Fritz Scholder | Works on Paper Fritz Scholder (1937-2005) is a pivotal figure in American art history, credited with reimagining the portrayal of Indigenous people in contemporary art. Moving away from the traditional, romanticized stereotypes that had dominated previously in American art, Scholder instead applied the visual languages of German Expressionism and Pop Art to convey the contemporary reality of Indigenous people. As his career continued, Scholder’s art broadened to reveal his wide-ranging interests in mythology and the occult — topics that extended Scholder’s imagery into mythic realms rich with spiritual and psychological metaphor. This exhibition highlights the wide scope of Scholder’s works on paper, including drawings, collages, and paintings on paper, as well as examples of his contributions to printmaking in lithography, serigraphy, linocut, monotype, etching, and aquatint. His boldness as an artist is in full focus in his works on paper, which allowed him the opportunity to experiment with subject matter, composition, and process independently from his paintings on canvas. These works played a critical role within his artistic practice throughout his career. Scholder (Luiseño) was born in Breckenridge, Minnesota, in 1937. Scholder studied at Sacramento City College with the celebrated Bay Area artist Wayne Thiebaud, who exposed him to the Pop Art movement and arranged his first solo exhibition. Scholder’s career took flight in the mid-1960s while teaching at Santa Fe’s Institute of American Indian Arts. In 2008, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian mounted posthumously an unprecedented dual-city career retrospective in both New York City and Washington, DC. Scholder’s work is the subject of numerous publications and is included in the collections of more than 120 museums in the United States, including the National Museum of American Art in Washington, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
