my new heartbeat can’t count the times I’ve silently yelled at my baby, “What on EARTH do you need right now?” Trying to understand our children’s cries, babbling and secret languages can be frustrating. I thought we found the solution with baby sign language, but I’m finding that gestures made with tiny little hands can still be unclear. We bought the baby sign books when I was pregnant. But when the baby actually

repeatedly utter Katie Saltz “EeeEee!” Now, she will have a full mouth, an animal cracker in her hand and start tapping and mumbling “Eee,” spraying crumbs everywhere. When she is telling me she is hungry with a mouthful of

Who’s Got Time to Teach Baby to Sign?

came, they were used more as coasters than study materials. When are you supposed to sign the word for “milk” between fixing a bottle, feeding the baby, burping, cleaning the spit-up and washing the pile of bottles in the sink? Most days, I was lucky if I remembered how to spell “milk.” Now a toddler, CeCe’s communication skills have improved, and through daycare, she has picked up one actual sign – “eat.” At first I enjoyed this new use of her tiny hands. She would walk in the kitchen and start tapping her lips with her fingers. Ah! She is ready for dinner, fantastic. Then it became any time she caught my eye, the tapping would start and she would 8 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

spaghetti, I think we may have missed the mark. Sometimes I think CeCe is showing me a new sign. I watch and wait, try to decipher what message she is sending until I realize she is just performing some kind of hokey-pokey/ chicken dance hybrid a cappella. For parents who want their children to grow up with the skill of knowing sign language, diligent baby signing may be a great idea. But for us, I think our signing is going to be a little more primitive. If I can get recognizable gestures for “eat,” “potty” and “please,” then I will feel successful. Mission Statement: “Children need to know they are special and loved – especially on their birthday. Unfortunately, because of their financial situation, many families in our community are not able to do anything for their children on their birthdays. Sometimes, the child’s birthday isn’t even acknowledged. For these children, receiving a “Cake Boss” style birthday cake gives a sense of joy and being valued that they will never forget.” (www.sweetblessingscakes.org) Passions: Reading, spinning, creating a sense of community On Parenting: “Parenting is hard, and I make mistakes every day. Food forThought

(1 banana per serving)

Banana Boats • 1 banana

• 1 tsp. semi-sweet chocolate chips (the mini ones work best)

• 1 Tbsp. mini-marshmallows • Aluminum foil

w Peel back just one strip of the peel on a banana, but leave the end attached. w Scoop out a little trench in the banana with a spoon. w Fill the trench with chocolate chips and marshmallows, and press the strip of peel back into place. w Wrap the banana in foil, and nestle the banana boat into the coals of your fire or fire pit, or place on the rack in your grill, for 5 to 10 minutes. w Test the banana boat by squeezing it gently. When the banana begins to soften you’ll know it’s done. w You can customize your banana boats by adding peanut butter, chopped nuts, other flavors of baking chips, or coconut. These can also be baked in your oven, or in the microwave (without the foil). Nutrition Content per serving: 136 calories 2g fat 32g carbs 3g fiber 1g protein

Spice Up Your Summer at Camp Carnegie

A student cooks up some fun at Camp Carnegie

N

ot only did Sarah D’Orazio’s daughter relish her experience at Camp Carnegie last summer, Mom got a savory home-cooked meal out of the deal. How’s that for a succulent experience. Eleven-year-old Julia tasted life in two camps last summer at the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning – creative writing and cooking. On her first day of camp, Julia took a field trip and learned a new recipe. She was so excited she just had to prepare the dish that night for her family. “We stopped at the grocery on the way home,” Sarah said. “She cooked dinner

and did all the chopping herself. We didn’t have to lift a finger. And it was good. A light, summery, healthy pasta dish. “It was nice to see her so enthusiastic.” Sarah, a microbiologist at UK, was so impressed, she is enrolling Julia in Camp Carnegie again this summer. Julia will get to choose from six camps offered in July – TV Production, Kentucky Imaginarium, Comic Camp, Food Writing, Urban Agriculture and Jewelry Making. The teachers are experts in their fields with relevant contacts in the community. The lineup this year is: TV Production: Lynn White, a middle school teacher. Kentucky Imaginarium: Bo List, a producer and actor with Balagula Theatre. Comics: Stephen Moore, an artist and digital studio assistant at Lexington Public Library. Food Writing: Kari Patrick, a teacher and writer. Urban Agriculture: Ryan Koch, executive director of Seedleaf. Jewelry Making: Sonja Brooks, artist

and director of Sisohpromatem Art Foundation. All the camps feature field trips and a final project – two selling points for kids. “Our campers get unique experiences that are fun and worthwhile,” said Program Director Laura Whitaker. “We try to show them how broad the job spectrum can be. We show what options are out there – some they never would have thought of.” Camps are half-day, week-long classes for rising sixth through eighth-graders – an important consideration, according to Sarah D’Orazio. “The camps are intended for kids in middle school, and I was really attracted to that,” she said. “I also like that the subjects are interesting and different. “I had never heard of the camps until I went to the Summer Camp Fair (sponsored by Lexington Family Magazine). These camps are a great program, and they’re incredibly affordable.” Altogether, a tasty treat for area middle-schoolers. Y

What child wouldn’t love a giant playland with birthday party rooms, 18-foot high slides, redemption games, a cotton candy machine, and Monkey Joe himself, who strolls through the 16,000 square foot fun zone passing out hugs? Monkey Joe’s has an obstacle course suitable for kids 12 and younger, and the Mini Monkey Zone is a toddler play area to keep little ones safe and secure. Maintaining a safe and healthy environment is a top priority. In order to eliminate up to 99.9% of most common germs, Monkey Joe’s sanitizes

Falls are the leading cause of unintentional injury among children age 14 and younger. To reduce the potential for falls, as well as reduce their severity, Safe Kids recommends that you: 1. Actively supervise children on playgrounds and age-appropriate equipment. 2. Place protective surfaces under and around all playground equipment. 3. Install safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs. 4. Buckle children into their car seats, high chairs, shopping carts and strollers. 5. Install window guards on upper-floor windows. 6. Stop at four: Do not raise windows more than 4 inches. 1000 S. Limestone 859-323-1153

he might not acknowledge it, but Molly Newland, owner of Kid to Kid, an upscale children’s and maternity resale store in Lexington, is a hero. In the span of little more than one year from 2009-2010, the 35-year-old mother of three became pregnant with her third daughter, was diagnosed with breast cancer, underwent surgery and chemotherapy, delivered Lucia (a beautiful healthy baby girl) and then purchased Kid to Kid, her debut as a business owner. How’s that for courage and fortitude? Quick to praise others, Newland attributes her strength to the support provided by family, friends and her church. “This is just what God put on my plate at the time,” she said. “And the support I received was amazing. For the Race for the Cure, we had about 300 people sign up for our team. That was the biggest team at the Race.” In 2009, eight weeks into her pregnancy with Lucia (her other daughters are Andrea, 6, and Bella, 4), Newland received the chilling diagnosis.

rescription drug abuse and misuse is rising at alarming rates. And a large number of abused prescription drugs are obtained from the home medicine cabinet. Know the Key Ages When Visual Issues Begin

T

he earlier a visual problem is detected, the better. And early detection works best when parents know the warning signs. There are critical ages when problems can surface, indicating that a child’s visual system is developing abnormally, according to Dr. Rick Graebe, a behavioral optometrist in Versailles. Dr. Graebe treats some patients with Vision Therapy, a noninvasive technique that is a kind of physical therapy for the eyes, brain and body. He recommends that parents recognize these key developmental stages. Age 3: This is when children stop using taste, smell and touch to “see,” and the visual system becomes dominant. Dr. Rick Graebe Family Eyecare Associates and Children’s Vision and Learning Center 105 Crossfield Drive, Versailles www.myfamilyvision.com / 859.879.3665.

Dr. Rick Graebe not only recommends an exam at this age, his office offers free visits for 3-year-olds. At this age, strabismus and/or amblyopia (lazy eye) can begin where the eyes stop working in tandem, and one begins to wander, turn in or turn out. “The brain says, ‘I can’t use both eyes – it’s too hard,’” Dr. Graebe said. “So the brain will turn off one eye.” In the U.S., 75,000 3-year-olds per year will suffer from amblyopia. With amblyopia, the eye does not always wander or turn. The signs may not appear right away and can be detected only by an eye exam. Dr. Graebe not only recommends an exam at this age, his office offers free visits for 3-year-olds to catch the problem early. Age 6: This is when children start school, and sustained, close-up visual work is required for the first time.

A child with visual issues may avoid reading, have headaches, rub eyes, cover one eye to read or become fidgety when reading. Teachers often pick up on these warning signs first. Age 10: At school, children first “learn to read.” Thereafter they “read to learn,” a process that dominates the classroom by the time a child is 10. If visual problems surface then, classroom performance may begin to drop. When school issues emerge, parents need to ask one question: “Is my child reaching his potential?” If not, the problem could be visual. As Dr. Graebe says, because “70% of what we perceive after the age of 3 comes through the visual system, where would be a good place to start?” ” Y

Is your child having a hard time in school? Give us a call to learn about this month’s free Vision Therapy workshop!

Many kids are misdiagnosed with ADHD or a learning disability, when the actual problem is vision-related. Even with 20/20 vision, the eyes may not work together. This causes headaches, fatigue, and lack of concentration. Sound familiar? Some doctors would suggest medicating your child. Perhaps a better option is a breakthrough treatment called Vision Therapy. As one of only five board certified Vision Therapy practices in Kentucky, Family Eyecare Associates has helped many children succeed in school, without the need for glasses or unnecessary medication. Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease Makes a Body Ache

W

hen I was an intern, I came down with hand, foot, and mouth disease. Strictly speaking, I had herpangina, since the horribly painful blisters were only in my mouth. It was one of my most miserable experiences. I feel for every child who I see with it. Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a viral illness caused by members of the enterovirus family, especially coxsackievirus A16. It affects mainly younger children, but even adults can get it. It occurs mainly in summer and fall, but I have seen outbreaks at other times of the year. The illness usually starts with a fever, decreased appetite, malaise and a sore throat. After a day or two, painful blisters or ulcers develop in the mouth. A day or two after that, a red spotty rash can develop. This is usually on the hands and feet, but it can be other places. The rash may turn into blisters. HFMD without the rash is referred to as herpangina. Sometimes a person will get the skin rash without the mouth blisters. Symptoms usually last a week. HFMD is spread by nasal and oral secretions, skin blister fluid and bowel movements. It can be spread by direct contact and from contaminated surfaces.

A person is most contagious the first week of the illness. The time from exposure to coming down with symptoms of the disease is three to seven days. The disease can best be prevented by washing the hands with soap and water, washing and disinfecting toys and surfaces, and avoiding close contact with those who have it. It is best to keep children with the illness home from school or daycare until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours. Treatment of HFMD consists mainly of pain control and staying hydrated. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be given for pain and fever. Older children and adults can use analgesic throat sprays or mouthwashes for relief. Cold liquids and foods may give some relief. Although plenty of liquids are recommended to avoid dehydration, hot and acidic liquids (such as some juices) should be avoided. Rare complications of HFMD include viral meningitis, encephalitis, and temporary fingernail and toenail loss. HFMD is not the same as hoof-and-mouth or foot-andmouth disease that livestock can get. It is not spread from animals to humans or viceversa. I will be very happy if I never get it again. Y
