Eco-Friendly Colorhouse Paint Debuts Three New Color Collections for 2015 Marketwired
PORTLAND, Ore. — Renowned for premium paint finishes formulated without volatile organic compounds (VOCs), Colorhouse today announced three fresh, new color collections for 2015: l “Lost + Foundry imparts a modern, industrial vibe with layers of grey and green. l “Homespun Hues, are easy neutrals, as soft and simple as homespun yarn. l “Eclectic Geometric, uses a collision of unexpected colors to create a pleasantly sharp color palette. All Colorhouse collections can be found online at HomeDepot.com, Amazon.com, Soap.com and at select local retailers. “We’ve designed our 2015 color collections to appeal to a variety of color enthusiasts — from homeowners to designers alike, said Puji Sherer, Colorhouse VP Marketing/Chief Color Nerd. “Lost + Foundry — This palette relies on the colors of found objects and salvage pieces to create a grounded, gritty design aesthetic. “Taking our cue from modern industrial designers, we focused on taking this cooler, more commercial look and warming it up for residential interiors to inform this palette’s direction, Sherer said. Curated items in the home or office will pop on the rich charcoal backdrop of METAL .05, while METAL .04 and BISQUE .06 provide shifts in value on ceilings and trim. The palette can be tied together with the understated,
hardworking green of GLASS .05. “Homespun Hues — Like the colors of yarn, this palette is soft, simple and warm. These natural hues create an intentionally unsophisticated backdrop for a cozy and relaxed lifestyle. “Homespun Hues bring the warmth and comfort of easy neutrals into the home — a perfect fit with both traditional and contemporary decor, Sherer said. Weave together flea market finds with designer furniture, for the look and feel of casual luxury. Bring it back home, by incorporating a subtle Americana influence with the muted red of WOOD .05 and gentle navy of WOOL .06. “Eclectic Geometric — This mashup of sharp edges and unexpected color combinations works together to create a supremely pleasing palette. Pastel peach CREATE .01 and robin’s egg blue SPROUT .01 lose their sweetness when combined with brassy BEESWAX .04 and contemporary coral CLAY .07. “Layered together in a geometric wall pattern or spread out room by room, these colors shatter expectations surrounding traditional design, as they create a unique look: one that reflects a thoroughly individual style, Sherer said. Cast iron can be a strong choice By ed del Grande MCClatChy-tribuNe News serviCe
Q: Dear Ed, My wife and I plan to stay at home but we want to change our bathtub for a walk-in shower stall. I’m a larger man and enjoy the feeling of a very solid floor when I shower. I’m thinking about staying with cast iron and would like your thoughts about installing a cast iron shower base with tile walls. Is cast iron still a good material choice for new bathroom remodeling jobs? — Charlie, Texas A: Not only is cast iron still a good material choice for plumbing fixtures, it has also become known as a good green building material because most cast iron contains recycled materials. Another advantage with a cast iron shower base is you can have that heavyduty solid feeling shower floor without going through the traditional work of installing a custom shower pan with concrete and tile. Cast iron resists chipping, bending and cracking, and many manufacturers now include shower base sizes to fit the space of a standard bathtub. On top of all that, there are now many color and style choices as well. Remember, it is called “cast iron, so depending on the shower base size it can be a heavy/bulky material to move into the bathroom area. Bottom line: You can cast your fears into the wind if you choose cast iron for your shower base.
Turn a boring bedroom into a comfy retreat We spend about 10 hours a day on average in the bedroom. That’s a good part of the day, so why not make this retreat one of the best rooms in the house? To do the job well, it’s important to understand bedrooms aren’t just for sleeping. They serve many purposes. Televisions and Internet connections make this room well-suited for a secondary TV monitor and maybe a home office. With just a few adjustments you can turn a drab bedroom into a haven. A new furniture arrangement could give you extra space for a small desk or comfortable reading chair. Most of us think the bed has to go on the larg-
est wall in the room, but that arrangement can limit versatility. Instead, put the bed in front of the windows, leaving about a foot of space open to allow window treatments to move freely and to create a look of spaciousness. Bedside tables don’t have to match. If you’re cramped for space, use a smaller accent table on one side of the bed. If you need lighting on both sides, use a floor lamp. This could free up floor space for an attractive upholstered side chair. Bedroom chairs should be a smaller scale than upholstered chairs in your family room. If space allows, add a pair of matching chairs. The space at the foot of the bed can be used for a small writing desk, upholstered bench or armless settee. I adore using

Design the bed Start with matching sheets. Choose a style that either matches the bedding exactly or matches another design element in the room, such as the wall paint or upholstered furniture. Next, build the bedding layers. A pretty quilt, lovely throw and fluffy duvet cover make a stylish ensemble. Ditch the dust ruffle. Nothing dates a room like bed skirting. A bed without it makes the room look more spacious. If your

If you have to store items under your bed, use handsome baskets that do theirs job discreetly. Avoid clutter. A messy dresser top and untidy nightstand can completely destroy a welldecorated bedroom. A nightstand should only accommodate a clock, lamp, books and fresh flowers or a single framed photo. Anything

else is clutter. If you need more items close by, invest in a nightstand with drawers. Bedroom lamps are smaller than lights for other parts of the house. Select lamps that are less than 25 inches tall and shades that are 16 inches in diameter to keep them from overpowering the space. Artwork can transform a simple bedroom. Too many times, though, I’ve seen people hang little images. This is not the room for all your leftover trinkets and mismatched frames. Go with well-sized art, and choose it with the same care you would give your dining room or foyer. The art should match the decor and be something that you enjoy looking at every day. I often use enlarged family photos that have been properly framed. They are personal, engaging and artsy. Rethink the rugs Rugs are also essen-

tial to warm the surface under your feet as you step out of bed. Don’t think you have to buy a huge rug that covers the entire floor; it doesn’t have to extend under the bed entirely. Play with the placement. Try it at an angle or use a couple of rugs, one on top of the other, to add interest. If you plan to replace your bedroom carpet, choose a product with a shorter nap. A neutral, berber looped carpet can be a good option. If you want to have fun with some of the newer shag looks, buy it in a rug. When shag cycles out of style you can simply remove the rug. Tonight while you are in bed watching TV, take a good look around the room and ask yourself: Could it be better? Your answer can help you decide where to start making changes.

diminutive sofas in bedrooms. It’s much more comfortable to watch TV sitting up rather than lying in bed. I like to shop for upholstered bedroom furniture when furniture stores are having big closeout sales. That’s the time to pick up a good bargain. Just make sure the color, style and size are right for your space and bedroom decor. Bedding plays an important part in establishing an inviting haven. After spending years teaching my children to make their beds every morning, I’ve now discovered the most appealing beds look like they are only half made. Creating this look takes a little practice and the right pieces.

he serene view from this Moscow home is just one of its many attributes. The fact you can see out in every direction when standing in the middle of the house makes it that much more interesting. The driveway leading up to Len McCoy’s home is adorned with sculptures he and his friend created. One does not think “bachelor pad” when driving up to or entering this home situated on one of the many hills surrounding the city of Moscow, but in fact that is what it is. McCoy had the house built in 2006, but he and his parents had envisioned a home in this spot for decades. “I grew up just over the hill, and when I was a kid my favorite place to play was here,” he said. “And my parents would come up here and say, ‘Isn’t this a great view? Maybe we’ll build up here someday.’ So I did.” He feels fortunate to live here, McCoy said, and enjoys sharing his home with others. The 2,300-squarefoot stucco house sits on its modestly landscaped lot with wide open spaces for entertaining large groups. McCoy has hosted a wedding on the west lawn and hopes to do other events at his home in the future. Upon entering this modern home the first thing you realize is less is more. Few walls clutter this home and the outside walls are decorated with the natural beauty of the outside from the many large windows throughout. The dining area, kitchen and living area are all located in one grand room that, except for a fireplace, is only separated from the outside by sliding-glass doors and windows. The area flows so well that it doesn’t seem to include what, in most homes, is three different rooms. McCoy has a home office off the grand area that is a separate room. And the entryway is defined by a wall with a coat closet that makes it feel like a different room. The flooring in the main part of the house is cork, which is not a typical flooring in today’s houses, as it is known to be a soft wood. But in this house it really ties

It is made of two old-fashioned wooden doors that look as if they once separated a grand courtyard from the world. His bedroom is not as large as many of the master suites you see today but it isn’t tiny. side of the house and is just a step up from a large lawn. This outdoor space is great for entertaining large or small groups, as well as just enjoying some time alone. The deck is another area that has many functions. A hot tub is located near the sliding doors to McCoy’s bedroom, a wood bench and matching table are just outside of where the piano sits indoors, and there also is an open space to bring the piano outside and two adirondack chairs complete with footstools and a matching table. There is also a splattering of potted plants gracing the deck and still plenty of room for things like a barbecue, and more tables and chairs. McCoy did minimal landscaping, so to leave the area as natural as possible and with all the plants that just naturally grow around his house it makes sense to just incorporate a few decorative plants to the area. “I’ve kept things purposefully open,” he said. “Number one for the view, but also for fire protection. This whole area has had several major fires through the decades.” While this may be a bachelor pad it could very easily become a small family home and is also perfect for an aging McCoy with all of its wide-open spaces on one level. “When I had it built I wasn’t 20,” he said. “So I wanted it all on one level.” ——— Hayden may be contacted at phayden@lmtribune.com or (208) 8482243.

est growing connectivity technology in the segment over that period. “Bluetooth Smart has the unique advantage of being the only low-power technology that is natively supported by all leading smartphones and tablets,” said Lee Ratliff, principal analyst for lowpower wireless technologies at IHS Technology. “This ubiquity makes for a seamless user experience without requiring another device, like a hub, to translate between technologies.” In addition to native OS support from Apple, Android and Windows, the Bluetooth SIG has transformed the functionality of Bluetooth technology with the introduction of Bluetooth Smart. Bluetooth originally enabled a ’killer application’ — wireless audio — but through the Generic Attribute (GATT) profile, a cornerstone of Bluetooth Smart, developers now have unprecedented flexibility, turning Bluetooth into the ‘killer enabler’ itself, spurring several billion-dollar industries including wearables, beacons, and now, smart home. “While it seems like there is a new flavor-of-themonth technology for the smart home announced daily, we’ve been at this crossroads in other markets before and niche technologies simply cannot provide the convenience, efficiency and security of the smart home to the masses,” said Suke Jawanda, Bluetooth SIG CMO. “A look at the wearables space shows the disruptive power Bluetooth Smart brings to a market — confined by niche, proprietary wireless technologies, the fitness tracking market shipped less than 15 million products in its early years. Now, relying heavily on Bluetooth Smart for connectivity, the market is set to ship more than 150 million by 2018. You need a trusted, massively adopted technology to take an emerging industry like smart home mainstream, and Bluetooth is the standard that the most innovative developers, and their customers, will count on.” Learn more about the smart home at www. bluetooth.com/smarthomemarket.

Ornamental fall grasses adds many dementions to yards
MCT
Purpletop ornamental grass is just one of the great plants to incorporate into yards. By Kathy Van MulleKoM of Daily Press (MCT)
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Fall puts on its finery when the ornamental grasses appear — their plumes shimmering and shining in the autumn sun. Ornamental grasses are also practical in the home garden because birds and small mammals like their small seeds while deer dislike anything about them, according to Helen Hamilton, author of “Wildflowers and Grasses of Virginia’s Coastal Plain.” “Mixed with perennial flowers and shrubs, their erect stems and leaves provide a nice contrast to
the garden landscape,” she says. “Most have wide and deep roots that discourage weed seeds. Research has shown better growth of wildflowers in meadows where native grasses flourish.” As larval hosts for many species of skipper butterflies, the plants should remain uncut over the winter, until new growth appears in early spring. Many other beneficial insects lay their eggs and develop as larvae over the winter in the hollow stems of grasses and other late season vegetation.” Here are some native ornamental grasses to con-
sider for the home garden, courtesy Hamilton: Little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium). An excellent forage grass, little bluestem was once the most abundant species in the American prairie. Blue-green only when the shoots first come up in the early summer, the leaves and flowering stalks become a rich mixture of tan, brown, and wine-red through the fall and winter. The grass grows five feet tall, with wiry flowering branches intermingled with leaves. A distinguishing feature is the bent awns on the mature seed heads in clusters lining the branches. to four skipper butterflies, including the local swarthy and crossline skipper. It’s native to almost every U.S. state. Purpletop (Tridens flavus). Purpletop is noticeable late summer for its loose, open, purple flower clusters in a weeping form. The slender perennial grows 4 feet tall. The large purple seeds are widely spaced on thin panicle-branches. Birds eat the plant’s nutritious, fatty seeds and this robust grass provides significant cover for wildlife. Purpletop is the larval host for two species of grass skippers, crossline and little glassywing, and also for the broad-winged skipper and large wood nymph. It’s native to 37 states, including California, according to the National Resources Conservation Service’s plant database at http://plants.usda.gov. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum). Once one of the dominant species of the tall-grass prairie, switchgrass now grows on dunes, shores, along the edges of ponds and marshes. As larval host for the tawnyedged skipper, Delaware skipper, northern brokendash and little glassywing, it has leaves and stems that
should remain uncut over the winter. In March when new growth appears, the tan stems and leaves can be cut off in long segments, and left as mulch around the plant. Switchgrass is good for erosion control and furnishes food for small birds. It’s native to all 48 lower U.S. states, except California, Washington and Oregon. Rice cutgrass (Leersia oryzoides), giant cutgrass (Zizaniopsis miliacea). These two grasses are hosts for the caterpillars of skippers that live in coastal counties. The native coolseason grass grows and flowers late in the summer, producing seeds that are important food for waterfowl, small mammals and shorebirds. Growing 2- to 3-feet tall, the grass spreads by underground rhizomes and often forms dense colonies. Rice cutgrass is appropriately named because the sharp, abrasive leaves can cut skin and cling to clothing. Giant cutgrass is taller, growing to 12-feet tall with stout stems in shallow marshes, swamps and ditches. The flowering stems produce roots and new plants at the nodes when they touch the water. Rice cutgrass is native to all 48 lower U.S. states; giant cutgrass grows in more than a dozen southeastern U.S. states. Now let’s meet some skippers. Gardeners and their cameras are drawn to butterflies, especially eye-catching swallowtails, pearl crescents, buckeyes and monarchs “These ‘flowers of the air’ usually have large wings, colorful scales and feed on nectar for long periods, allowing easy photographing,” she said. “But there are other members of the Lepidoptera in our gardens, less conspicuous and flying faster. Moths have feathery antennae and hold their wings flat at rest; stout, fatbodied skipper butterflies have clubbed antennae, often with hooks and enormous eyes. “Within the last group, grass skippers lay their eggs on grasses and sedges, and the caterpillars roll the edges of the leaves to make a shelter, sealing the edges with silk. At rest their hind wings are flat on the surface and the front wings are held at a 45 degree angle. No other lepidopteran shows this combination of very stout body, clubbed antennae and hind and front wings in different positions. While easily identified by the ap-

pearance of the wings at rest, they do not rest long, and move very quickly, making identification and photography difficult. “These insects are just one group of many that fill niches in our gardens, in ecosystems. As they feed on leaves and process sun’s energy, their fat bodies as larvae and adults provide food to birds and their young.” Other skippers you may see in your yardinclude: Fiery skipper (Hylephila phyleus). With bright orange and black markings, fiery skippers are more easily recognizable than other grass skippers. While they feed on the nectar from the flowers of the native swamp milkweed, asters, sneezeweed and ironweed, the males wait for receptive females in short grasses such as Bermuda grass and crabgrass. Females lay their eggs under leaves of these grasses, which furnish food for the caterpillars. While feeding, they roll the leaves and tie them with silk to make shelters lying horizontally in the sod. Least skipper (Ancyloxypha numitor). Also with orange and black markings, the females favor native marsh grasses such as marsh millet and rice cutgrass as food for their caterpillars. The adults feed on plants such as pickerelweed, chicory and white clover, growing in ditches, slow streams, and marshes. Three broods hatch MayOctober. Northern broken-dash (Wallengrenia egeremet). These skippers fly slowly and are mostly dark brown in color. There is only one brood June-August; caterpillars develop in the leaves of the panic grasses and deer tongue grasses. The adults feed on nectar from flowers that are white, pink or purple such as native dogbane, New Jersey tea and sweet pepperbush. Zabulon skipper. Brownpurple butterflies with yellow markings, zabulons make two broods May-September. After caterpillars emerge from their shelters of silk-tied leaves, they feed on lovegrass, wildrye, purpletop, bentgrass, orchardgrass, bluegrass and wheatgrass. Little glassywing (Pompeius verna). Brown skippers have a transparent white spot on the fore wing. Only one brood is produced, June-August. Caterpillars feed exclusively on purpletop where they develop in their shelters of rolled or tied leaves. Adults seek nectar from white, pink and purple flowers such as dogbane, Joe-pye-weed, common milkweed and swamp milkweed. Broad-winged skipper (Poanes viator). Another yellow, black-brown grass skipper with one or two broods yearly June-August. Caterpillars feed on sedges, tall cordgrass, giant cutgrass, wild rice and marsh millet. Inland adults like nectar on swamp milkweed and blue vervain while coastal populations feed on dogbane, pickerelweed and sweetscent.

Sentimental old owners laud new owners’ redo of family home in struggling mill town

When Layne Bennett and Kevin Prall put in an offer, “I was delighted that they wanted to buy it. My daughter was upset at the closing. She was very close to my mom and dad, Ciciarelli said. “It was very emotional, and Kevin assured her they would take care of the place. I had no idea they would do such a fabulous job with it. Bennett and Prall are Florida transplants who came to Pittsburgh in 2010. Bennett, who is originally from Idaho, moved to Pittsburgh when his partner, a Colorado native, accepted an offer to work as a landscape consultant. They lived downtown for a year while looking for a home to buy. Bennett, an architectural designer and a professional home stager, said they decided that the next house they purchased had to be affordable enough to manage on one income, and it had to be close to Prall’s job in suburban Fox Chapel. Then they visited New Kensington. “The thing that drew us to the house was the porch, Bennett remarked. “We had no idea of what neighborhoods were like, said Prall. PITTSBURGH — In the Pittsburgh area, it’s common to have a house in one family for multiple generations. What isn’t common is for a family member to write a letter to the newspaper praising what the new owners have done to the family home. “The transformation of the property, in a before and after sense, is amazing, wrote Jack Ciciarelli. “This is an excellent example of what can be accomplished with a typical house on a typical street in any one of our local struggling mill towns that have seen better days, in this case, New Kensington. Ciciarelli, who now resides in Beaver Falls, Pa., described the family’s former property as neat and clean but stark. The before pictures he sent show a wellkept, nondescript yellow-brick home complete with the ubiquitous aluminum awnings. The home came into his family in 1927 when his grandfather, an Italian immigrant named Giovanni, who worked as a laborer, bought it. Unlocking the secret to hiding a spare key while not sparing security By William Hageman Of ChiCagO tribuNe (tNs)
Want to safely hide a spare house key? Here are a few tips. Burglars, don’t read this story. It’s a horrible feeling: You arrive home and discover you lost your key. If only you had a spare you could use to gain entry. Actually, there are numerous ways to hide spare key. Let’s get the obvious ones — and by obvious we mean dumb —- out of the way. Don’t leave a spare key under the doormat. Even the most dim-witted criminal will check under the mat. You’ve seen those artificial rocks. So have burglars. Forget them. Put it up over the door frame? C’mon, you can be more inventive than that. There are better solutions to the lost-key conundrum: Lockbox: You’ve seen real estate agents use them. They are small secure containers that can be opened by punching in a code. They come in various sizes and strengths. Real estate people attach them to the front-door knob. Don’t be so obvious. Hide it some-
where on the property, in a location where it can’t be seen from the street and not in close proximity to the lock. You’re telling a burglar, “Hey, Goober, there’s a key inside, and it’ll open this here door. Good disguises: If you have in-ground sprinklers, there’s a dummy sprinkler head that blends in with the others and can hold a key ($7.95). Similarly, there’s a working thermometer that has a hidden compartment where a key may be stashed ($6.95). Both are available at thehomesecuritysuper store.com. Out of sight: The website besthomesecuritycomp anys.com suggests hiding the spare key out of street view — a criminally inclined passerby could see you retrieve it and come back later to use it himself. It also suggests hiding the key around back — and make it a key to a back or side door. The neighbors: If you have a trusted neighbor, ask them to hold on to a spare key. You can reclaim it if you get locked out, or they can let themselves in should an emergency arise while you are away. Just
be sure the neighbor is dependable and doesn’t have a ne’er-do-well teenager who might take advantage of the opportunity. On the property: There are likely several hiding places just a few steps from your door. Duct tape a key to the leg of your grill, to the underside of your mailbox or inside the bird bath pedestal. Bury one under the seed in your bird feeder, or plant it under the potted impatiens on the porch. Want to get more razzly dazzly? Glue a small magnet to your key, and attach it to the inside of your home’s downspout extension.
burglar pause. Wind chimes: Several websites suggest hiding a key inside a set of wind chimes. Even if a prospective thief knew the key was there, he’d have to make a lot of noise getting it out. No criminal wants that.

Massive former bakery built in 1890 becomes couple’s dream house

The Pittsburgh home of Rick and Linda Sustakoskis includes a kitchen with a mix of cabinetry stained in warm oak and persimmon red. By Rosa ColuCCi oF Pittsburgh Post-gazette (tNs)
PITTSBURGH — Linda and Rick Sustakoski have lived all over the world. His work in the energy industry has taken them to Indonesia, Nigeria and several cities in the United States. When they were choosing their dream home, the couple discussed the amenities and the lifestyle they wanted and came to one conclusion: “We chose Pittsburgh. It met the criteria. We are both West Virginians
and didn’t want grass growing that we couldn’t mow,” he said. They settled in the North Side’s Deutschtown neighborhood and spent three years renovating their house. What has become their dream house, however, wasn’t the one they came to see. They originally looked at the house next door, but it sold quickly. “We asked about other properties, and the developer brought us here and said that we could just do a remodel,” Rick. Sustakoski said.
The house, built in 1890, needed so much more than a remodel. “It was in a pretty rough state. It was broken into three apartments, one on each floor and they were all Section 8 rentals,” he said. “Everything in the inside had been pretty much covered up or removed.” They decided to start with the exterior. “The facade was black. It was still covered in soot. You could not see what the house looked like,” Rick said. A professional cleaning revealed original sandstone with decorative carvings of fairies, stone corbels and lintels, and terra-cotta tile. The old stone front steps were badly worn, so they were removed and reused on an outdoor fireplace in the backyard. Allied Millwork in the Strip District made a new front door and period windows. Heritage Industries custom-made iron flower boxes, window grates and a railing. Bob Baumbach was the lead architect for the 4,000-square-foot interior renovation. Because there was so little left of the original floorplan, he had a blank slate. And when house historian Carol Peterson told the Sustakoskis the building was originally a bakery, they had an idea. Contractors found what they believed was the original bread oven and exposed it, an homage to history and a centerpiece of a warm, welcoming and modern home. The kitchen is a mix of cabinetry stained in warm oak and persimmon red. The counter tops are granite, and beefy wood corbels add heft. The star of the show is a red Bertazzoni 48-inch stove with a pot-filling faucet. The kitchen includes a Miele espresso maker and Electrolux convection oven. Refrigerators and freezers by Thermador.

The irst-loor living room of the Pittsburgh home of Rick and Linda Sustakoskis. “I researched and chose all of the appliances, even the KitchenAid doubledrawer dishwasher that my wife hates,” Rick said. “It’s too short for tall platters and pots.” Other rooms on the first floor include a TV room, powder room, living room, dining room and pantry. Contractors discovered several fireplaces and a stained-glass window underneath plywood. The second level has two bedrooms, two full baths, a sitting room and a laundry room. The master suite is on the third floor. The rear bathroom has a multi-jet shower. “The kids call it the car wash because the shower has so many sprays on the walls and above,” he said. These former suburbanites are loving their urban dream house. “We’ve always lived in suburbia. You don’t end up really knowing your neighbors. Here, we keep an eye on each other’s properties and we know everyone. We get each other’s mail,” he said.
