“If you’ve never experienced the joy of accomplishing more than you can imagine, plant a garden.”
Vision Statement
Through botanical, horticultural and educational excellence, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden will reveal the unity and integration of human and plant life, celebrate the fundamental significance of the natural world, and enrich our community and beyond.
Robert Brault
If “abundance” is receiving … achieving … and sharing more than imagined, then fiscal year 2010-11 was truly a year of abundance at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. No one demonstrated more abundant love for Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden than Lora M. Robins, our long-time friend. Mrs. Robins influenced the Garden’s evolution during her lifetime—and at her passing last year. We will continue to celebrate her generous legacy for years to come! (see page 8) As a result of Mrs. Robins’ and many others’ visionary support, close to 318,000 visitors were greeted last year with an endless array of outstanding horticultural displays, educational experiences, community events, and memorable opportunities for family fun. “Orchids Galore!” launched A Million Blooms with exquisite, sometimes rare orchid specimens. “Glorious Glass in the Garden” showcased flameworked glass sculptures by world-renowned artist Hans Godo Fräbel. Meanwhile, enhancements to the Central Garden refined its classical design and added a new Fountain Garden with dancing water and light as an inviting prelude to the Conservatory.
Believing that abundance multiplies when shared, the Garden demonstrated our Mission by offering free admission on July Fourth, hosting at-risk school groups, and welcoming need-based and charitable organizations through our Sharing the Garden program. We deepened alliances with like-minded organizations; partnered with educators, schools, and vulnerable communities; earned designation as a Virginia Green Attraction; strengthened our volunteer corps; and donated almost 26,000 pounds to date of nutritious vegetables from our Community Kitchen Garden to hungry neighbors in need. These and other noteworthy accomplishments are detailed inside this report. In so many ways, fiscal year 2010-11 was a year of abundance … and we thank you for your meaningful support which made it all possible. Now on to a new fiscal year, where we hope you’ll once again take part—as a contributor, volunteer, member, and of course, frequent visitor. May we share the joy of reaping more accomplishments, more enrichment, and more abundance than any of us has yet imagined!

As the Garden’s offerings and attendance increase, so does our need for additional staff-support. During the past fiscal year, 511 active volunteers rose to the challenge by providing a remarkable 32,518 hours of service. Their contributions were essential, totaling the equivalent of 16 full-time staff.

The Bloemendaal Council, comprising volunteer representatives from each area of the Garden, provided continued leadership, insightful recommendations, and material organization for schoolgroup visits throughout the year. Another dedicated volunteer group, the Garden Guides, led more than 2,800 visitors on group tours, including two that presented new themes: “Our World of Trees” and “Discover Major Lewis Ginter History Tour.” Individual volunteers from across central Virginia assisted in the Garden Shop and Admissions, supported special events like Dominion GardenFest of Lights, or carried out essential garden tasks. Twice during the year, our volunteers coordinated regional Plant Sales. The 2011 Spring Plant Sale was deemed the
most successful on record. In addition to numerous external vendors’ sales, more than 3,000 plants propagated by horticulture volunteers were sold. The Henrico Master Gardener Booth also provided a new educational component. Like their adult counterparts, our community’s youth experienced the rewards of volunteerism. Early in the year, the Children’s Garden Service Learning Program provided venues for middle and high-school students to explore career opportunities, followed by the launch of the Youth Volunteer Program. The latter coupled short-term community service with summer work experience, education, and staff supervision. From harvesting vegetables in the Community Kitchen Garden to learning about compost in the Children’s Garden, our next generation practiced a variety of skills and experienced firsthand the interaction of man with nature.
“I have the privilege to help maintain a beautiful place with my own labor and say, ‘I helped do this.’” Elizabeth Kelley, Youth Volunteer
At Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, volunteers are not only dedicated workers. They are our cornerstone, our friends, and our ambassadors in the community. We sincerely thank all who generously share their time and talent.

Exhibits of National Acclaim “Glorious Glass in the Garden” debuted last year with an extraordinary exhibition of glass sculptures by Hans Godo Fräbel, the world’s most famous flamework glass artist. Throughout the Garden, visitors discovered intriguing art forms at every turn – from imaginative Longfellows and cavorting clowns to realistic reptiles, eclectic masks, and larger-than-life geometric forms. To the delight of visitors and staff, Mr. Fräbel and his artisans crafted four new artworks and a new series of fantasy flowers that were inspired by Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s beauty and history. Flamework demonstrations, seek-and-
find adventures, a group tour, children’s art activities, and signed limited-edition collector sculptures in the Garden Shop complemented this Mid-Atlantic premiere. Then in spring 2011, “Orchids Galore!” kicked off A Million Blooms in a most spectacular way. Over the course of the exhibit, more than 2,000 diverse orchids graced the Conservatory with dazzling color, intoxicating fragrance, and exotic beauty. Related exhibits provided educational enrichment, including rare orchid prints “Reichenbachia,” and “The ABCs of Orchids” on loan from the U.S. Botanic Garden.
“Lewis Ginter is just a gorgeous botanical garden and I am proud and honored to showcase my work in this beautiful setting.”

Lora M. Robins
Endowment, Special Program and Project Gifts (continued)
1912-2010
Generous philanthropist, lover of beauty, committed educator, business-minded visionary, and dedicated friend of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden
More than anyone, Lora M. Robins guided and influenced the evolution of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Since its 1984 founding, Mrs. Robins’ contributions of time and funding have been no less than magnanimous. She served on the first Board of Directors, and provided funds for countless additions and enhancements, including the Bloemendaal House furnishings; the Lora and E. Claiborne Robins Tea House; the E. Claiborne Robins Visitors Center; the Lora M. Robins Library; the very rare Descubes collection of 19th-20th century botanical drawings; and her final project, the Lotus Bridge. Mrs. Robins passed from us on August 22, 2010, at the age of 98, leaving one last legacy – a $10 million endowment to care in perpetuity for all she has helped to build over the years. Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden extends esteem and gratitude to Mrs. Lora M. Robins and her family for the gift of the Garden to all of Richmond.
Endowment, Special Program and Project Gifts The following individuals supported Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden through gifts to the Garden’s Endowment fund or with leadership gifts for special events or programs between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011. These community leaders’ support enabled the Garden to host additional educational programs for children and adults, as well as special events and projects, and helped fund Garden development and expansion.

Events Fund Garden Enhancements Amid a setting of springtime beauty and entertainment, the Board of Associates annually hosts a Cheers to Art event. More than 100 works of art are generously donated by local artists for the fund-raising auction. This popular event raised $14,000 in 2010 and more than $47,000 in 2011 for future enhancements to the Children Garden. Later in November, Splendor Under Glass enchanted more than 500 guests who ventured through an “orchid cloud forest” for an evening of fine dining and dancing. “Raise the Paddle” brought in $35,000 to support the Children’s Garden, while the gala and its auctions raised more than $145,000 to support the Garden’s educational and horticultural missions. Thanks to all who supported these special events!

As the region’s leading horticultural resource, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden sustained its commitment to education. The Garden enriched the lives of 25,676 children who visited through general admission last year, as well an estimated 4,780 students impacted by teacher workshops and 10,693 involved in one or more group programs. Whether through day camps, field trips, family adventures, or active-learning activities – our next generation grew in their understanding and appreciation of the natural world. Likewise, more than 3,000 adults participated in the
collaboration, advocacy, and action. We provided professional support, institutional guidance, and educational resources for local greening initiatives, community projects, and other ventures compatible with the Garden’s core mission, vision, and values. Garden staff and representatives were involved in discussions about significant urban greening projects, from Monroe Park to CenterStage’s neighboring property on Broad Street. We trained educators and parents on ways of using schoolyards as learning landscapes. Working alongside agencies like the “Excellent instructor—sooo much fun!” Participant in Nature Journaling Class
various workshops, lectures, professional development seminars, tours, and special symposia. Topics ranged from gardening and propagation to floral design and photography—ensuring educational offerings for most every age and interest. The Lora M. Robins Library garnered increased awareness as the Botanical Book Club entered a second year, and as visitors enjoyed the additions of Wi-Fi access and an online book catalog.
Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, we encouraged development of school and community gardens. And with corporate partners and Virginia Commonwealth University’s Rice Center, we helped bring attention to regional issues of watershed protection and careful management of precious, limited water resources. True to our mission, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden enlightened and inspired our visitors, members, colleagues, and community.
Reaching “beyond our walls,” the Garden also was recognized as a center for Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden | Honor Roll of Donors 2010–2011

Last fiscal year, our marketing endeavors attracted close to 318,000 visitors to the Garden, where they were engaged and enlightened in countless ways. Multiple and ever-expanding channels of communication extended our reach – locally, nationally, and even globally – including an enhanced website and an extensive social-media network. The latter won international acclaim with the 2010 Shorty Award for innovative use of Twitter (tied with the Poetry Society of America and the Reduced Shakespeare Company). Through public relations we shared stories about the relevance of the Garden and the natural world to everyday life. An impressive
array of national media coverage published in “Southern Living,” “Woman’s Day,” “Birds & Blooms,” “AAA Mid-Atlantic,” and Reuters.com. Strategic partnerships rounded out our community relations. Dominion, our GardenFest Title Sponsor, collaborated with the Garden to produce videos about energy savings through landscape design and LED usage for holiday lighting. Meaningful alliances also strengthened with the Richmond SPCA (Fidos After 5); Prevent Child Abuse Virginia (Pinwheel Garden); Virginia Opera (Flowers After 5 and Rose Fest); and FeedMore (Community Kitchen Garden).
Sharing The Garden: Our Mission in Action
In the spirit of community support, the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden provided more than 1,000 complimentary tickets and memberships for need-based groups and fundraising efforts hosted by churches, volunteer fire departments, foundations, and nonprofit groups in the Richmond metro area and across the state. Some examples include Special Olympics, Ronald McDonald House, Children’s Hospital, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
We hosted free visits for need-based groups during GardenFest, such as Children’s Hospital, Fairfield Court Unit Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond, and ASK (Association for the Support of Children with Cancer). Additional groups who enjoyed free admission other times of the year through our support of Blackwell Elementary School, Prince William County Community Service Horticulture Therapy Program, The Hermitage home for senior adults, Richmond Redevelopment Housing Authority’s public-housing communities, and many more. Each year we also donate approximately $100,000 of free or discounted meeting space to non profits and educational groups.
Shared resources, strategic partnerships, and an enduring vision connect Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden with our community. 18

“I recently visited the spectacular Lewis Ginter Gardens and was thrilled to see the accessible children’s tree house. As the mother of two daughters who use wheelchairs, the friend to stroller-pushers, and the daughter-in-law of a walker-user, I am most appreciative of the structure as well as the inherent philosophy that clearly says “come one, come all!” I look forward to returning and bringing others to enjoy your lovely, welcoming oasis.”
