Music: Then vs Now
70’s
2010's
One of the first and biggest examples of music and fashion being connected was back in the late 70’s when the punk revolution began and a whole new genre of music was born. Bands such as The Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned burst onto the music scene with their loud and anti-establishment sound. It soon gained a lot of attention from the public and it became very popular and it resonated especially with teens and young adults who either felt they did not fit in within society or those that didn’t want to. With this wild and rebellious sound came the raw and edgy style of punk that is still found to this day. Punk fashion usually consists of offensive or band related t shirts, leather jackets, Dr martens, a lot of tartan and various music patches all over their outfits. As well as this brightly coloured hair in crazy and unique styles such as a mohawks were extremely common. Some icons from this era include Johnny Rotten, Joe Strummer and David Vanian.
80’s
In the 80’s, from punk the world received a new genre of music that as well bought a whole subculture to the table. Starting with bands such as Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Cure, however often being pinned to the Bauhaus single Bela Lugosi’s Dead, the post punk and gothic rock music scene was created in the late seventies and burst into the 80’s with their gloomy and dark sound. It became very popular with people both who wanted to express themselves and who wanted to stand out from the crowd. There are many different styles of gothic clothing from deathrock to cybergoth each with different aspects that make them their own thing. The batcave/ trad goth look which was the first gothic look to form usually consisted of black shirts and t shirts, black trousers and skirts in various different materials (such as leather, latex, etc). jewellery and dark makeup. Some icons from tghis era include Robert Smith, Siouxsie Fishnet (from tops to tights), black boots Sioux and Ian Curtis (usually platformed),endless amounts of
Fast forward to now and you can still see the influences that music and fashion have on each other and more specifically how the artists influence the world of fashion all together. New and upcoming alt pop band Pale Waves have a unique and innovative style that makes them stand out from various other pop acts. All though bassist Charlie and Guitarist Hugo have fashionable indie looks, drummer Ciara and lead vocalist and guitarist Heather have dark gothic looks that are somewhat of a throwback to the 80’s scene. Their looks tend to feature very dark makeup, black shirts and bralettes, black trousers and skirts, lots of jewellery ( specifically Heathers rings) and high platforms shoes and boots - most prominently their Creepers. Their look is very much adored by their music fans and many have taken to dressing like them, which i am sure they are honoured by.
