BULL SELECTION ASSISTANCE

Purchasing bulls is very important for the direction and production of your cow herd. It is a never-ending search for bull power to improve traits. Being hands on in our breeding program and knowing your cow herd, we would be pleased to assist you in identifying bulls suited for you. We have developed a wide genetic base in our bulls from power bulls to heifer pen orientated, calving ease bulls throughout every segment.

Welcome to our annual sale. We are coming up on 40 years of Bull sales held on farm. We think back on the people and the cattle that have helped progress Lewis Farms to get where we are today. The customers make this whole thing fun, rewarding and motivating. Everyone here whether it’s the seed potato or the seedstock industry, we are motivated by our customers and by our families to uphold the best product and customer service within reach. We believe we have a vast set of bulls for sale from large sire offerings that are elite. We continue and encourage to offer our own bull warranty; this is popular within our customer base.

New to the herd! Kyle and Alexis welcomed Haizley Joan on March 21st. As well Brock and Jamie Fetting welcomed Parker Elle on March 5th. The young but active fifth generation grow like weeds everyday. Our help and staff are like family as well. Of course, none of our goals and day to day get done without great help and knowledge.

The bull offering has been selling from coast to coast and more into the US all the time. But most stay in the central part of Alberta. These bulls are fed lean and built to last, that is the goal. Were on a high forage ration composed of hay, haylage, corn silage, wheat distillers, and a Bullseye supplement. The bulls are managed in big pens. Our culling process is constant, we work with these bulls on foot. While both calving rotations saw about 60% bull offspring, we feel this also plays into ours and our customers advantage, our bottom 1/3 has never been stronger.

We feel the importance of investing into our cowherd, whether its new bulls, genetics, genetic testing, carcass test, or any test you see in this catalogue. The goal in any livestock operation including a purebred one is profitability. We know if our customers are profitable, we will be to. We are looking forward to this event. We enjoy touring people through the bulls and cowherd. We strongly suggest people to get out and see the bulls. VOLUME DISCOUNTS

A minimum of 2 bulls purchased can trigger the volume discount. The Discount will start at 2% beginning at $15,000 and will increase by 1% every $10,000, up to a maximum of 10% on the entire purchase. The discount will only apply to bulls that are paid for in full on Sale Day. Absentee buyers will have 30day extension for their discounts. Partner bulls do not apply.

FREE DELIVERY & AFTER SALE OPTIONS

Option A: Free delivery will be provided by Lewis Farms to central points in Western Canada at the convenience of Lewis Farms, Eastern Canada will be cost shared.

Option B: Lewis Farms will keep bulls until May 1, 2022 for no charge. Then by that time the bulls will be picked up unless previous arrangements have been made. Lewis Farms insists all bulls be insured or covered with the Lewis warranty while at Lewis Farms.

Option C: Purchasers wishing to pick up their animals on sale day will receive at $100 discount per bull purchased.

POLLED TESTING

A majority of the red and black Simmental bulls are homozygous polled tested. If it simply says Polled, it is because the bull was not tested. Our herd is over 95% homozygous polled. If we had a heterozygous test, it is illustrated. Homozygous polled represents that the progeny can not have horns irregardless of the dam.

COLOR TESTING

A number of black bulls have been color tested for color expression if not knowing by parentage. A homozygous black bull will not sire a red calf. A heterozygous black bull could sire a red calf. Full blood bulls marked DLF (duluter free) have been tested.

US EXPORT

With regards to exporting bulls out of the country or for testing for admission to stud, Lewis Farms will arrange for all the tests, but the cost will be borne by the producer.

HEALTH CARE

All bulls to be sold are vaccinated and boostered against; IBR, PI3, BVD (type 1 & 2), BRSV, Histophilus, Mannhaemia, Pasteurella, 8-Way Blackleg. Vaccines given are Vista Once and Vision 8 Somnus. Treatment in the summer (Safeguard) for internal parisites and Saber for fly control. Treatment in the fall with Ivermectin for internal and external parasites.

This comprehension health program allows our bulls to be as healthy as possible and protected against all the common communicable diseases or the core vaccines used in the industry.

Footrot vaccine is given; initial shot January and boostered at semen evaluation time (February). This is indicated on the semen evalution form as footrot vaccine. Please have a close look at the semen evaluation form and any questions don’t hesitate to ask me.

BREEDING SOUNDNESS EVALUATION

We look for 3 factors: Spermatozoal motility, morphology and scrotal circumference as well as doing a physical examination and watching the bulls walk. During collection of semen we closely check the penis and inspect for signs of abnormalities.

All bulls are sold who exceed one year of age will have been classifies as satisfactory in all categories and give us all indications they will go out for you and become good breeding herd bulls. All scrotal measurements will be posted on the supplement sheets.

Deferred on semen bulls will be announced sale day. The only components which are not tested are the libido and the bulls ability to breed. This component is up to you, the purchaser. It is absolutely essential to watch your bull on his first few services to make sure successful breeding is occurring. Any problems or concerns with your purchase(s), please direct back to Lewis Farms and we will check into them for you.

2022 SALE RESULTS AFFORDABLE BULLS

Lewis Farms guarantees to sell you a bull that is structurally sound, a bull that has passed semen test done by a licensed veterinarian.

Should any Lewis bull fail to be satisfactory breeder, unable to physically service a cow or heifer, he will be replaced with a bull of equal value. Should this not be possible, an adjustment will be made to reflect the value of the bull in question or a credit will be given towards the purchase of another bull. We guarantee to provide you with a sound breeding bull. We, however, will not provide replacement or adjustment for physically injured or mismanagement. Bear in mind, we stress the importance of Lewis Farms Breeding Season Warranty or a third party insurance provider.

Our warranty program offers a warranty in a language you can understand. While under our warranty your bull is covered for injury, sickness or death. We will service you needs with another bull or a credit to next years sale. Should you have any problem with a bull, contact Lewis Farms directly at 780.962.5050 or through Kyle or Ken’s cell phones. We require your veterinarian to complete a report and fax or email it to Lewis Farms. We will work with you to make sure your cows get serviced and your are satisfied with your purchase.

Lewis Farms Breeding Season Warranty has been developed to protect your purchase during the most critical, high risk time of a bull’s life, the breeding season.

We offer the following options which are the buyers responsibility to purchase at time of settlement:

Notify Lewis Farms immediately by phone 780.962.5050. Employ a licensed veterinarian to treat, diagnose and/or fill out a vet form. If the animal dies, a post mortem may be required.

Coverage – During Breeding Season - In case of loss, Lewis Farms will not be responsible for anything up and above the purchase of the bull.

OPTION 1 & 2 - Covers 100% of the purchase price less salvage value when possible

OPTION 3 - Extended season, covers the animal during and after breeding season. We will cover 80% if the original value, less salvage when possible.

Lewis Farms is responsible to make settlement of an approved warranty claim with a suitable replacement.

Exclusions to Warranty - Injury or death due to malicious, willful or intentional acts or mistreatment by you or your employees are fraudulent claims.

BRAD ANNETT

NOV. 22, 1969 - APR. 23, 2022

Brad and Jennifer moved out west from Dresden, Ontario in 2007. We got together in 2008. Brad was with us

for a number of years in his first stint here at the farm. Brad and Jen lived southwest of Stony Plain at the time. Jen was an Ag event manager at Northlands. Brad later helped Hamilton’s at Cochrane for a period. Brad and Jen bought a place west of Rich Valley and focused on their Dawn Valley Limousine herd. Brad came back and gave us a hand mainly at Sangudo, always remaining flexible wherever he was needed. A top notch operator on any kind of equipment and a great fixer on anything thrown at him. Big time talent in all areas of the farm with his top interest in the cattle. Whether that was feeding, bedding, treating or checking the cattle, it came easy to him and he enjoyed every aspect. Brad was really good with our kids and was happy to work with them. I always enjoyed old B-Rad whether we were on a construction project, dealing with cattle or just plain visiting. A great fellow that helped us and our farm along.

We are a generational family farm based out of Flatbush, Alberta. Our farm consists of a 250-head commercial cow-calf operation as well as some grain farming. We started doing

business with the Lewis family years ago and continue to purchase bulls year after year. The power and soundness these bulls have added to the females, as well as the growth and muscle within the backgrounding pen is top of the line. A sure-footed animal with a quiet temperament is what we strive for and these LFE bulls never fail to impress us by delivering these traits. The cattle and customer service the Lewis family offers is none other than the best and we look forward to continuing doing business and adding profitability to our herd for years to come.

Welcome to the 38th annual bull sale at Lewis Farms. I feel very fortunate for the continued partnership with the Lewis family and want to thank them for their support and hard work organizing and preparing for the sale.

I am very proud of my 2022 sale offering. Every year I challenge myself to make the most consistent group of bull calves. The bulls I have chosen for this sale are powerful and high preforming. They are soggy made and full of muscle. Their dark cherry red color and goggles make them showy in the sale ring.

2022 was a memorable year for us. Rhonda retired on June 30 from teaching after 30 years. She loves being retired and enjoys being home. We were busy celebrating the

marriage of our girls this year. Payton and Dustin got married July 9 and now live outside of Wainwright. Kailee and Billy celebrated their wedding September 17 and reside in Edmonton. We are blessed to have them in our family, and we enjoy family activities and building memories.

These nicknames went along with his incredible sense of humor, while being the king of one-liners. I got to know Brian in the late 80s on trade missions with ACABA to various livestock regions in Mexico and South America. Brian was a great advocate and diplomatic ambassador of all breeds of Canadian cattle. A super person to travel and be associated with. His keen eye for good ones always had him in high demand judging cattle shows and cattlemen’s request for his personal opinion. A man full of integrity with deep sincere interest in good cattle and people. Brian’s life always revolved around cattle. From the families Angus farm, to independent breeders, some sale management and completing his career with the Angus Association. Brian always made time for a visit. He had the ability to acknowledge everyone around while putting a positive spin on most situations.

We have been managing the C&G Ranch since 1991 for the Walter Gerdts family. We grew the Ranch to an operation of 1300 commercial cows and 2500 acres of crop land. With the passing of time we have now reduced the herd to 400 cows. Lewis Farms bulls represent the majority of our bull battery for the past 30 years. Simmental or Angus bulls has allowed our herd to achieve our expectations of an efficient and highly productive herd. The predictability, functionality, and longevity of the bulls never fail. In the fall the consistency and uniformity we see in our calves have been sought after for 4-H projects across central Alberta thanks to these bulls.

The cattle industry is ever changing, and Lewis Farms genetics are always keeping pace. We have a great relationship with everyone at Lewis Farms. Their dedication to the cattle industry and their customers is unsurpassed.

INDUCTED INTO THE ALBERTA AGRICULTURE

Jack Lewis was a true farmer, an innovative agricultural producer, a leader in the community, and a generous supporter of agricultural education.

A leader in the agriculture industry, Jack’s willingness to embrace innovation and new technology set a standard for excellence in an ever-changing industry. Jack took over the farm his parents established in 1932 expanding it to, at the time of his death, over 4,000 acres of grain, oilseeds, seed potatoes and 1000 head of Simmental and Angus cattle.

HALL OF FAME JACK LEWIS

Jack grew up farming with his father at Lewis Farms in the Winterburn community just west of Edmonton. He graduated from the Vermillion School of Agriculture in 1951. In 1956 he married Laverne with whom he continued to farm and raise their family. In 1957 Jack graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. Lewis Farms would later move to the Spruce Grove area and expand to include a Sangudo division as well.

The family-owned Lewis Farms was a pioneer in new farming techniques for seed potato production, which included importing specialized equipment from Europe to improve production and quality. Jack was also a founding member of the Edmonton Potato Growers Co-operative, established in 1960. Along with other visionaries, Jack understood that a co-operative model of marketing potatoes and other vegetables would increase efficiencies and profitability for members. Edmonton Potato Growers is now one of the most respected and efficient potato marketing groups in North America, with export markets including Canada, the US, Mexico, Russia, Thailand, India, and China.

An influential advocate for the Alberta Seed Potato Industry, for decades Jack was an active and proud member of the Alberta Potato Commission (APC - now Potato Growers of Alberta). In the early 1980s Jack sat as a Director and Chairman. Across the province, he worked to unite the Southern and Northern potato growers, as well as the seed, table, and process potato growers. Jack, along with the APC Board, helped to lobby government on many potato related issues at the local, national, and international levels.

Jack also helped establish Lewis Farms as a Canadian leader in the breeding and production of Simmental cattle. With his children, and now grandchildren, they grew the Simmental herd to a successful purebred operation, selling an average of 300 purebred bulls per year at their world-class annual on-farm production sale. In 2011, Lewis Farms was inducted into the Canadian Simmental Association Hall of Fame for their contributions to the industry. The 2023 bull sale will be the 38th annual bull sale drawing local, national and international buyers seeking the high-quality genetics the Lewis’ are known for.

In addition to being an advocate for the Alberta Seed Potato Industry and establishing Lewis Farms as a leader in the breeding and production of Simmental cattle, Jack saw the importance of supporting, the advancement of agricultural education. He established scholarships for agriculture students at Lakeland College and the University of Alberta, mentored several international students through the International Agricultural Exchange Association, and with the help of Laverne, helped furnish Alumni House at Lakeland campus.

Jack also volunteered on the Lakeland College leadership team for their capital fundraising campaign. Lakeland College named its data lab the Lewis Farms Data Lab in honour of Jack and the Lewis family. Jack was the first person ever inducted into the Lakeland College’s Alumni Wall of Distinction and received the Alumni Honour Award from the University of Alberta.

Jack was generous with his time and had a fundamental belief of always giving back to his community, whether he was hauling 4-H steers to local achievement day, or volunteering at many Rotary events. He was also very supportive of his Indigenous neighbors on the Enoch Cree Nation in their endeavours to diversify economic opportunities and spent many hours mentoring members of the Enoch Cree Nation as they learned large scale potato production.

At the age of 88, Jack would still be at Lewis Farms on a daily basis doing repairs, driving equipment or sharing his vast knowledge of agriculture. He always sported that huge smile he was well known for and was happy to chat about anything farm related. Jack’s legacy lives on through generations of devoted family that continue to love Lewis Farms, the land, and raise animals for the future of their families. He has been a supreme leader and teacher of many aspects of agriculture, and it shows in his families’ work ethic and passion for the same.
