They first applied for their outfitter’s license in 1978, with the goal of providing the highest quality white water experiences available that were fun, safe and adventurous, while at the same time sensitive to the cultural and environmental needs of the river. Thirty-two years later, much has changed at SRE, but not their passion for affordable excellence and stewardship of the river, promoting responsible enjoyment of Idaho’s austere back country. Salmon River Experience invites you to join them at Riggins, Idaho, for a day (or more) of western white water excitement. Ride the waves in Time Zone, Tight Squeeze, Traps Creek and Black Rock just to name a few rapids. In addition to shorter trips at Riggins, SRE also offers deluxe allinclusive white water vacations on the Salmon River’s Lower Gorge and Hells Canyon of the Snake River. Whether looking for a splashy one day getaway or deluxe wilderness vacation, SRE invites you to check them out. has outdoor activities that includes hiking, biking and fishing the scenic rivers and lakes. The biking opportunities are mostly in the areas of mountain biking on the logging roads and trails in the national forest. It is as common to see a herd of elk while biking as it is to see a herd of cows from the back roads of Wallowa County. The Wallowa Mountains and adjacent Hells Canyon Scenic area have some of the most diverse hiking in the state of Oregon. You can decide to hike into the canyons of the Snake River drainage, viewing basalt formations towering over you. You can also ascend into a mountain meadow with views of thousands of wildflowers. It is common to see bighorn sheep, elk and deer in the lower elevations with mountain goats common in the elevations about 8,000 feet. Fish can be found in all of the lakes and rivers of the Wallowa Valley. Wallowa Lake holds some of the largest Kokanee in the state with a 6 lb 4 oz fish caught during May. The rivers in the area are great for catching rainbow trout while brook trout are easily caught in the higher streams and lakes. The quaint little village at the head of Wallowa Lake has a variety of activities which include horse back riding, miniature golf, go carts and bumper boats.
