Foundation Areas of Focus
Sylvia McKenzie, Former LMC Extended Care employee, recipient of Emergency Care Fund
About the Foundation By offering a variety of hospital-based and community programs, the Foundation supports Lexington Medical Center’s mission of providing quality health services that meet the needs of its community. The Lexington Medical Center Foundation focuses on developing and funding programs consistent with the strategic vision of the hospital. It partners with thousands of people, businesses and organizations – all giving in different ways. Some work at Lexington Medical Center. Others live in the community. A few even reside in different states. But all share the Foundation’s goal of promoting the wellness, peace of mind and dignity of patients at Lexington Medical Center. Most importantly, Foundation donors provide the community with a priceless commodity — hope.

“I knew missing our daughter’s graduation would break my husband’s heart. We hoped there was something, anything, that could be done. When we found out the Foundation was going to help, it was a huge relief. He was able to go to our daughter’s graduation and her celebration afterwards – they didn’t rush us. They let us have the experience we would have had if Jake wasn’t sick. They’ll never know what it meant to my husband and our daughter. That moment was priceless.” – Lynne Harris
Cancer Care Our Cancer Care programs help patients focus on their treatment and survivorship by assisting with non-medical emergency needs, providing wigs, mastectomy bras and post-surgical kits, and offering key support services. The Harris Family Jake Harris was diagnosed with stage IV kidney cancer in April 2019. After surgery on May 1, his family learned his cancer had spread to his back and
other areas. Despite another emergency surgery on his T1 and T5 vertebrae, Jake became wheelchair bound. His family worried he would not be able to attend his daughter’s upcoming high school graduation. The Foundation provided transportation for Jake to attend the ceremony. His wife Lynne is grateful for the Foundation’s support and for those at Lexington Medical Center who loved and supported her family during their journey.

“I want to thank the Foundation for awarding me a scholarship this year. It truly says a lot about an organization that supports its employees to further their education. I cannot express my gratitude enough as this scholarship helps alleviate some of the financial burden during my final semester of nurse practitioner school. I am honored to be a recipient. I hope to graduate and continue working for Lexington Medical Center and remain involved in such a notable organization.” – Dana Cochran

Cardiac Care Our Cardiac Care programs eliminate barriers between heart patients and a full recovery through patient discharge kits, Cardiac Rehabilitation, and smoking cessation courses. Smoking Cessation Program Jack Hanrahan was a 40-year-plus smoker. He quit many times on his own and tried with a support group, but he could not stay smoke-free for more than a year. He desperately wanted to be able to play and keep up with his grandchildren and enjoy his retirement.
“I cannot say enough about the Foundation’s smoking-cessation program. The tools and support we received are second to none. They provide so much knowledge, care and patience to help us in our journeys. I believe it’s why the success rate is far above other programs. They even provide monthly support group meetings to help us stay nicotine-free. Since my quit date of June 12, 2018, I have lost approximately 50 lbs. and have hiked or walked about 3,500 miles. I also go to the gym regularly for weight training. The difference in my physical and mental health is tremendous. If you or anyone you know smokes, please get into the Lexington Medical Center smoking-cessation classes. It can save a life.” – Jack Hanrahan

The Amador Family Ruth Amador was just beginning her third trimester when she found out she had preeclampsia. She delivered her son Ian at 32 weeks, and he spent four weeks in the Special Care Nursery at Lexington Medical Center. The Foundation provided the Amador family with a Halo® Safe Sleep swaddle and an infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation kit with a video and practice doll so Ian’s older siblings — ages 14, 12 and 6 — could learn how to respond in an emergency.

Patient Care Patient Care programs help enhance hospital services throughout LMC’s network and are often the result of employee–submitted internal grants. Exercise Program for Patients with Cancer or Chronic Illnesses Hospital-to-Home Care for Elderly or Medically Fragile Patients Diabetes Education Caregiver Training through HUGS (Helping U Grow Strong) Program
“I am so proud to share my experience as a volunteer for Leeza’s Care Connection. I spent many years being a caregiver for family members and living a life of isolation with little support from any outside agencies. When the Lexington Medical Foundation began to support many of our programs, there was a big awakening for the community. Caregivers need care, too.” The support of the Foundation included training through the HUGS program (Helping U Grow Stronger) and assisted me in visiting other facilities. Carroll Campbell Place opened their doors to me, and I was able to support the family caregivers with visitations and friendship. I have become a stronger and healthier volunteer for our caregivers.” – Britta Couture
