In the movie Field of Dreams, Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella, urged on by whisperings, plows under part of his corn crop to build a baseball field. Pressed by debt and ridiculed by neighbors, his reward is the initially tentative and ultimately tumultuous arrival of long-dead baseball stars who come to practice and play. In time these tangible and joyful ghosts are joined by a writer seeking purpose, a minor leaguer who just wants a chance to bat in the majors, and Ray Kinsella’s father, youthful and exuberant, only too glad to have a catch with his son. There is a speech in the movie given by the wonderful actor James Earle Jones, recounting the power of baseball’s nostalgic appeal, “…ohh, people will come, Ray, people will most definitely come.” If you have not seen the movie, I would urge you to do so, but despite the assertion that “the one constant through all the years” is baseball, it is the physical space that is the visual star of the movie.

The last of this year’s harvests are coming in now, so take a moment to look around you. Consider your yard, a neighborhood park, a brown field just down the road.

Very little baseball is actually shown (the game of catch at the end is the most compelling), but the act of plowing under the crop and building the field comprise the film’s great action sequence. The best outfield “walls” in the game are tall stalks of tasseled corn waving in the Iowa breeze, hiding deep mysteries. The loving shots of the field under lights are like beacons in the night. The place that is made with purpose is the place with the power to hold – our affection, our memories, and our hopes. The last of this year’s harvests are coming in now, so take a moment to look around you. Consider your yard, a neighborhood park, a brown field just down the road. Can you help make a place with purpose this coming year? I encourage you to dream with hope and confidence. People will most definitely come.

Our Vision Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, including the new Lewis Ginter Nature Reserve, reveals the unity and integration of human and plant life, celebrates the fundamental significance of the natural world, and enriches communities through horticultural and educational excellence and innovative outreach initiatives.
