Jivan Lee: Constant / Change With a growing reputation for his masterful approach to conveying the visceral experience of the landscape, Jivan Lee’s newest work manifests his deep interest in the formations of the land around him as subject matter that is in a constant state of transformation. His remarkable talent for capturing this essence of the land is making him a leading figure of contemporary landscape painting whose work is increasingly widely collected. As the activated, painterly surfaces of his art suggest, Lee’s mode of painting enlists his whole body in its creative enterprise. Rendered in thick paint and luscious color, Lee’s extraordinary New Mexico vistas hint at a muscular exploration into the raw material of paint itself, conjoined with an unlimited passion for the land that surrounds him, which makes tangible his sense of awe at the immaterial experience of his surroundings. Painted onsite from direct observation among the great mountains, rivers, and sunsets of New Mexico, Jivan’s art is a visual testament to his close personal engagement with that land and, in particular, the way it changes from moment to moment. He delights in conveying the way light itself colors the land, and how those colors shift through different times of day and different times of year. As the seasons change, Lee pays close attention to the way time affects the land around him and how it illuminates water, brush, clouds and adobe with different coloration and degrees of light and shade. By design, Lee’s plein air practice requires him to paint the land as it transforms before him: the sunrise as it begins to illuminate the earth in the morning, or perhaps an afternoon storm as it gathers strength and then unloads or dissipates. Even beyond these momentary shifts, Lee is also concerned with the way the land exists as an accumulation of these subtle changes that take place over thousands of years: the way a river carves a valley, or in the gradual formation of forests and mountain ranges. Within Lee’s painting, the sense of activity and motion suggests that his canvases are but snapshots of the ceaseless metamorphosis of the land and encapsulate the transformations that bespeak its beauty. 2
