MAURICE GOLUBOV Artist of the Fourth Dimension FEBRUARY 16 - MARCH 16 | 2024 Maurice Golubov (1905-1987) pushed the boundaries of Abstract Expressionism during America’s golden age of Modern Art. He is recognized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum as a Modern Master. Having escaped the Russian Pogroms as a boy, he spent his younger days as a full-time commercial artist in New York City. He first studied art in the 1920s by taking evening drawing classes. By the late 1930s he developed his work in both abstraction and figuration. After a solo exhibition at the Artists’ Gallery in 1941, he was invited by Alice Trumbull Mason and George L.K. Morris to join the American Abstract Artists. In 1943, Golubov had the first of three solo shows at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina and in the late 1940s, the legendary art dealer, Betty Parsons, gave the artist two solo exhibitions. Recognition of Golubov's work continued with its inclusion in the Whitney Museum’s 1951 Annual Exhibition of Contemporary American Sculpture, Watercolors, and Drawings. That same year, his work was exhibited at the Whitney Annual of American Painting. In 1962, Golubov’s work was featured in the Museum of Modern Art's "Recent Painting USA: The Figure." By the late 1940s, most of Golubov’s work was abstract. In 1975 he began representation with Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York and in 1980 was given his first major museum retrospective presented by the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC, which traveled to other museums, including the Jewish Museum in New York. Decades later, Golubov's work continues to retain a freshness, a liveliness, and an energy that is both playful and serious, sensuous and thoughtful - and most of all - passionate.

“If you can imagine a point moving, it becomes a line. A line becomes a surface, and a surface becomes a cube. And if you move a cube, well this is infinate already. Because it suggests Freedom.”
