Haines, Alaska Retail trade and services comprise the greatest single form of employment in Haines. However, the fi shing industry, government, schools, construction and transportation contribute substantially to its economic base. There is no lack of things to do in Haines. Outdoor recreation of all kinds is enjoyed year round. Fishing for king, chum, pink and sockeye salmon as well as halibut is excellent in Lynn Canal. Shellfish such as crab and shrimp are also caught; however, catches are regulated by the State of Alaska. Wildlife includes black and brown bear, moose and mountain goats. The region around Haines is the only place in southeastern Alaska that supports mountain goats and moose, and it is thought that these two species migrated into the area following the opening of the Haines Highway. The Chilkat Eagle Preserve, located about 15 miles northeast of Haines, is the site for the largest gathering of bald eagles in the world. Eagles are plentiful throughout southeast Alaska and may be observed any time during the year. However, the largest concentration of eagles starts in November and lasts through January. As many as 3,500 eagles have been observed along the banks of the river at the height of the eagle gathering. The 49,000 acre Eagle Preserve was created in 1982 as critical habitat for endangered bald eagles. One of the best ways to experience the Bald Eagle Preserve is to explore it by jet boat or float through it on a raft trip. Trips depart daily from Haines. New sight-seeing tour companies offer a variety of tours for travellers who are interested in natural history and bird watching. There is a new tour boat operator offering trips on Chilkoot Lake. There are three local air services that offer sight seeing trips to Glacier Bay, which is only a short distance by air from Haines. The Indian people of

the Haines area are very rich in cultural assets. They are impressive artisans and craftsmen. Their artwork takes the forms of wood carving and totem pole carving, metalwork and most famous of all, Chilkat blanket weaving. Several notable totem poles are displayed in Haines: Friendship Pole in front of the elementary school; Thunderbird Pole at Chilkat Center for the Arts; Twin Headed Poles at Waterfront Park on Beach Road; Welcome Totems at the town’s entrance on Haines Highway.

Salmon River Experience... They first applied for their outfitter’s license in 1978, with the goal of providing the highest quality white water experiences available that were fun, safe and adventurous, while at the same time sensitive to the cultural and environmental needs of the river. Thirty-two years later, much has changed at SRE, but not their passion for affordable excellence and stewardship of the river, promoting responsible enjoyment of Idaho’s austere back country. Salmon River Experience invites you to join them at Riggins, Idaho for a day (or more) of western white water excitement. Ride the waves in Time Zone, Tight Squeeze, Traps Creek and Black Rock, just to name a few rapids. And no one puts on a better riverside deli lunch than SRE with plenty of fresh deli meats, cheeses, breads, salads, vegetables, chips and cookies. In addition to shorter trips at Riggins, SRE also offers deluxe all-inclusive white water

vacations on the Salmon River’s Lower Gorge and Hells Canyon of the Snake River. Whether your’re looking for a splashy one day getaway or deluxe wilderness vacation, SRE invites you to check them out. You can find them online at www.salmonriverexperience.com or call them at 800.892.9223.

Lochsa River ~

Lochsa River Outfitters perfect for friends and family while enjoying the high alpine vistas, the magnificent serenity of Idaho’s wild lands, chance encounters with wildlife native to the area, stream or lake fishing, star-filled skies and evenings shared around the campfire. And you don’t have to be an expert horseman to experience either a trail ride or longer summer pack trip. Also scenic float trips on the Selway and Clearwater Rivers.

The Lochsa River, located in north central Idaho’s Clearwater National Forest, is one of the premier white water rivers in the west. Snow melt in the spring creates one of the wettest rides in the country within this steep granite valley. Three Rivers Rafting brings you the opportunity to experience the intense Class IV+ white water of the Lochsa in a guided paddle raft. The Lochsa River is one of the most beautiful places in the Northern Rockies. A green cedar and fir forest with steep slopes and abundant wildlife, the river corridor itself gets exciting during the spring snow run-off. The section of the Lochsa that we raft has a gradient, or drop, of about 40 feet per mile. The rapids contain large standing waves and incredible circulation holes. Our one day trip covers about 22 miles and 40 class III-IV+ rapids. Included with the trip price is a full lunch on the banks of the river and a wet suit, booties, helmet, etc. to wear in the boat. Our trips begin and end at Three Rivers in Lowell, Idaho.

The Wallowas are as beautiful as ever and there’s even more to do Come to the heart of Hells Canyon All American Road when you enter Wallowa Country! Here is Oregon’s secret getaway. You are sure to find solitude from the urban mania as you view the jagged snow-capped peaks of the Eagle Cap Wilderness and adventure the rugged Hells Canyon. Wallowa Lake officially opens on Memorial Weekend. But you can be the first to usher in spring time in the Wallowas. If you don’t feel prepared to hike the rugged Wallowas, then cheat like many of us do, and ride the Wallowa Lake Tramway to the top of the mountains above Wallowa Lake, where you can get a birds-eye view of the Eagle Cap Wilderness and Idaho’s Seven Devils. There is plenty to do as you hike, bike, drive the canyon lookouts of Hells Canyon and the back roads and trails of the Wallowas. Late May and early June is a prime time to view wildflowers, wildlife and birds on the Zumwalt prairie and Hells Canyon. Photography is at its best in spring! If you haven’t been here for awhile…come see what’s new. Arrowhead Chocolates – a fun-loving, chocolate

eating, cozy place for people to watch how chocolates are made and (better yet) consumed. AND Steins Distillery – isn’t this what should follow chocolate? That’s right! Steins Distillery’s Fine Rye Vodka or their spring 2010 line of cordials. It is all one big adventure! Finish this getaway as you tour Joseph’s Main Street Art Walk and see the magnificent arts & bronze sculptures. The beauty of this area is a haven for the arts and is home to many of our finest artists and sculptors. You will find this to be true when you tour our world-famous bronze foundries. The clean, fresh mountain air, and crystal clear-flowing rivers and streams offer a welcome respite for visitors who come to Wallowa County – It’s the adventure you will never forget! www.wallowacountychamber.com. For visitor accommodations call the Wallowa County Chamber (800) 585-4121 and for recreation information call the Wallowa Mountain Visitor Center (541) 426-5546.

Take the tramway to the 8,150 foot summit of Mt. Howard. Stop and eat at the Summit Grill and Alpine Patio.
