Businesses can count on us as the only Midwest satellite of the Houston Area Safety Council for ARSC–reciprocal contractor badging of The Basic Orientation Plus® and its refresher. And we are the only Metro East location for SHRM programming. Also for Human Resources departments, we have a Job Assessment Service to ease the recruitment process. It can include Homeland Security and criminal background checks, identity or Social Security verifications, and initial drug screening if you need those services. Please call us at (618) 468–5715 for a free demo of this service or to schedule job candidates. If a group of friends or a firm wants to take an unlisted, please let us know. We may be able to arrange requested topics from our large library of more than 3,000 titles taught over the years. In the wake of state budget issues, we work diligently to be sound fiscal stewards, and have cut back in many ways while continuing to bring you useful and fun programs. For those of you who notice the slightly smaller size of this catalog and a reduction of color in its printing, we hope such minor physical changes that cut costs are acceptable in return for our broad range of Fall 2016 offerings.

In addition to open enrollment programming, the college also does business outreach for safety and skilled workforce training needs that many of your friends or neighbors may be involved in. For example, we were able to offer Corporate Apparatus School again for Chief Rick Haase who leads Phillips66’s Industrial Fire Brigade program. Recently our Industrial Fire Brigade instructor pool was augmented by the first female to join the ranks of those brave individuals, who not only fight fires for their communities, but also use their expertise to train about the techniques and equipment for others in the business workforce who may be involved in controlling any emergency fire at their facility.

What is Your I–Speak Style?
According to more than 35 years of business research by DBM in New York, people use one of four communication styles that frame how they speak and filter what they hear. When participants discover which style they use, in both normal mode or under stress, from a survey completed during this three–hour workshop, they can learn to listen more effectively to others and speak more clearly with everyone. I–Speak© provides insights into the use of language that also can help participants overcome listening filters and craft compelling leadership messages. I–Speak© provides clues to use so as to properly identify the communication styles of others. These communication competencies enable emerging leaders to flex their personal style to match the situational need, thus becoming more influential and persuasive while avoiding misunderstandings. Leading a Successful Nonprofit
Create a Nonprofit Development Plan
Every nonprofit of any size needs to have a development plan in order to know where they’re going and what they need to get there. A development plan will help guide you in keeping your focus on those things that will get you to your goal and the freedom to say ‘no’ to those that may not. It gives you the flexibility to know when and where you can adjust the plan as the year progresses. Participants will create a development plan utilizing the basic streams for nonprofit revenue including events, annual fund, corporate solicitation, grants, etc. The plan will then provide insight into your budget needs, your staff needs, volunteer needs, etc. The plan will be your guiding document to provide direction throughout your year. While “major gifts” are the stones to build your building, the Annual Fund is the mortar which holds it all together. Learn how to create a plan for your annual fund, how to locate potential donors and levels of giving to increase your annual fund dollars and aid in identifying those capable and willing to be a major givers to your organization. Corporate Solicitation for Nonprofits
Raising funds on an annual or project basis from your business neighbors can add to your development plan, increase donations, and engage your organization in your community. Just like the annual fund, it is important to keep corporate donors up–to–date on your organization’s activities and give them the opportunity to provide support in a way that will be meaningful to them. This workshop will help you develop a giving program that includes businesses of all sizes, determine appropriate giving levels, and plan a solid stewardship program to ensure their giving on an annual basis. Doing an event for your organization can be a good thing, but it can also take a huge amount of time and effort. If you’re in a small shop, your time and effort are particularly precious. Evaluation is key, as is leveraging the help of a volunteer team to get an event implemented in a way that provides a reasonable ROI for your organization. Participants will learn a standard of measure for evaluating an event, planning, creating a budget, a volunteer team, and tools to make the whole process manageable and result in increased donations to your organization without causing you to pull your hair out! Horseback Riding Mommy, Me and a Pony!
Saddle Up!
Mommy, Me and a Pony is not just for “mommies.” Any parent, grandparent or guardian is welcome to attend. Adult/child teams will work together as they learn how to brush their horse, put the saddle on and give commands for whoa, go and turn while riding. Riders will expand their experiences to include trot practice and rein handling. Activities include riding bareback (optional) and independent riding in the obstacle course. Riding objective is to walk and trot independently while demonstrating proper riding technique. Riding a horse improves the skills of balance, coordination, forethought, empathy and the control of one’s own emotions. Rocky Branch horses are generous, patient and sweet-natured. Riders will demonstrate their new skills for family and friends on the last day of class and be presented with a rosette ribbon. This is a 3-week class with the 4th week free or used as a make-up class. Class size is limited to 6.
Six levels to take you from whoa to go! This program takes students from beginner to accomplished equestrian. Each level is a set of building blocks combining riding skills and horse care knowledge. Students will learn how to answer questions like, how much oats do I feed a horse? What’s the difference between hay and straw? How do I clean my horse’s hooves? How to feed an apple to a horse? Riding activities include playing games on horseback, riding bareback, navigating hills and bridges and a life-size riding maze. Parents are welcome to stay and watch from the viewing deck. Riders are welcome to borrow boots and riding helmets. This is a 3-week class with the 4th week free or used as a make-up class. Class size is limited to 6.

Music Kindermusik: NEW! ABC Music & Me For ages 2 to 5
This is an award–winning, research–based language and early literacy program built around music. It is taught by Ellen Singh, a Licensed Kindermusik Educator since 2004. ABC Music & Me helps develop pre–literacy and language skills through a child’s most–loved rituals: music and story time. This curriculum supports the early childhood standards and requirements for “high quality programs” as defined by the National Institute for Early Education and aligns with pre–K national and state standards. Research shows that music improves a child’s memory, cognitive development, learning skills, and ability to express emotion. Music makes a child a better learner, teaches self–control, improves coordination, enhances creativity, and inspires a lifetime appreciation of music and movement. PLUS, you will receive state–of– the–art digital at–home materials! A $12 fee for digital materials will be collected at the first class meeting. $65 CEMU–756–03 CEMU–756–05 CEMU–756–07 CEMU–756–09 CEMU–756–04 CEMU–756–06 CEMU–756–08 CEMU–756–10
