Autumn 2019 www.lewisham.gov.uk

Welcome

We are all proud to call Lewisham home. The diversity of cultures we are so lucky to have in Lewisham is one of our greatest strengths. That’s why we’re bidding to be London Borough of Culture. I am really proud that Lewisham is home to so many creative institutions like Trinity Laban, the Albany and IRIE! Dance. We also have one of London’s first Creative Enterprise Zones in New Cross and Deptford, which is helping local creative businesses to grow. And we have so many local talented artists, with our very own Sam Wilkinson from Forest Hill School winning The Voice Kids on ITV1. Culture has a huge impact on our lives, whether that is giving our young people the skills they need for the future or helping our older residents stay active. Read on for more about our bid, and show you support at iamlewisham.uk or by sharing what you love about Lewisham on social media with the hashtag #IAmLewisham. Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham

Get ready for Age Against the Machine: Festival of Creative Ageing, a unique festival running across the borough from 13 September to 6 October. It is open to all and consists of nearly 70 events ranging from live music, theatre, dance, film and exhibitions, to discussions, pop-up choirs and outdoor performances. Stay in a fictional care home for 48 hours, enjoy an evening with 68-year-old drag legend Lavinia Co-op, or go to a tea dance that’s made it kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Most are free or ‘pay what makes you happy’. Book at www.ageagainstthemachine.org.uk.

Bangs for your buck

An outstanding achievement All six schools for children with special educational needs and disabilities in Lewisham are now rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ after New Woodlands School was rated ‘good’ in its latest Ofsted inspection in May. This is a significant improvement from May 2017, www.lewisham.gov.uk

when it was ’requires improvement’. Councillor Chris Barnham, Cabinet Member for School Performance and Children’s Services, said, ‘The quality of education in Lewisham’s special schools is a source of real pride and we are delighted for the head teacher Carlie Warner and the team at New Woodlands.’

This year’s Blackheath Fireworks is under threat due to government funding cuts. The organisers need your support to ensure it continues to light up the skies of south east London. They are looking for £20,000 to help the event take place on Saturday 2 November. And your good deed won’t go unrewarded. You can get your hands on official Blackheath Fireworks merchandise by making a donation. Go to www.lewisham.gov.uk/ fireworks for more details.

A reel good scene Lewisham’s cinema scene is booming with two unique local cinemas, one more in the pipeline and an exciting film festival taking place this September. Catford Mews, a brand new cultural venue, is set to open in summer 2019, featuring a threescreen cinema, live music venue and flexible community spaces – follow @CatfordMews on Twitter and Instagram. Collective Cinema, a popup cinema in a church in Lee, guarantees a screening with a difference. Opened at the start of this year, they turn each screening into a fully-fledged event with dancing or live music and local food and drinks, as well as using their profits to donate tickets to charitable causes, volunteer groups and Lewisham Hospital – go to www.collectivecinema.co.uk. The Fellowship and Star is gracing us with fabulous films at the Bellingham Film Palace, an 84-seat cinema showing first run, independent, art house and family films, as well as putting on live

Showcasing the talent of over 1,200 young musicians from the borough, including a range of instrumental and vocal groups from schools and music centres, the Summer Gala is an annual celebration of the vibrancy of musicmaking in Lewisham. There were performances from Lewisham Open Orchestra, an ensemble for young people with special educational needs and

Signed prints are available to buy in sizes A1 to A4 – find out more at www.heavenstobetsy.co.uk. Nancy has kindly agreed to give away a framed A3 print to one lucky Lewisham Life reader. Tenant prosecuted for illegal subletting Following a six-day Crown Court trial, a Lewisham resident was found guilty of five offences under the Fraud Act relating to subletting his council house for over seven years, as well as making a fraudulent application to buy the property, which would have resulted in him getting a discount of over £100,000. An appeal is outstanding and so no further information may be

provided at this time. Illegal subletting is a serious problem that impacts the Council and our residents. By discovering and convicting subletters, we can recover the tenancies and give them to people in genuine need of social housing. Our Anti-Fraud and Corruption Team collect information from a wide variety of sources, which we use to investigate criminal, civil and

disciplinary offences. Personal information collected from residents can help us prevent fraud and money laundering, and verify people’s identity. To find out more about the information we collect, visit www.lewisham.gov. uk/antifraudprivacynotice. If you have any suspicions of fraud, you can report them by emailing reportfraud@lewisham. gov.uk.

Walk the talk Looking for new ways to explore your local area? A local theatre group, Teatro Vivo, has released a free audio tour of Deptford based on one of their recent productions. Evelyn’s Roots is a look back at 400 years of history along the Deptford promenade. Starting by the mulberry tree in Sayes Court Park and taking approximately 90 minutes, the walk leads you up to the Thames and then back down to Deptford Park with nine stops – one for each chapter of the play. I would encourage everyone to run.’ If you think you have what it takes, and you’ll be aged between 13 and 17 on Wednesday 16 October, you need to collect 50 signatures from other young people, get permission from your parents and teacher, and submit an application by Friday 13 September. The Lewisham Alumni, an initiative introduced by Laurelle Henry, a former Young Mayor of Lewisham, connects young people who live in the borough with young adults who have reached a level of personal success after leaving school. It aims to support young people in Lewisham make further education choices and get the training and life skills they need to step out into the world of work.

to help young people in our community find their own path to success. Having grown up and lived all my life in Lewisham, I know first-hand what help I needed when I was young. Having found my own success, I want to be part of giving that help to the youth of today. Young people are the future and it’s important that people like me who came before can offer advice and guidance.’

ur borough has a proud history of supporting refugees and migrants. We believe one of our greatest strengths is our diversity and being a safe and welcoming place to live. The Council is working towards making Lewisham a Borough of Sanctuary, welcoming those fleeing violence and persecution in their countries. It recently helped set up the Lewisham Migration Forum, a network of local public services, businesses and charities working to enact the principles of the Cities of Sanctuary movement in our borough. The Council has a policy of resettling vulnerable refugee families from Syria and other areas of conflict and plan to welcome 100 more families by 2022. They are also committed to providing care to unaccompanied child asylum seekers and have signed up to accept 100 children over the next 10 years. Find out more and pledge your support at www.lewisham. gov.uk/refugees. 18

Maher Kakish Maher left Syria and travelled to Lebanon with his young family to register as refugees with the UN. He arrived in the UK with his wife and three children in December 2017 and was greeted by council and charity officials, who welcomed them, explained the services they could provide and showed them to their new home in Lewisham, where they have lived ever since. ‘I love Lewisham, I feel welcome and safe. Since I’ve been here I have explored all over London and Lewisham is my favourite place. ‘The home we’re renting is great, and the children are happy there. Two of my children are in a local school. My daughter, who is nine, loves maths and my son, who is now seven, likes reading. My baby son who is two still stays at home with my wife. ‘I receive support with my studies and couldn’t ask for more. Lewisham really does feel like my home now.’

Samer (father) Alaa ( Samer fled from Syria to Jordan with his wife, two daughters and two sons. His third daughter had already left Syria with her husband to live in Saudi Arabia. They waited there for three and a half years before coming to Lewisham in November 2017. ‘The Jordanian government staff were really lovely’ says Samer ‘and so were the police, but the huge scale of the refugee crisis had totally overwhelmed

I love it here, I really feel this is my home now Rana

Rana, her husband and two young children fled Syria after their village was attacked with chemical weapons in 2013. Fearing for their future and that of their children, they escaped to Lebanon, where they waited four years before being offered a safe place to live in Lewisham. ‘We Googled it and saw how close we were to the centre of London. We were so happy. Our home is near the mosque, the shopping centre and hospital, it’s easy to get where we need to be. ‘Both my children are at school and love the different activities and the support they get from the teachers and other pupils. Both speak excellent English, with British accents! They’ve picked it up so quickly and it’s

great because they help me with telephone calls, at the doctors and even out shopping. ‘We have recieved great support from the council. They are nice people who help us, and let us know that they are our people in Britain. ‘My uncle lives in Tunbridge Wells, and being here has given us the opportunity to visit him as well as take the children to the beach and have a normal life again. ‘I love it here, I really feel this is my home now, and so do my husband and children. My husband’s work is here, my children are happy and safe. We asked them if they missed home, but they shook their heads and said they wanted to live here, it’s where they belong.’

We were all so happy when we were told we were coming to the UK and heard about Lewisham and the welcome we could expect. ‘One of the biggest things we noticed is that there is no discrimination. if we have any problems with the power.’ Alaa is 17 and studying for her A Levels but her ambitions are higher still. ‘When I finish college I want to study law at university so I can help others. My teachers and class mates are really supportive, and in my spare time I love listening to music and reading. ‘I am worried about my brother who is still in Syria, and we are

trying to find out how he can be reunited with us. I haven’t seen him in five years.’ And what does the future hold for Samer? ‘In Syria I ran a dairy factory, producing cheese, milk and other products, but here it is not so easy. I want to set up my own business doing what I know best and that can take time, but we’re working through it with help from the Council and other support.’

Catford regeneration

Reflections on Catford is in the early stages of a big regeneration project that will see the town centre transformed over the next 10–15 years, redeveloping shopping areas and creating pedestrianised and community spaces. We meet some local residents and businesses to hear their memories of Catford, learn what’s happening now and what they think about the proposals.

Preston Benson, Really Local Group Before closing in 2011, Catford Mews was home to 30 independent businesses. Eight years later, it’s reopening as a three-screen cinema, live music venue, food court and community space, thanks to Really Local Group. ‘I worked as an accountant with property and hospitality, so I got to know how things were done. Developers would come in and sign up the biggest chain paying the highest rent. They didn’t care about what the community wanted.

‘So, I left and got into property development. I thought, what if we did development a bit differently? Why don’t we start with what the community wants? ‘Each venue will be totally unique to the area and its demographic. We’ve done surveys and people want to see more black interest films, there’s also an Irish population who want films about their history. The first year is really going to be trial and error to see what the community wants.

‘Having a stage and bringing in local artists will add something, and we want to put recording studios in for local musicians. We’re also going to have local food stalls, so the first thing you’ll see are faces you recognise, selling food you want. ‘We also want our staff to reflect the community and to be from the community.’ Follow Catford Mews on Twitter and Instagram @CatfordMews to keep up to date!

Cleo Thompson, fashion student

‘I feel like the Mews are symbolic of where I’ve grown up. I have a lot of memories of going to and from school, visiting family. These streets mean a lot to me. ‘I love the community here. It’s so diverse, generationally as well. There are many older people who have lived here for a long time and the young people I’ve grown up with. I just love the feel of it.’

Insights from local people are being used to develop a plan for the regeneration. Visit www.teamcatford.com to find out how to get involved and share your views. 20

n regeneration Ciaran O’Fathaigh, Renegade Production Ciaran was born and raised in Catford and runs a creative, multi-disciplinary practice called Renegade Production. ‘Catford is one of the least judgemental areas. In other areas, you’re judged if you’re not wearing the latest this or that. People in

Catford don’t care about that. ‘I used to work at Catford Dog Track. Lots of people have had a job there at some point. The Boxing Day races always had so much energy – like a championship football game or something. ‘I think we’ve got a chance

to do regeneration better than other areas have – to ensure it’s not done at the expense of the community. ‘More natural light, open spaces, outdoor licenses and al fresco things would be great!’ www.renegadeproduction.co.uk

Daniel Maynard, Jerk Off BBQ

Sandra Thompson, local teacher ‘There used to be a reggae and soul club called The 10 – I’m talking back in the 90s. Me and my sisters used to go there all the time. We’d go there at ten and come out in the morning! ‘The high street was really buzzing back then. There was so much to do and it felt really welcoming, like you belonged. ‘I would like to see more regeneration of the shops, and more places where people can sit down and chill and meet - places where everybody wants to go.’ www.lewisham.gov.uk

‘I’ve always been into food. My family owns a deli and we’ve always cooked. But I felt like Caribbean food wasn’t respected enough. It’s popular at Carnival then gets forgotten about. I wanted to educate people on our food. It’s about valuing our culture. ‘I did Lee Gate Market and then Catford Gin Festival, that’s how we got involved with Catford Food Market. We’re all from around here, which is part of the ethos. ‘I think Catford needs regeneration, I think it’s ready. Some people don’t like it, they call it gentrification, but as long as there are community values in place and it takes into account what people actually want, it’ll be a good thing.’ www.jerkoffbbq.com

Wendy Arnold-Dean, co-founder of Catford Arts ‘I used to have my own open house in Catford every year for 10 years, and then started Catford Arts. When I first came here, it was a bit undiscovered. It wasn’t a showy place. I liked that it was quite normal and friendly. ‘I think the regeneration is great, anything where you can do something up, make it better and bring in some life back into the place, it’s nice. I’m hoping that all the intentions come to reality.’ www.catfordarts.org Lewisham Life autumn 2019
