Are you planning a family outing to the local national forest to cut that “perfect” Christmas tree? The Nez Perce - Clearwater National Forests offer the following tips for success. Obtain a Christmas tree permit from Forest Service offices or private vendors in local communities. One permit must be purchased for each tree, up to a maximum of three trees. The permits cost $5.00 apiece. Snowy Sunset Over Lolo Creek, Clearwater National Forest Christmas trees can be cut anywhere EXCEPT campgrounds, administrative Photo courtesy of Robert Millage, Robert Millage Photography, Kamiah, Idaho sites or on private properties within national forest boundaries. Cut your tree Snowy Sunset Over Lolo Creek,asClearwater National Forest close to the ground as possible. Please don’t cut a large tree just to take the top! Be prepared for winter conditions. Keep emergency courtesy of Robert Millage, Robert Millage Ph Photography, otography, Kamiah, Idaho food, clothing and Pharmacy & Gifts equipment with you and let others know where you are going. Check for local road conditions before leaving home. For more information, call (208) 983-1950 in Grangeville or (208) 476-8267 in Orofino.

SNOWMOBILING IN GRANGEVILLE

Grangeville, Idaho, is the hub of a network of over 600 miles of groomed trails from Winchester to Elk City and Dixie. At elevations of 5,000 to 8,000 feet, there are abundant snow covered trails November through April. The groomed trails promise access to over 2 million acres of untracked playground on the Nez Perce National Forest. Snowmobilers based at Grangeville can ride historic Nez Perce Indian and turn-of-the-century gold rush trails. Two favorites are the Elk City Wagon Road and the Old Milner Trail. The Milner Trail, beginning at the Fish Creek Meadows parking lot near Grangeville, stretches over 40 miles to the famous mining ghost town of “fabulous Florence.” Along the way are many interesting side trips and scenic vistas of Gospel Hump Wilderness and the Seven Devils. The Elk City Wagon Road begins a short distance from Grangeville at the town of Clearwater. From there to Elk City is a 40mile ride on the original trail used by Nez Perce Indians migrating to and from their summer hunting grounds in Montana. During the Gold Rush era, it became the supply route to the mines at Elk City. From Red River, a trail follows the Magruder Road to Darby, Montana. The trail is groomed to Granite Springs, but the route over the pass to Montana, a distance of over 100 miles with no service, is for experienced riders only. From Dixie, trails stretch south to the breaks of the Salmon River, and northwest to the old mining town of Orogrande in the Buffalo Hump country.Lodging and dining services are available at Grangeville. For more information, contact Grangeville Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 212, Grangeville, Idaho 83530 or call (208) 983-0460.

SNOWHAVEN OFFERS AFFORDABLE SKIING

Those looking for an affordable ski vacation don’t have to look much further than Snowhaven, just seven miles down the road from Grangeville on the Salmon River. A great “haven” for downhill skiing, snowboarding and tubing, Snowhaven offers two ski lifts and one tubing lift to serve more than 60 acres of snow-covered slopes. They also offer courses for beginning through advanced skiers, snowboarders and tubers. For tubers, Snowhaven has added a 600-foot long lift with two 850 foot long runs and a 150 foot vertical drop. The runs will be lit for occasional night offerings. For more information call (208) 983-3866 or www.grangeville.us/idaho-county/snowhaven.

WHY TRACK SANTA?

NORAD carried out its first Santa tracking in 1958 after inheriting the tradition from CONAD. Since that time, Canadian and American men and women who work at NORAD have responded to phone calls from children personally. Additionally, media from all over the world call NORAD on Christmas Eve for updates on Santa’s location. Last year this web site was visited by millions of people who wanted to know Santa’s whereabouts. This year, the information is provided in six languages. NORAD relies on many volunteers to help make Santa tracking possible. Hundreds of volunteers spend part of their Christmas Eve at the Santa Tracking Operations Center answering phones and emails to provide Santa updates to thousands of inquiring children worldwide. www.noradsanta.org/en/history.php

GREY FOX VACATION RENTALS

Grey Fox Vacation Rentals can help you find a place to stay at Cape Meares, Terra Del Mar, Newport, Neskowin or Lincoln City. For your vacation, rent an ocean front/view home, river front home or beach cottage. Then visit these great towns for a relaxing vacation.

The Olympic Game Farm is nestled in the shadow-lands of Washington’s Olympic Mountains. Co-founders Lloyd and Catherine Beebe and family have succeeded in pairing wildlife and visitors in a manner that preserves the dignity and power of the animals while allowing the public to enjoy a safe “up-close and personal” experience. • Dozens of Wild Animal Species • Petting Farm • Gift Shop • Driving Tours 362 Days a Year 1423 Ward Rd., Sequim, WA 98382 Call: (360) 683-4295 or toll free 1-800-778-4295 www.olygamefarm.com

We want you to enjoy all the things the beach has to offer, but please be safe. One rule of beach safety is to stay off logs. Tides and undertows can make a large log flip or turn and cause serious injury. So when on the beach, play it safe – stay off the logs. Storm watching is a great beach activity too, so when storms approach, watch as they come across the sea, but do it from a safe place. For some, there’s no prize like an agate. The semi-transparent stones are pieces of quartz, carnelian, chalcedony and jasper that come loose from the headlands during storms and are left behind when the waves recede at low tide. Agates come in all colors, but most of them are clear or milky. Some even contain tiny fossils. Japanese glass fishing floats are highly valued by dedicated beachcombers. Some of these absorbingly beautiful finds are huge, up to two and three feet in diameter; most, however, are between four inches and a foot wide.
