Welcome I joined Corporate & Community Learning in the spring of 2012, following my retirement from the Alton Fire Department, where I served for 24 years and retired as chief. With safety being a big part of my career, working with CCL’s Safety Programs seemed like a natural step. As associate director, I am responsible for the creation and operation of a best–in–class contractor safety orientation facility for businesses and associations within the St. Louis area, with an emphasis on those located within the Lewis and Clark Community College district. I want to use my training and life experiences to help reinforce the passion for promoting and maintaining a safe environment. One simple choice at any given moment can, and often does, have a domino effect in either direction, good or bad, and the choice to do things in a safe manner is always the right one. That remains our focus.

Associate Director, Safety Programs
Business and Education Partnerships. Lewis and Clark Community College has the largest corporate and business workforce training program of any community college in the State of Illinois with over 13,000 total students and has been very active in working with area business and industry to serve their job training needs. The College’s alliance with major firms including Olin Winchester, Global Brass, Valero, Phillips66 and Shell Lubricants resulted in a significant site safety program for the Wood River Refineries serving almost 70,000 skilled trades contractor workers in the last eight years. Another key model for this kind of C2B (College to Business) collaboration occurred when Lewis and Clark and Phillips66 partnered to develop an associate degree program for Process Operator Technicians. In the last year Jost Chemical deployed the college to bring a customized version of this PTEC program direct to employees in their plant. In partnership with the Society for Human Resource Management, Lewis and Clark offered the SHRM Learning System to enable HR managers to prep for the rigorous examination that can lead to the PHR & SPHR certifications in their field. And in a smaller yet significant example of outreach, Lewis and Clark is serving multiple needs of healthcare at Community Hospital in Staunton with a Lean/Quality Assurance consultant currently working with them to improve quantitative reporting measures for the Illinois Department of Public Health, as well as database and other computer learning needs of the staff and hospital president. This division continues to expand year after year, and we thank all of the area businesses and program participants who have supported us.

4 Communication Styles of I–Speak
According to more than 35 years of business research by DBM in New York, people use one of four communication styles that frame how they speak and filter what they hear. When you discover what your style is from a survey in class, you can learn to listen more effectively to others and speak more clearly with everyone, no matter their own style. I–Speak© provides insights into the use of language that can help you overcome “listening filters” and craft compelling messages. I–Speak© also provides “clues to use” so you can recognize the communication styles of others, and flex your personal style to match, thus becoming more influential and persuasive.
