HART JAMES Hart James is an abstract landscape painter who lives and works in Olympia, Washington. Communing with nature from a young age, James intuitively connects to her environment by spending extensive time outdoors and creating vibrant, expressive landscapes in oil and charcoal. Inspired by the vistas of the Pacific Northwest, her lush scenes emphasize fresh bodies of water pulsing through the pines, which imbue the work with a sense of raw beauty and power. Her bold and spirited canvases are earthly representations of the untamed energy of nature and the quiet essence of place. Instinctively rendering the geological forces around her, James breathes animistic qualities into the flora that emerges from the forest floor. Engaged in rhythmic movement while she works, James invigorates each piece with vitality, joy, and an exuberance of Fauvist color, resulting in a meditative yet active composition. By interpreting organic forms with immediacy in her stimulating application of paint, James elevates and mediates our experience of the natural world. Hart James studied with Anne Truitt, Vera Berdich, and Ed Paschke at the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Francisco Art Institute, and Northwestern University. She has been an artist in residence at Ox-Bow School of Art, the Morris Graves Foundation, and Seaside, Florida. In 2017, James was awarded a Vermont Studio Residency fellowship.
