GRANDE RONDE RIVER FISHING GUIDE ... INFORMATION FOR STEELHEAD – hAPPY HOOK’ERS OUTFITTER Warren Fuller Outfitter – Washington State

Happy Hook’ers Outfitters is owned and operated by Warren Fuller, who has 35 years experience on this river. Warren grew up fishing the rivers of Eastern Washington. The Grande Ronde River is his favorite river to fish. We specialize in personallized fishing trips. Fishing for Steelhead with slip bobbers, back throwing plugs or drifting bait are the main methods used. We also offer fly fishing. Our drift boats are used to guide you to the best fishing holes on the Grande Ronde River in Eastern Washington. If you like to fish this river, consider late fall to late winter for the best experience and fish will be excellent table fare. It doesn’t matter if you are a die-hard steelhead addict or a neophyte looking for your first fish – try the Grande Ronde and you will not be disappointed! Grande Ronde Steelhead fishing opportunities are perhaps some of the best in the Northwest. Make a trip this fall or winter and remember that great Steelhead fishing occurs throughout the season. Please observe the barbless hook regulations and do not remove wild fish from the water. The portion of the Grande Ronde that we will be fishing is in Washington waters, so make sure you are licensed appropriately for these waters. If you would like to try the river portions that are roadless or want a more successful day on the river Happy Hook’ers Outfitters can aid both novice as well as experienced anglers. Whether you are fishing for the first time, have many years under your belt or are somewhere in between, Happy Hook’ers Outfitters will provide a great day of fishing! If sightseeing, photography or natural history is your objective, we would be delighted to show you this beautiful river and canyon.

The Lewis Clark Valley Chamber of Commerce is now accepting registrations for its annual steelhead fishing derby November 17-24, 2012. The return of the derby to the week of Thanksgiving came in response to requests from a majority of past participants and the supporting valley business community. In addition to the change of date, the Steelhead Derby planning committee members and the LC Valley Chamber of Commerce have made other improvements to encourage greater participation in this year’s derby, including adding Washington waters. “We are very pleased to announce that the permitting process has been completed and participants will be able to fish in either Idaho or Washington this year,” LC Valley Chamber of Commerce President CEO Kristin Kemak said. Grangeville, Idaho, is the hub of a network of over 600 miles of groomed trails from Winchester to Elk City and Dixie. At elevations of 5,000 to 8,000 feet, there are abundant snow covered trails November through April. The groomed trails promise access to over 2 million acres of untracked playground on the Nez Perce National Forest. Snowmobilers based at Grangeville can ride historic Nez Perce Indian and turn-of-the-century gold rush trails. Two favorites are the Elk City Wagon Road and the Old Milner Trail. The Milner Trail, beginning at the Fish Creek Meadows parking lot near Grangeville, stretches over 40 miles to the famous mining ghost town of “fabulous Florence.” Along the way are many interesting side trips and scenic vistas of Gospel Hump Wilderness and the Seven Devils. The Elk City Wagon Road begins a short distance from Grangeville at the town of Clearwater. From there to Elk City is a 40-mile ride on the original trail used by Nez Perce Indians migrating to and from their summer hunting grounds in Montana. During the Gold Rush era, it became the supply route to the mines at Elk City. From Red River, a trail follows the Magruder Road to Darby, Montana. The trail is groomed to Granite Springs, but the route over the pass to Montana, a distance of over 100 miles with no service, is for experienced riders only. From Dixie, trails stretch south to the breaks of the Salmon River, and northwest to the old mining town of Orogrande in the Buffalo Hump country.Lodging and dining services are available at Grangeville. For more information, contact Grangeville Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 212, Grangeville, Idaho 83530 or call (208) 983-0460.

WHY TRACK SANTA? NORAD carried out its first Santa tracking in 1958 after inheriting the tradition

The Wallowas — Too unique, too beautiful, too close not to experience this winter.

from CONAD. Since that time, Canadian and American men and women who work at NORAD have responded to phone calls from children personally. Additionally, media from all over the world call NORAD on Christmas Eve for updates on Santa’s location. Last year this web site was visited by millions of people who wanted to know Santa’s whereabouts. This year, the information is provided in six languages. NORAD relies on many volunteers to help make Santa tracking possible. Hundreds of volunteers spend part of their Christmas Eve at the Santa Tracking Operations Center answering phones and emails to provide Santa updates to thousands of inquiring children worldwide. www.noradsanta.org/en/history.php

LINCOLN CITY, OREGON

Dayton WA, “The Town that still believes”

THE BEACH IS OUR PLAYGROUND

We want you to enjoy all the things the beach has to offer, but please be safe. One rule of beach safety is to stay off logs. Tides and undertows can make a large log flip or turn and cause serious injury. So when on the beach, play it safe – stay off the logs. Storm watching is a great beach activity too, so when storms approach, watch as they come across the sea, but do it from a safe place. For some, there’s no prize like an agate. The semi-transparent stones are pieces of quartz, carnelian, chalcedony and jasper that come loose from the headlands during storms and are left behind when the waves recede at low tide. Agates come in all colors, but most of them are clear or milky. Some even contain tiny fossils. Japanese glass fishing floats are highly valued by dedicated beachcombers. Some of these absorbingly beautiful finds are huge, up to two and three feet in diameter; most, however, are between four inches and a foot wide.
