winter recreation
By Norm Radford – Courtesy of Wallace Chamber of Commerce Wallace winters are cold by California standards, but warm by Montana standards. Snow-covered trails and mountains provide excellent winter recreation. Alpine and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, tobagganing, tubing and ice fishing or whitefish are available for the outdoor enthusiast. Alpine skiing can be enjoyed at Lookout Pass and Silver Mountain ski areas from November through April. Lookout Pass is one of the first ski runs to open for the winter in the Pacific Northwest. Both mountains are groomed, but the “powder” enthusiast can often find uncut trails and spring “corn snows” are very skiable. Both ski areas are within a short drive of Wallace. Snowmobiling trails are groomed from mid-December until early March. Fourteen trails are available ranging from 12 to 65 miles in length. Information is available by calling the Coeur d’Alene River Ranger District at (208) 7832363 or Idaho Parks and Recreation at (208) 682-3814. Trail information may be found at the Historic Wallace Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center, or call (208) 753-7151.

go outside – at the spokane winter fun 2012 Snowshoeing, skiing, tubing and ice skating are just a few of the favorite things to do in the Spokane region in the winter. Spokane Parks and Recreation is offering snowshoeing cross country skiing on mountains and lakes throughout the region, including moonlight trips on Mt. Spokane. There are five major ski resorts within a two hour drive of Spokane. Tubing and sledding can be found at many of the local parks or more officially at Bear Creek Lodge or Mt Spokane Ski and Snowboard Park. Ice skating is tops at Riverfront Park’s Ice Palace, one of the top ten outdoor favorites of Olympic skater Kristi Yamaguchi. www.VisitSpokane.com

Bar Stool Race 2011 Josh Radke and Justin Karst
Grangeville, Idaho, is the hub of a network of over 600 miles of groomed trails from Winchester to Elk City and Dixie. At elevations of 5,000 to 8,000 feet, there are abundant snow covered trails November through April. The groomed trails promise access to over 2 million acres of untracked playground on the Nez Perce National Forest. Snowmobilers based at Grangeville can ride historic Nez Perce Indian and turn-of-the-century gold rush trails. Two favorites are the Elk City Wagon Road and the Old Milner Trail. The Milner Trail, beginning at the Fish Creek Meadows parking lot near Grangeville, stretches over 40 miles to the famous mining ghost town of “fabulous Florence.” Along the way are many interesting side trips and scenic vistas of Gospel Hump Wilderness and the Seven Devils. The Elk City Wagon Road begins a short distance from Grangeville at the town of Clearwater. From there to Elk City is a 40-mile ride on the original trail used by Nez Perce Indians migrating to and from their summer hunting grounds in Montana. During the Gold Rush era, it became the supply route to the mines at Elk City. From Red River, a trail follows the Magruder Road to Darby, Montana. The trail is groomed to Granite Springs, but the route over the pass to Montana, a distance of over 100 miles with no service, is for experienced riders only. From Dixie, trails stretch south to the breaks of the Salmon River, and northwest to the old mining town of Orogrande in the Buffalo Hump country. Lodging and dining services are available at Grangeville. For more information, contact Grangeville Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 212, Grangeville, Idaho 83530 or call (208) 983-0460.
