akeup in Second Life can be a tricky pain in the behind to grow accustomed to, especially due to the lack of layers we are able to apply onto the avatar itself. Who would have thought that in 2014 we would still only be allowed five layers?! That really limits the creativity one can put into their makeup look in the game. Even so, many creators around the grid have created beautiful pieces to allow us to personalise our avatars even further, to truly stand out, and their work should be applauded in such a game where uniqueness is not just key, but vital, to stand out.

the edge of the face, adding a depth to the face that often goes amiss on many skins. Secondly, be sure to observe the makeup packs that stores sell alongside or as an addition to their own skins. Whilst they are made with said store’s skins in mind, it is always smart to play around with layers on other base skins. I’m always partial to taking a LeLutka skin and adding layers from ItGirls, Jalwa, The Skin Shops and CheLLe to create a truly personal style. It’s all about colour matching, and if something is a little too light for your skin tone? Depending upon where on the face it is, you may be able to use it for a highlight on that particular area of the face.

With so many fashion bloggers in Second Life nowadays, and understandably so with the sheer inspiration and creativity one can draw from just walking around different stores, (there’s something so much more fulfilling about shopping written by autumn ashdene in our virtual world as opposed to doing it in real life) makeup is often ignored, so I began to explore a gray area of the blogging industry and have found a love To accentuate or give the appearance of higher cheekbones for a of mine. dramatic appearance perfect for editorial shoots or formal events, use a makeup layer under the eye area that is three shades lighter Take it upon yourself to play with these layers out there, you’ll be than your skin tone. ashion is one of life’s greatest treasures. It allows unlimited expression and is an art form in its own right. The way you dress signifies to other people instantly what type of person you are. Fashion is powerful. The spring seasons, for me, brings about an element of inspiration and a new form of creativity. Whilst many take spring as a reason to don their favourite mint green pastel shirt or their pale pink pumps, and rightly so, for me spring is much more than that. It allows us to experiment with different lengths of clothing; lengths that would not serve any practical reasoning within our cold winter months. Midi dresses are more acceptable and often utilised within the fashion industry as soon as those first few garden flowers poke their noses out of those newly-budded buds. Still classic and elegant, a far cry from the mini skirts that bombard the market in the summer seasons; midi dresses are the perfect reason to stock up on clothes for the summer during the springtime season. Fabrics change from thick, heavy wools and furs to slightly lighter cottons, denims and sheerer pieces. Shorter sleeves, higher heels; sprring brings about a new essence of experimentation that the wintry weather demands to cover up.

One of my favourite things that spring allows us to bring out of the back of our tightly-crammed virtual inventories are wide-brimmed and straw hats. Straw hats are often a perfect time to wear around the Easter period due to its correlation to the religious Christian “Fashion is one of life’s greatest treasures. holiday period and festivals. Golden hoops, leopard print capes and plaid are able to be warn without as much fear of being bombarded with a virtual landscape of sleet and snow, becoming an elephant in the room of that snowy scape that becomes so gratingly ugly after a period of time.

It’s not that I hate winter, I don’t. Each season has its own pros and cons in the fashion world, and each has it’s own sense of beauty about it. Spring, however, encompasses the best of winter with the best of summer; being not too hot and not too cool, it allows complete freedom of expression without the fear of looking completely bonkers for wearing that midi skirt whilst on an ice rink.

his year I have taken a tribal yet feminine approach to spring fashion in Second Life. My style has incorporated the use of light neutral colors such as (white, beige, brown) in clothing while using electric colors (blue, green, yellow, pink) to make contrast. It establishes a unique style that bridges the gap between casual clothing with oriental touches. Culture is essential to me, and it is the center of body decoration. Fashion is personal, what you wear symbolizes who you are. If you do not like cultural attire, try using roleplay gear, or fantasy inspired clothing. For a personal touch, accessories such as a jewelry, headpieces and feet accessories can be the highlight which transcends any fashion. As a stylist I recommend women to explore themes from different time periods and nationalities. To establish a unique style of your own this spring, details should dominate. I choose to do Native American, Indian, African, and Parisian styles. However, the world has an international spectrum of variety to offer. I encourage buying pieces from quality designers who do authentic work. Collaborating a mainstream (event and media featured) top or bottom in neutral colors with rare selections. This is the base of my style. The cultural reference or iconic detail does not have to be the entire wardrobe. A subtle tattoo, pattern or design that you choose to wear can be enough! Light to moderate exposure is appropriate! My personal style is very quaint as I love to layer. However, for those who enjoy showing off skin, I recommend alternating. To elaborate, if the top is midriff, wear pants or cover the bottom half of your body. If your bottom is short, a top with ruffles, allowing the filling of space. Utilize every part of your body and modify pieces to make them personal to you. Fashion is a balance, much like with ying-yang, symmetry should be a goal. Furthermore, being picky is a large part of the process. Not

10

only is it cost effective, but important if you’re serious about your avatar’s appearance. When picking system or mesh, whatever you prefer, buy things which can be rearranged or modified to create fresh looks. If you’re buying a piece which can only be worn in one way, be sure that you’re aware of your decision. Have an idea about the look you want before you go shopping, and try to research the market availability before engaging in compulsive spending. Having a dignified appearance this spring should not be expensive if you think carefully about your purchases. With style, it is important to feel confident. This spring, just like every spring, it’s important to wear what you enjoy. After all, style can influence not only your mood but the mood of the people around you. For this, I have found making folders of outfits I create works best. That way, you have a variety to choose. The outfits should be easy to change in different settings or occasions that you may need to attend during the season. I recommend being bold, trying something new! Shock your friends with a new style twist that can give edge. Leave your audience attracted to your unique arrangement of taste. A common misconception that people have with the work that I do is what category it falls under. I am not, and have never been, a professional blogger in Second Life, I am a stylist. I do purchase the items I recommend and I refuse to wear a style I do not support. One outfit can take me a minimum of two hours with careful planning and co-ordination. For this purpose, I do not disclose all the items I wear in my photos. However, I do disclose partial or full credits often on my Flickr page along with my blog which includes styles that my Flickr does not. I am open to giving style help and tips to anyone interested in world. Please do not hesitate to contact me via notecard @Mz Marville!

the vantelli showbook

our editor autumn ashdene catches up with her long time friend alexand vantelli to discuss with her the perfect combinations of styles and colours for decorating during the springtime seasons.

A

lexand Vantelli is one of Second Life’s most well respected and well rounded designers and interior decorators within the grid. Known for her vibrant personality and equally vibrant, regal sense of style, VISAGE caught up with her to chat to this woman about her story. VISAGE: What brought you to SL and what was it about furniture design in the game that appealed to you? VANTELLI: Genre. It’s a gay publication. Think GQ for men. It had an article about Second Life which discussed the gay scene. I was intrigued, signed up and after a period of time where I came and went, I finally fell into a rhythm of playing often. In terms of furniture design, this is something that was very true to who I am. I’ve always loved buying furniture. I had an experience where I lost a huge collection of pieces whilst cleaning out my inventory, leading to frustration followed by a steadfast decision to not buy any furniture at that time. So I began experimenting with my own, playing around with the basic system that Second Life utilised with prim work back in the day. I really grew into myself as a builder when I began working on building homes.

palette? VA: True green, baby blue, cerulean, navy with the base colour being eggshell. VI: And fabric styles? VA: Linens, thick knit linens. Brushed golds, light to medium tones of wood. VI: What item or items can you not go without using in each set you make? VA: Letters and insignias. Bookshelves and libraries. Chandeliers. Anything that falls under a French chateau-theme are pieces that can always be found in my designs. VI: What item or items are a must-have for you in each home that you design for yourself or clients? VA: I adore letters and insignias that relate to the person living in the home. A canvas with an ‘A’ for example in terms of you or I adds that personal touch to a home. VI: Do you have any in world sources of inspiration?

VI: In terms of interior design, what styles of furniture do your favour? VA: I have an eclectic taste, and changes occur frequently in whatever project I partake in. Most of the elements I employ have a classic style with a modern, contemporary twist. VI: For the spring seasons, what would you personally recommend to a homeowner looking to create an abode? Any specific colour and fabrics? VA: I always have loved a strong neutral base for homes and furniture that can be accentuated with the colours of a season, making it easier to decorate and redecorate a home due to only changing the accessories around. This also makes it more affordable for people who don’t have the money to completely change and redesign their sets each and every season. VI: What would you consider to be your spring colour 14

VA: My first inspiration to build came from The Loft, and through having been a loyal past customer, I recieved the opportunity to meet the creator, Colleen Desmoulins whom has become a very good friend and a motivating, positive role in my Second Life as a creator. VI: What would you say to any resident looking to decorate their own home? VA: As far as the realism of Second Life goes, people often think that messy means realistic. This is not the case. People think that this is interior design, but it is a misconception. That is what is referred to as stage

Harlow Heslop, the owner and proprietor of the Sunshine Mist Residential sim talks to us about the challenging task of owning a sim, and how rewarding of an experience it can be.

H

arlow sits at the bartop of her cafe, the flame red hair on her head hanging in lose, lustrous curls on either side of her heart shaped face. VISAGE: Hi, Harlow! Thank you for chatting with us today! HESLOP: My pleasure! I’m extremely excited to be here! VISAGE: When did you join SL, and what was it the intrigued you about it? HESLOP: I joined SL in 2006 on a previous avatar. I was playing The Sims and was curious if something live was available that was similar to The Sims! I googled, and Second Life popped up! I’ve been hooked ever since. I was intrigued by the idea of meeting people around the world and being able to create in a virtual environment VI: Why did you decide to open your own residential SIM on the grid? HE: I noticed there was a severe lack of quality places to live in Second Life. I wanted to grasp a corner of the market that few had, and create a high quality living environment with changing seasons. So far it’s been very successful. VI: Owning a sim must be a tough job. What would you say to anyone looking to open a residential sim of their own? HE: Make sure you have patience, and understand that it’s not something to be done if you are looking to make a lot of money. Do it only if you are wanting to improve the community and the Second Life grid as a whole. If you do it for monetary reasons you’ll be setting yourself up for disappointment. Also, again, you must be patient. People will constantly be knocking on your door for help with their plots of land.

VI: Designing a sim must also be extremely tough, right? HE: It takes a lot of work and a good bit of money, but it’s not necessarily tough. Just have to have lots of practice! VI: How about redesigning the sim each season? What’s that like? It must be fun to have full control over how the elements affects your land. HE: It’s such a refreshing feeling to recreate the sim every new season. It brings an entire different mood and feeling to the place. I enjoy it quite a bit! It also brings a whole new group of people in typically. People seem to like to live on the sim during certain seasons! VI: And what about The Bean? What was it that spurred you to open this venue, or was it the other way around, perhaps? HE: I loved the idea of meeting new people around the globe, and I wanted a friendly, laid back, quality, and welcoming environment for people to do it in. So, The Pixel Bean Coffeehouse was born! I enjoy seeing people utilize the space, and I love watching relationships form because of the venue. VI: And finally, do you have any exciting future plans that you’re looking to work towards with your SIM, or are you completely content with it as it stands? HE: I as of right now am totally content. Now that I opened this new sim, it’s added extra work, and has brought me a lot of satisfaction. I can’t see myself making any other major changes for a while!

that boy/girl thing lewis jordon, the man behind the beautiful autumn ashdene comes forward to discuss with us why he plays a male and female avatar, sharing the story behind his entry to second life and how his second life has affected his real life. by autumn ashdene

A

utumn Ashdene, the editor of VISAGE magazine has been in Second Life since 2008, when the person behind her, now 21 year old Lewis Jordon of England, was only 16 years of age. But Lewis’ Second Life story runs far before 2008, when he was around 13 years of age. Lewis had always loved playing with differing personas and types of styles, and the avatars that he used prior to Autumn’s conception (and there were many) all had variety about them. But today he juggles two characters that are, in essence, the same. They are both different genders, but are modelled on the same thing- himself. An extension of his real psyche, Autumn has, over the years, developed his sense of self in ways that upon first thought wouldn’t even be realised. First of all, playing as Autumn developed a sense of style that bled through into how he would dress in the real world. The manner in which Autumn tends to dress is rather ambiguous or androgynous anyway, and so this worked well for him. Sweaters, chinos, buttoned up shirts and a groomed appearance is something that Lewis wouldn’t have previously worn prior to his time in Second Life. A scruffy, messy teen at the time, using Second Life as a creative outlet began to change him in ways he didn’t realise. However, it wasn’t just the sense of style that brought about a change in him. In the real world around

18

2007/2008, he was often bullied for his social awkwardness and meek persona, but through Second Life a confidence was forged, seeing his creative talents in photography and graphic design flourish. Over the past three years Second Life had been placed on the back burner as he migrated to London and began studying at university. But Autumn had developed his personality so much that it has always been a place that he would eventually come back to as a place of solace. Clark Jordon was created in a flurry of panic when Lewis was faced with login issues with Autumn, unable to access her for weeks. But, more comfortable with himself and willing to share with the grid who he was as a whole,

“Autumn developed a sense of stye that bled through to the real world.”

Clark became a new outlet to explore within the Second Life world, playing as himself. He met different people, and, oddly enough seemed to resound much more with the public being himself completely; something which in no way would have been possible years back. As Autumn’s login issues were quickly fixed and he began to play Second Life with her once more, Clark didn’t get placed on the back burner as he had thought, but came alongside Autumn as an equal. Coming up to his university graduation, Lewis is looking forward to start a career in education as a teaching assistant, allowing him the financial stability to be able to put time and money into Second Life and build a media persona that he has only touched on over the past few years.

future plans

W

ith graduation fast approaching and the possibility of moving back to his hometown to gain financial stability, Lewis has been playing with ideas that can take social media within Second Life to a new step. Having started work on his personal YouTube channel which features music covers and vlogs (currently of which are monthly updates speaking about the feat of attempting to grow his hair long from a relatively short cut), an idea of implementing fashion from Second Life into YouTube videos has came about. With a keen eye for classic, elegant, almost Oxfordian outfits, his intention is to create a virtual vlog utilising YouTube, a method which is relatively unheard of within the fashion sphere of the grid. Be sure to keep up to date with Lewis and his plans for the future via his many social media outlets, listed below! follow lewis on twitter @lewisjordon instagram @lewisjordon google @lewisjordon youtube @lewisjordonmedia

M

ischief Managed is a role-playing sim in the virtual world called Second Life and was inspired by the phenomenal book series of Harry Potter by author J.K. Rowling. It is focused on years after the final battle between Harry Potter and Voldemort. While things may have changed a bit in the school, they are still the same. Classes and spells go accordingly and stay canon to the books and movies. Mischief Managed brings a community of Harry Potter fans from all over the world to create their own character’s story as they explore through and interact with other fans through role-playing. The 3-D model of the castle itself was designed by our beloved Anya Ohmai, who has professional and experienced knowledge in 3-D modeling. Before having it open in July 2012, the sim was previously known as Hogwarts: Your Story, which has been closed down due to refurbishment and improvement. On the day of the opening, it has attracted many residents of Second Life to join and roleplay. If you are looking to learn magic, get involved in events and plots, or make friends –whether it is either in-character or out-of-character– Mischief

Managed is the place for you. You don’t have to be a complete Harry Potter fan to be able to join. Some others have not had much knowledge about Harry Potter until they have joined and participated in classes. The sim also hold exciting small plots for characters like you to get involved with. In that way, you’ll develop your character and your story with others. The uniforms are mostly based and inspired from schools in the UK. With proper attire, there are specific requirements for each gender. You can dress accordingly to your liking; however, there are certain rules that are needed for your character such as skirts, trousers, when to wear casual clothes, stockings, and shoes. Once you have those dress codes noted, you’ll want to know how to shine your character’s personality through the way how you want him or her to look!

by autumn ashdene

We have a department known as the RPD which plan and plot all of the current and upcoming events that will be brought forth in the sim. While some events are not yet allowed to be revealed to the public, we have many events in planning for the future such as a belated out-of-character Easter party, something that will soon involve frogs *hint hint*, end of the year celebra20

Others mix around from other stores such as Schandefreude, FriDay, BOOM, Izzie’s, Ohmai, Standby Inc., Toki-Doki, etc. The most important you need to know is, as long as your uniform fits with the dress code rule, you’ll be fine!

we at sat down with a buttery glass of butterbeer with headmistress tiepolo to ask her some questions. hopefully we brought our rememberall so we didn’t forget to ask something!

VISAGE: What’s it like being one of the most fashonable headmistresses in the virtual world? MARINA: How lovely! I wouldn’t say I’m the most fashionable at all, though. Headmistress Hightower seemed to surpass me in that aspect. She looked adorable in everything. Though I’m more of a secret gem when it comes to fashion. I like to impliment pencil skirts, ruffles and something patterned into my outfits. My hair is red, and so naturally I try to dress to co-ordinate with that. VI: What would you say to any hopeful new students to the community? MA: I’d tell them to not use their wands on each other! Also, to enjoy the school and it’s many wonders, but please, be careful. Dark things lurk when nobody is around. Lastly? Never go to the forest, ever. It is forbidden for a reason. For your own safety. VI: What about those pesky students that like to bend the clothing rules and add a heel there or a slip or eyeliner there? MA: We’re a boarding school with many students, and so rules must be upheld. They’ll be given a cloth and told to wipe it off! If they refuse? Well. Nothing stops a professor from using their wand to wash it off by force! Though, as for heels, students will be given slippers if they don’t wear the correct shoes. And nobody wants to wear a pair of adorable, yet manacing pink fluffy slippers that scream each time you time you take a step, do they now?

VI: Do we have the time for one more question? MA: I’m sorry dear. I have some delicious Earl Grey waiting for me in the office and I positively cannot let it brew any longer! 21
