Local group gets more out of tennis than just exercise By Mary Tatko
Of Target Publications
Leo Hasenoehrl had his first heart attack at 59. Within a fiveyear period, he had three openheart surgeries and was forced to retire from farming at 63. April 29th, he turned 88 years old, and these days the best place to find him when he’s not at his Mission Creek home, near Culdesac, is at the tennis center on Lewis-Clark State College’s Lewiston campus. Hasenoehrl doesn’t necessarily attribute his last 25 years of good health to tennis, but he’s pretty sure it hasn’t hurt. Growing up on a farm, — LEO he saw plenty of activity, HASENOEHRL, but not in the form of orga88 nized sports. “We never got to do any sports, because it’s too busy on a farm,” he said. When he retired, he and his wife started wintering in Arizona, where he took up tennis at an RV park in Mesa. “I never picked up a tennis racquet in my life until I was over 60 years old,” he said. In Mesa, play would start in October or November, then in the spring a team from his park would face off against teams from other parks. Three or four years ago, when he stopped spending winters in Arizona, Hasenoehrl started playing with a group of seniors at LCSC’s tennis center two or three mornings a week. All together, the senior tennis group includes about 16 players,

with at least 12 present most days. The group members meet at the tennis center year-round from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for exercise and camaraderie, not necessarily in that order. “You get to know them personally,” Hasenoehrl said. “Well, we just play tennis and gossip in between,” fellow octogenarian Leland Marvin said. Hasenoehrl’s wife, Wilma, died two years ago, and tennis and his tennis friends helped see him through that loss. “You can’t sit in the house,” he said. “You’ve got to get out and get physical exercise.” Marvin, of Clarkston, seconds Hasenoehrl’s thoughts. “There’s a little challenge to life as you get older,” he said. “And I think one of the main ingredients is keeping yourself active.” A widower after 52 years of marriage, Marvin also came to tennis later in life. “I never knew what a tennis racquet was until five years ago,” he said. “I was about 75 years old then.” Roberta Owens, 84, has been playing with the group about 10 years. “I’ve played tennis off and on all my life,” she said. “Mostly off.” Ken O’Farrell, 57, a Clearwater Paper employee, plays with the group when his work schedule allows. He said playing with older men and women doesn’t slow him down. “They come up with some surprising shots,” O’Farrell said. “Leo is like a secret weapon.” Nancy Houser, 67, agreed. “Leo is one of our better players,” she said. “He really is.
— ROBERTA OWENS, 84
Good play isn’t the only gift Hasenoehrl brings to the group. “My favorite part about Leo is the hug I get from him when he comes in,” Houser said. Ottilie (pronounced Ohtee) Miller, 72, is another of Hasenoehrl’s fans. “I tell you, he’s one neat guy,” she said, adding with a laugh she thinks the real reason he plays tennis is “because he likes to get a hug from a few girls.” In addition to hugs, the players share stories. As Hasenoehrl talked about tennis during a break between games recently, other players tossed out bits of information about the rest of his life. “Ask him about flying,” someone shouted from the court. Hasenoehrl offered that he’d enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II when he was 20 years old, flying B-17 bombers in Arizona for gunner, navigator and bombardier training. If the war had lasted another couple of months, he said, he’d have been fighting overseas. Marvin, eight years Hasenoehrl’s junior, was delivering the Lewiston Morning Tribune by bicycle along a fivemile route in 1945. A subscription was 75 cents a month. Paper carriers received the bill, then were responsible for collecting the money themselves. “It was spending money for nickel ice cream cones,” Marvin recalled. The niches tennis fills for exercise and companionship haven’t carried over to the next generation yet, at least for Hasenoehrl. He has a daughter in Coeur d’Alene and four sons who farm at Mission Creek and Cavendish. Asked if they’ve considered playing tennis, he laughed. “No, Tribune/Steve Hanks they haven’t got time to play,” he said. “When you’re farming, that Hasenoehrl jokes around with a fellow player after a recent match. comes first.” If family history is any indication, though, they should have Hasenoehrl is the oldest of 10 one of his sisters last year, five Their father lived to 92. plenty of time to take up the remaining children from a fam- of the siblings present were 80 Hasenoehrl is sure he sport. ily of 11.
