MIKAELA RUSSELL While growing up in Danbury, Connecticut I fell in love with art at an early age. I have always preferred the fantasy genre and the creative freedom it provides. However, I am also an admirer of portraiture and work that appears realistic. While I started out working with traditional media, I now work primarily with digital techniques due to the freedom it provides to express myself. My passion for artmaking has helped me develop a fantastical, realistic style in which I create colorful conceptual illustrations. Most of my work features strong-willed independent women interacting with the environment around them. I’ve always admired and respected strong women, especially where they can appear as both beautiful and strong despite stereotypes often found within the fantasy genre. The style I have developed through my studies has also lent itself to projects centered on contemporary subjects. The portfolio I have put together shows my ability to apply my style to a wide variety of assignments across different genres. My hope is that this flexibility will prove to be beneficial as I pursue a career in illustration.
