Online choices have always been an option, however, we have brought some topics to your attention that you may not have been aware of. You will find these in the black sidebar on each page. There are hundreds of titles to choose from, so we can only list a few in each issue. See page 5 for the links to our online learning partners if you do not see the course you are looking for. Chances are it’s there!

Be sure to check out our spring expert chat session entitled The Hidden Fleet: Safety for non–DOT Vehicles. AJ Gajdosik with Acuity Insurance will share ways to improve the safety performance of your non-DOT fleet and help save you money on your insurance programs. See page 4 to RSVP for this free session. In addition to all the professional development choices we have to offer, safety is high on our list of expertise. Go to www.lc.edu/safety for access to our safety course calendar, a quick reference to several safety standards and several new courses that will be offered on a revolving schedule – including CPR, Forklift Operator, HAZWOPER, Fall Protection Awareness, OSHA 10/30 and Confined Space Awareness. The college continues to offer the same contractor programs as the world-famous Houston Area Safety Council (HASC). As a satellite location for HASC, we run The Basic Orientation Plus® and The Basic Refresher® for ARSC reciprocity with various plants and manufacturing sites around the globe. This past year alone, we have added 15 company site specific courses to be streamed at our facility. See page 7 for the latest new sites or go to www.lc.edu/HASC_satellite to download our most current course listing.

Leadership Survival Tactics for New Supervisors
Yesterday you were one of the employees who took orders; one of the team. Now you’re in charge of the team. What do you do? How do you change from being one of the workers to supervising all of the workers? Most importantly, how do you make that change so that you gain the respect and confidence of your employees, your own manager who hired or promoted you, and also respect yourself in the process? Are you aware that the most important part of supervising others is controlling yourself? Would you like to know time–tested tactics to handle the typical situations faced by supervisors everywhere? In this half–day workshop, you will learn techniques and strategies in the Successful Supervisors Toolkit so that you don’t wreck your career (or damage other employees) just as you get started. If you feel it is sink or swim in your new role, this crash course provides a life line. At the conclusion of this session, you can immediately use what you learn so that you can mature into being the kind of boss others want to work for. CEPD–440–N1 Wed Feb 27

Trustworthiness: The One Business Competency You Can’t Survive Without
To paraphrase FDR, there is nothing worse for a leader than to look over your shoulder and find that no one is following. The research is clear – more than attributes like creativity, more than techniques like great speaking skills, and more than any kind of managerial expertise, the indispensable business competency is to be trustworthy. If it sounds like an unproven soft topic, that is wrong. There is data–driven research and also a solid business science that you can apply to increase your effectiveness as a trustworthy leader. Emotional Intelligence: Its Impact on Workplace Safety & Productivity
Road rage. Anger management. Bullying. Medical science has demonstrated why it is impossible to follow that old adage to leave one’s emotions at the workplace door. Yet, uncontrolled, negative emotions take a toll on workers and on the bottom line. On the other hand, emotional intelligence (EI) is more highly correlated with on–the–job success than IQ. Emotionally intelligent people excel in life because they recognize and leverage their own feelings as well as those of the people they interface with for more effective relationships and work behaviors. Learn to use the five competencies for emotional intelligence as well as the biomolecular science that describes EI. CEPD–417–N1 Wed May 15

Coaching & Conflict Resolution
Surveys confirm that people are working longer and harder at jobs that are more complex and have a wider range of responsibilities. At the same time, the way people work and communicate with one another is changing due to geographically dispersed locations and new technologies, creating added stress and complexity. The formerly homogenous, singlefunction, co-located group often is being replaced by dispersed, cross-functional teams with diverse areas of expertise. An unfortunate but natural by-product of these challenges is conflict. While conflict can lead to discoveries such as new ideas and innovative breakthroughs, it can, if allowed to escalate, result in damage to critical working relationships. This course teaches new and upwardly-bound managers to recognize signals that effective coaching and feedback is needed, as well as the signs of festering or increasing conflict. Identification and early intervention in these situations allows supervisors and managers to take appropriate action to minimize damage. Two key resolution tactics – effective coaching and timely mediation – are introduced and practiced in class. The primary principle of this course is the understanding that there are moments that we, as leaders, must leverage as opportunities to bring out the very best in all employees and empower them to get things done. The Expert Chat FREE! The Hidden Fleet: Safety for non-DOT Vehicles
There are many fleets out there that people don’t realize they have! Most think of large delivery trucks or 18-wheelers when they hear the word fleet. Safety for these fleets is just as important. This session will talk about ways to improve the safety performance of your non-DOT fleet and help save you money on your insurance premiums. “As part of the SCF Marine’s responsibility to meet new Coast Guard training requirements for Part 142- Subpart M Fire Protection, we partnered with Lewis and Clark Community College. Their associate safety director came to our site at the river, rather than our engineers having to travel to the college. He came equipped with a fire pan for extinguisher activities, and had the knowledge, expertise, and enthusiasm to fully engage our towboat engineers in hands-on practice with CO2, A-B-C Dry Chemical and Engineering Room extinguishers. We ran the class several times to include all the engineers, and we

look forward to other classes with Lewis and Clark Community College in the future.” Tim Robinson, HSQE Manager SCF Marine
