connection donates $150,000 of which only 1% costs are involved. HELP stands for Health Education Leadership & Program.

Christmas Cakes, Puddings, Mints & Fudge This was the position as at the end of February, as given to me by Treasurer Peter.

“We are still to receive the proceeds of the cakes, puddings sold by the Nurses Association and we expect to get their remittance this week. Overall when this is received we would have sold some 468 cakes & puddings (some 42 cartons) being: 1kg cakes 186 1.5kg cakes 146 Puddings 136

At The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, we sold 133 cakes & puddings which were a few more than last year. Overall, allowing for stock on hand, our profit will be approx. $1,300 on actual cakes & puddings sold. Regards Peter”

Candlelight Supper

Friday the 13th and Friday the 13th and no, it was not a witches’ coven but witches’ but a delightful candlelight supper Hyacinth Bucket style (minus the dramas). A group of Lions (female of course), ladies and friends arrived at Libby’s home to a lovely atmosphere of flickering candles of all shapes and sizes, in an amazing array of containers and holders. What a lovely ambience and cosy feeling as we entered to be welcomed by Libby and Jeannette who had gone to so much trouble setting up the display, not to mention the delicious canapés, champagne, wine, juice etc. we were offered on arrival and throughout the evening. Jeannette did a great job making sure we were all “topped up” and had plenty to eat. Our demonstrator from PartyLite gave an interesting talk on all aspects of choosing, buying and caring

for candles and yes, there is a right and wrong way to for candles and there right and extinguish them! As you can see from the photos, we were all busy pouring over our catalogues trying to decide what to buy from the vast range of products. This was followed by a delicious supper complete with fine bone china but thankfully none with hand painted periwinkles or we would have all been nervous wrecks!! I personally would like to thank Libby and Jeannette for such an entertaining evening. I know they are both very busy people and can appreciate the time and effort that went into organising the night. As well as having a good time, a nice profit was made which made it all worthwhile. Youth of the Year - Club, Regional and District Finals Club Judging

Carlingford- Dundas Lions were, once again, delighted to participate in the Youth of the Year Quest. After a few false starts, Club judging took place on Sunday, 4th March and at our Dinner meeting on 6th March 2012. Members did not participate in the “Sunday” part of the judging as this is when the young contestants face the judging panel for an interview lasting 30-40 minutes – a daunting experience in itself, before coming before the assembled multitude at a Club meeting to compete in the second phase of the Quest- Public Speaking.

It was somewhat disappointing to hear on Saturday night before the interviews that one of the contestants had withdrawn from the competition but the two young men still in the Quest acquitted themselves brilliantly and were a credit to themselves, their parents and their schools. As has been said many times before, there can only be one winner, and on this occasion William Caicedo, a student at Cumberland High School overcame the talents of Mark Mesiha, a student at St. Bishoy Coptic Ortodox College, Mt Druitt. These two young men, one of Ecuadorian background and one Egyptian, will go far in their adopted land.

Regional 6 Final William represented Carlingford-Dundas at the Regional Final hosted by City of Ryde Lions the following night, Wednesday, 7 March, against six other outstanding candidates but was unable to repeat his success with Jordan Lane emerging victorious at the Regional level, and also picking up the Public Speaking prize.

On the Sick List We wish a speedy recovery to our ladies, Sigrid and Romy who have been through the wars in recent times. Ladies, please all get well soon and we look forward to seeing you again soon. In addition, Brian seems to have an eye for medical problems. When I picked him up recently in Parramatta he was wearing an eye patch that any old pirate would have been proud of. Still, it was all for the better – at least on that occasion. Hang in there, Brian. On most occasions, I need to rely on members to let me know if anyone is on the sick list. So, if there is someone else out there whom I have overlooked or of whom I have not been informed, then I, on behalf of the Club, as usual apologise and wish you a speedy recovery.
