All classes have limited enrollments and are filled on a first–come, first– served basis. Each class also has a minimum required enrollment. If this minimum is not met prior to a class starting, the class will be canceled and enrollment fees returned.

For classes that meet four or more times, you may withdraw before the start of the second session in order to receive a refund. There are no refunds for classes that meet three or fewer times once the class has begun. To withdraw, call the Enrollment Center at (618) 468–7000.

As we approach another summer, I am brimming with excitement over all of the wonderful learning opportunities we have planned for you and your children! There really is something for everyone. We have over 80 camps for kids to choose from, including returning favorites like Minecraft Designers, Junior Explorers and ZooTography, along with some brand new experiences like Digging for Dino Bones, Jr. Handyman Camp, Chocolate Creations, Wild & Crazy Portraits and Archery for Young Hunters!

For Kids Classes Only Confirmation Letters
Families will receive a confirmation letter prior to the start of class that includes: confirmation of class dates, times and location; what to bring on the first day; directions to class site; what to wear; and drop–off and pick– up locations. If you register for a class within 5 days of the start date, you may receive your class confirmation by PHONE rather than by mail.
Preparing for Class
Children should attend class dressed appropriately for the weather or to suit the program. Art and science classes may be messy! Students are encouraged to bring their own water bottles to class; water is always available for refilling. Students attending an all–day class should bring a sack lunch and drink.
Safety
Parents or guardians are responsible for transporting children to and from Lewis and Clark Community College or other class locations. They should be dropped off at check–in no more than 10 minutes before a class begins and picked up promptly at check–in no earlier than 10 minutes before a class ends. Children are not to be left unattended on campus or class locations.
Child Readiness
The College reserves the right to deny participation or dismiss students who are unable or unwilling to conform to an instructor’s rules. Parents are responsible for assessing their child’s readiness and ability to participate in a program. Should parents have any questions regarding program requirements with respect to their child’s ability to participate, parents may contact the College for Kids office at (618) 468–5750. Unless otherwise noted, all our students are required to be potty trained and independent regarding bathroom routines.

College for Kids Exploration & Adventure Arctic Adventure
Practicing Architecture
From penguins and polar bears to igloos and snow forts, an avalanche of fun is waiting to happen! Through music, art, stories and science we will learn about the animals and environment of the arctic. Hands–on activities include balloon skiing, a snow puff derby, snow art and more. You’ll also get to cool off by making your own frosty treats.
Do you look at a building and wonder, “Why did they do that?” Are you interested in pursuing a degree in architecture, but aren’t quite sure? Have you taken a high school drafting class and wondered, what’s next? This program is an exciting introduction to architecture that will answer these questions and more! Experience utilizing the same equipment and techniques that our architecture students use will help participants develop a strong understanding of the art and science of architecture. With hands–on instruction in model making, drawing, composition, presentation, as well as design techniques, students will gain a broad understanding of the life of an architecture student and a practicing architect. No prior drawing or model making skills needed; just bring an appetite for architecture! For students entering grades 9–12.

Digging for Dino Bones For ages 7 to 9
Do you like dinosaurs? Become a paleontologist for the week as you learn all about the exciting world of dinosaurs! Create a diorama of dinos and volcanoes, make your own fossils, and conduct crazy experiments to discover more about the Herbivore, Omnivore and the Carnivore. Complete the week with a chocolate chip dig! You never know what new discovery you’ll make in this class. Feel free to bring a bottle of water and a light snack to class each day. Adventures in Outer Space
What can we learn about people by looking at the outside of buildings? What tools do architects use to design great buildings? How is it that building even standing up? Come learn about the “built” environment around us with Lewis and Clark Architectural Technology instructor Erica Twomey. In this hands–on workshop you will study great buildings designed by famous architects, learn about the history of architecture, and begin to develop a greater understanding of the architecture in your neighborhoods and towns. You will also practice your design skills by learning sketching, technical drawing and model making techniques. For students entering grades 6, 7 and 8.
Blast off on a series of missions to explore our Universe! In this exciting week of camp, you will travel through our universe, investigate black holes and comets, learn to identify meteorites, search for extra–solar planets, and explore what life forms we might find in our universe. Led by the coordinators of the River Bend Astronomy Club, you will perform planet temperature experiments, investigate how eclipses form, and recreate the tests used by the Viking mission to Mars. You’ll create your own guidebook to navigate the night sky and research the location of NASA space missions on–line in the computer lab. You’ll discover how telescopes work while you safely view solar flares and sunspots during the day, and view the moon, planets and galaxies during a special Thursday evening session. Each participant will also get to build their own telescope to take home at the end of the week!

Adventures in Dirt: Can You Dig It?
Here is your chance to join the Lewis and Clark Expedition and become a full–fledged member of the Junior Explorers. Learn the history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition by training at Camp River Dubois, their first Winter Encampment. Applicants should be prepared to train as a member of the Expedition by bettering their frontier skills, learning to serve in the US Army in 1803–04, preparing their own meals, making a journal, mending their uniform, identifying various native plants and animals, and many more tasks. This week–long camp will be held at the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site –– inside the interpretive center and in the historic replica of Camp River Dubois. Junior Corps Members should report to Camp River Dubois on June 15!
Get your hands dirty while discovering what lies beneath the surface of the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary! Paddle your way to mock archaeological sites to excavate and collect artifacts, analyze what we uncover and unlock the secrets of the past. Work alongside experienced archaeologists during daily digs to better understand everyday ancient life along the rivers. Encounter the amazing interactions among people, animals and the natural surroundings, but be careful not to step in the paleo poop!

Kitchen Chemistry For ages 8 to 12
Did you know a kitchen can double as a science lab? In this hands–on camp, budding scientists will build molecules, grow crystals, investigate bubbleology, and explore chemical reactions using ingredients and tools found in most kitchens. Using household items, we will learn more about the natural laws of science. Kids will need their safety glasses as they test for acids and bases and prepare gooey, bouncy polymers. Campers will use scientific tools to measure and analyze data just like a real scientist, and record their results in their own Laboratory Journal.
Do you love animals? Come and spend the week learning all about companion animals such as dogs, cats, fish and reptiles. Through a variety of hands–on activities with live animals, kids will develop the skills needed to be a responsible pet owner. Learn proper care and management, history, behaviors, diseases and nutrition of these popular pets. Discovering the right pet for you and your family is just around the corner! Hey kids, do you love hearing a good story? From fairy tales to classic children’s stories, we’ll explore the world of literature in a fun way! Through a variety of hands– on activities, children will develop self– confidence, enhance cognitive thinking skills, improve problem solving abilities and increase understanding of language and vocabulary concepts. We will learn the skills of creative writing and practice several methods of illustrating as we make our own books. Even our snacks will have a literary twist! So, bring your imaginations and let’s get this story started!
Calling all young authors! Take a pinch of this and a pinch of that, add in lots of excitement and you’ve got the ingredients for a fun writing class. We will explore a variety of literary genres as we prepare to create our very own class book. Students will participate in every step of the process from writing and illustrating to editing and binding. Each young author will receive a copy of the class book at the end of the week to show off to family and friends.

This brand new reading camp is a great way to keep kids engaged during the summer and prepares them to start the new school year off with confidence! Designed for children entering grades 1–6 next year, this program is aimed at improving phonics and word recognition, spelling, writing, comprehension and critical thinking. Each student will progress through the program at his or her own speed, based on assessment results, alongside experienced and engaging reading specialists. Want to learn to dance? Join us for an introductory class in Ballet and Tap designed especially for preschoolers! Boys and girls will be introduced to creative movement, ballet, tap, tumbling and modern dance skills. Wear your leotards and tights and bring ballet and tap shoes if you have them. If not, wear loose comfortable clothing and tennis shoes. Instructor Sara Miller has taught ballet professionally for over 15 years.
This dance camp combines the leaps, turns and rhythms of jazz with the performance techniques of poms. Young dancers will learn coordination, expression and teambuilding through exercises and fun dance routines. It is recommended that students have at least one year of dance experience before enrolling in this camp. Instructor Sara Miller has taught jazz professionally for over 15 years.

In this hands–on class, we will be creating a variety of Pinterest–inspired kids crafts! Each day we will produce a new creation, allowing students to explore and use their imaginations. Kids will learn to make photo frames, paper arts like comic books and journal making, origami and much more!
Back by popular demand! Explore the special skills needed when photographing animals in various situations indoors and out. Master Craftsman Photographer Mike Nichols will teach various skills such as: exposure adjustment, when to use flash, overcoming artificial barriers such as glass and wire, and try some close up work. Van transportation will be provided for a field trip to the St. Louis Zoo on Tuesday. Kids should bring a sack lunch for the field trip, and parents are more than welcome to attend, but will need to provide their own transportation. Students will have a souvenir, framed photograph to take home of their favorite shot of the week. Students must bring their own camera (with extra batteries and an empty memory card).

Swimmers will learn stroke techniques for all four competitive strokes –– freestyle (front crawl), backstroke (back crawl), breast stroke and butterfly. Swimmers will also learn about starts and turns, how to circle swim within lane lines, dive off starting blocks, and use a pace clock. Recreation On Target! Beginning Archery
Sports Fit Boot Camp
Learn how to deal with bullies and predators. Kids will learn what behaviors to watch for and practice how to escape to safety. They will also learn important strategies to help avoid violent situations, plus tactics and techniques for handling violence when it is unavoidable. This class is for students with any level of knowledge or skill, beginner to advanced. Students will acquire in–depth knowledge of self–protection while increasing overall fitness through practical drills. Participants will receive an informational packet with descriptions of the techniques covered in class plus at–home tips for parents. On the final day, the students will do a final review plus participate in an “escape and evasion” course and a confidence boosting board breaking session.”
Whether you are already involved in athletics or have no experience with athletics at all, this class will provide fun and challenging activities to educate, motivate and inspire! Emphasis will be on fun and fitness, not competition. Warm up, games, drills, obstacle course, relay races, and more! Wear comfortable clothing and gym shoes. A nutrition lesson and a healthy snack will be included each day.

Tae Kwon Do builds self–confidence, strength, flexibility, memory and coordination. Deep Water Running
Have fun exercising in this low–impact form of running in the deep water while wearing a floatation belt. This class simulates land running and provides cross training. Art & Photography Plein Air Painting
Plein air painting began when the Impressionist artists worked outdoors and saw how sunlight affected their colors. In this class, participants will explore watercolor techniques and experience painting outdoor scenes along the banks of the Mississippi River, the parks above the river, historic homes and the scenery surrounding the area. The instructor, award–winning artist Eugene Ursprung, will help participants answer key questions all artists encounter about subject matter, color combinations, sketching, inspiration and composition. Materials and supplies are not included in the course fee. The cost will be at least $50, depending on where you purchase your art materials and what you already own. In this course you’ll gain insight on the elaborate process that professional photographers go through, both in the technical and artistic sense. Guided by Master Photographer Mike Nichols, you’ll explore three elements of great photography, good light, good composition and good exposure. Discussion topics will include taking action shots, chronicling family life, shooting in various weather conditions, harnessing the light at dawn, dusk and everything in between.

This course studies sanitation in relation to food preparation and service. Training topics include sanitation chemicals, equipment, materials, regulations, and inspection standards necessary to ensure sanitary dispensing of food. This American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course is intended for healthcare professionals, or students enrolled in a health–related career program. CPR includes adult, child and infant one– and two–rescuer CPR; rescue breathing for the adult, child and infant using a bag–valve–mask device; use of an AED; and management of a conscious and unconscious adult, child and infant who is choking. Participants must complete a skills practicum and earn a score of 84% or better on a written exam to successfully complete the course and to receive an American Heart Association Healthcare Provider completion card (valid for 2 years). The Medicar and Service Car Training program is designed to target primary instructional areas of non–emergency transport requirements. Public Act 095–0501 amends the Illinois Public Aid Code requiring all such providers must certify that the driver and employee attendant have completed a safety program approved by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (DHCS). This course will focus on a review of the standards established by the National Safety Council and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Emphasis is placed on individual flagger requirements regarding at–risk worker training and responsibilities. Topics of discussion include, but are not limited to, advance warning areas, transition areas, activity areas and termination areas of work zones. On–site outdoor training examples are used to illustrate the proper selection set up and use of temporary traffic control devices. This 4–hour course is designed to satisfy Federal, State and Local flagger certification requirements.
