appy Spring Everyone! What a beautiful time of year in South Carolina. This issue is always one of my favorites; where we talk about Extreme Makeovers. I don’t know if it’s just me or if it’s just the fact that all of America seems to love a good makeover. LWM doesn’t look at makeovers like Hollywood does. We aren’t always featuring a person who got a new “do” or lost 100 lbs. (Which is a great accomplishment and it certainly changes your life. ) We take a different spin on makeovers. We like to talk about little things that can make big differences in your life. One way you might experience an attitude makeover is to start a gratitude journal!
If you have been reading long you know that I love Lexington- no really- I love Lexington. One of the reasons I love Lexington is Lexington people. Lexington people are a different breed. Most of them are kind and understanding at least the ones I encounter. Our article on the Rutledge family home make over is one example. From a horrific fire to the gathering of the neighbors and massive rebuild this family has not only gotten a “home” makeover, but came to understand the power of people coming together for a common cause. From adding olive oil to your diet or changing your insurance plans this issue is packed full of great ways to change something (if you are inclined to do so) in your own life. I know I don’t have to say it but I want to remind you to tell our advertisers how you found their business. T
his July, I will have been a Mom for 14 years. I’m starting to figure this job out! One thing is certain: I could not have made it this far without all the help from Maggie’s Other Mothers (they know who they are), chardonnay, and music. Don’t misunderstand me. I have really bad taste in music. But so does Maggie, and this is how we bonded from the start. In the year 2000, Maggie loved the boy bands. I remember listening to NSYNC and dancing with Maggie. Well, I danced and she wiggled inside my tummy.
ed pretty great at the time, true love sounds nothing like that. True love sounds like her daddy singing Blue-Eyed Girl to me, even though the song is actually called Brown-Eyed Girl.
I need the music to remind her to come home. Even though Mag will go off to college someday and might follow JLo’s lead – dating a series of dumb-but-sexy back up dancers, she can always come home.
Once she was outside my tummy, we danced to some Christina Aguilera (before she was Xtina) – our favorite song was Come On Over. I held my little bald baby girl and we bounced while I sang my version “come on over, come on over Mag-gie!” When she could stand by herself I introduced Mag to Janet Jackson. Maggie held onto the kitchen counter and tastefully bounced to Nasty Boys. I am such a good influence. Mercifully, I was not her only influence. When she was two, Maggie started saying “I-BEECUSE” after dinner. I had to call her Other Mother/babysitter Kay to find out what in the world my daughter was saying. Kay had taught her to say “may I be excused?” when she was finished eating. I think this balanced out what I had taught her – that Let’s Go Crazy is the perfect song to crank up real loud and play repeatedly while you run in circles through the house in your diaper. When Maggie had matured sufficiently and was emotionally ready, I introduced her to Britney. (She was four years old). Our favorite song was Toxic. Mag knew all the words.
She explained to me that when Britney sang “You’re dangerous - I’m lovin’ it” that Britney was talking about traffic. Because bad traffic can be so dangerous. We listened to this song so often, Maggie suggested my sister name her first-born child Toxic. From age 4 to 11, the music was a whirl of Justin Timberlake, Britney, Maroon Five, Britney, Adele, Nelly Furtado, Shakira, and Britney. On the first day of 6th grade we were both extremely uptight. Ok, I was extremely uptight. Mag was fine. I was about to drop my BABY off at this big awful school. We played Lady Gaga. And it soothed us both. I realize I only have 4 more years of music with Maggie. Ok, I
know there will be music after that too, but it won’t be the same, because I won’t control the Ipod. I have so much more music to play for Maggie. Mag needs to hear and see Milli Vanilli. She needs to know that just because a man looks nice and is a good dancer does not mean he has true talent. Maggie needs to know she can choose her own music and dance her own dance. Just because everyone else is drinking margaritas and lining up to do the Macarena doesn’t mean she has to. I need the music to help me explain true love. I’ve already made Maggie listen to Fleetwood Mac sing The Chain and explained to her that the two vocalists loved each other and hated each other at the same time. I’ve explained that while those vocalists sound-
Even if she makes bad decisions like changing her name to a symbol and later realizes she has made this bad decision and then decides to change her name back to a non-symbol, everyone will forgive her, especially me. And she can come home. If I know anything, I know that even though Maggie is now potty trained, even if she now knows Britney was not talking about traffic, and that Nasty Boys might not have been an appropriate song for a dancing toddler - she will always listen to music with me. And if the timing is right, and no one is looking, we might put on Let’s Go Crazy and run around the house in circles.

usan, her husband Bryan, and her two twin boys Zachary and Nicholas have had a lot thrown at them over the past year. Between a house fire, living in hotels, and the struggles of everyday life, it hasn’t been easy. However, coping has been made possible by the love and support of their local community, as well as the Lord.
Susan Rutledge is Susan Rutledge is like most mothers I know: caring, supportive, and kind. However, most mothers haven’t had their homes suddenly destroyed and been forced to live in hotels for months at a time. Last August, The
Rutledge’s home in Lexington caught fire early one morning. “We were asleep. I had to wake up early that morning. [My son] Zachary had been taking care of me all summer. He was a troop-

er. I heard a beeping noise, but it didn’t sound like a fire alarm. I figured the house alarm had been set off somehow. The phone rang and
it was the alarm company. Then I could see that there was smoke in the room. I didn’t even put my glasses on; I just got in my wheelchair and started yelling for the kids. Eventually, we got out of the house. It wasn’t until we were leaving that the fire alarm
actually went off.” The family was very fortunate to get out of the burning house unharmed. However, the blessings did not stop there. “That day, the Red Cross put us up at the Ramada Inn. From there, the insurance took over. I’m surprised they didn’t cancel us. We had an outstanding policy. We didn’t find a rental home until December, so we stayed in a Holiday Inn. Everyone at the hotel was extremely nice to us. Some people would even hand us money when they heard what had happened. We couldn’t have asked for a better place or nicer people.” In addition to this, the people of Lexington stepped up to help the Rutledge family. “We had people who drove the boys
to school and me to my doctors appointments. Lexington middle school gave us money, which was great. Someone donated a washer and dryer to us. The people in our own neighborhood took us in and gave us clothes. Our church, Faith United Methodist, even gave us money for school supplies and uniforms for the boys, which had all been burned in the fire. Just last week the family moved into their new home, built by JDM Building Group. “We are so thankful for JDM. They just started building in October. They did everything so quickly!” Through all the support they have received, Susan says that God has definitely been there through it all.

We couldn’t have made it without the Lord and without our family pulling together. Now we’re just trying to pass along the support and generosity we have received.”
“He got us out of the fire. I never thought in a million years that this would happen. We’re back in church now, which we had been away from. There was a family from the church that needed to get rid of some furniture, so they donated dishes, sofas, two beds, drawers, and a TV to us. Never in my life have I seen such an outpouring of generosity.” Such traumatic events can definitely make someone realize what is really important in life. On her family life now and outlook on life, “We grew stronger as a family through all of this. People still donate clothes, and people even helped us out at Christmas. I don’t even know how some of these people heard about the fire. It was amazing. Also, we have www.lexingtonwomanonline.com

Benifits of a CAT Friendly Practice D id you know that cats have surpassed dogs as the most popular pet in the United States? It’s true: there are 86 million owned cats compared to 78 million owned dogs. However, compared to dogs, twice as many cats never make it to the veterinarian. This occurs for a variety of different reasons: 60% of cat owners report that their cat hates going to the vet, and 38% of cat owners report that they get stressed just thinking about bringing their cat to the practice. Another obstacle is that most people perceive that cats take care of themselves and don’t get sick. Unfor-

tunately this is an untrue perception. Cats can get sick for a variety of reasons even when they are very young, and if caught early, can greatly extend their quality life.

octor Larry Stroud, a West Columbia native, knows a thing or two
about the area, including how to run Triangle Pharmacy, a business that has been in the family since the 1950’s. “I grew up in West Columbia, then went to USC for pharmacy school. Both of my parents were pharmacists. After that I went to Atlanta. There I got my doctorate at Mercer University, and was also offered a faculty position

there. I came back to West Columbia after my father deceased so I could take over Triangle Pharmacy, which he owned at the time. It’s been family owned since the day it opened.” So what about Triangle now? Stroud expands on how the pharmacy has stood the test of time: “It was one of the first pharmacies in the area. Even though we’ve moved locations, we’ve been very successful. Now my son

In addition to that, I have served on the board at Lexington Medical Center, and I am currently a part of the MUSC Board of Visitors and the Congaree State Bank board. I really enjoy giving back to the community.”

he origin of pain is both a physical and emotional sensation. How the brain processes this sensation differs individual to individual. Physical pain can be from your muscles, joints, fascia and or nerves. One should note that pain is a very important communicator in your body. Acute pain happens suddenly and can be due to an injury a person sustains or can stem from a surgical procedure which they have undergone. In addition to all that Linda does for her company, she has also worked as a volunteer EMT for the past 15 years and as a volunteer with RMAT, a team of emergency professionals who serve the Midlands in the case of a disaster. She says she loves being the “go-to” person for individuals in all types of need. Linda has been a registered nurse for 36 years, and worked as a nurse’s aide in a hospital for four years before that. She explained that the changing nature of the medical field was what first drew her to it. She and her husband went through their nursing program together and were married just four days after they both graduated. They have two adult children who are also both involved in the health care field. Linda launched Brook Health Care six years ago. She says that her extensive experience in the medical field has helped her realize that people do best when they stay at home, with their family and loved ones surrounding them. “The importance of a smile from a grandchild or the ability to pet the dog is very healing,”
It’s clear that Linda and the rest of Brook Health Care is willing to go above and beyond to help those in need! Linda explains. She went on, “As an experienced home care nurse I am given the opportunity to intervene and help prevent readmission and keep people at home safely and securely, while still allowing them to make choices and live the way they choose.” Linda explained that they are always growing in terms of the level of care that their 15-20 devoted
employees provide. These caregivers, Linda says, are the “heart of the company” and are willing to help out in any way possible. It takes a special type of person and caregiver to work in home health care, Linda explains. One must have the ability to work independently, and respond to a variety of different situations. I
f you’re searching for an Interior Designer in the Lexington area, Chris Metz is the woman to call. As Owner of Chris Metz Interiors, she has been serving the residential and commercial community for over 15 years. I had the opportunity to talk to Chris about her passion for her business. Ever since the age of ten, Chris Metz knew the design business was for her. However, she owes her talent and success to the Lord. She explains, “I always have to touch and experience the textures around me...walls, fabrics, and art. I believe that God has given each of us unique gifts and talents to explore and build on. everal years ago, Kaye and Greg Gerrald went on a cruise to Italy and Greece that would change their lives. Over the course of their trip, they became “enamored with the Mediterranean”, as Kaye puts it, and came home with a desire to share their newfound love with family and friends. After a trip they later made to Helen, Georgia, where they discovered a locally owned olive oil and vinegar shop, the Gerralds decided to take the plunge and open their own Mediterranean inspired store! Right after Thanksgiving of 2013, The Classy Cruet opened for business in The Shoppes at Flight Deck. “My husband likes to joke that I couldn’t decide what I wanted so I bought a whole store,” Kaye laughs. “People kept asking if I was nervous about this, or anxious about that, and I knew I should have been scared, but I wasn’t,” she says. When I walked into The Classy Cruet to speak with Kaye, I was first struck by how beautiful the artwork and décor was (a gift from Susan Brush, a local muralist and friend of the Gerralds). And then I realized I was looking at an entire roomful of olive oils and vinegars (more than 50 flavors and varieties), most of which I was unaware existed until that moment. It turns out that tasting olive oil is much like tasting wine, and it should also be sampled at room temperature starting with the mildest varietal of oil and working up to the most robust oil. And perhaps the biggest surprise of the whole experience for me was learning that vinegars should be sampled on vanilla ice cream! I was hesitant to try this combination, but once Kaye talked me into it, I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it is (and how much healthier it is than chocolate sauce)!

A great benefit of incorporating olive oils and vinegars into your daily diet is all of the health benefits that it provides. sat down for an interview with Connie at her store location on Main Street. From the very first moment I noticed that she had a certain happiness about her. When she began talking to me about her background, I knew why. “I’ve been doing hair for over forty years now. Over the years, I have come and gone from the business. I’m a single mother, and I’ve also escaped domestic violence. My daughter gave me the strength I needed to go into business on my own. She gave me the incentive to keep working. I wanted to be a good role model for her. That gave me the strength to provide for my daughter and be a positive role model for her.” Hello Gorgeous has now been up and running for 13 years. As I asked her about her salon, I saw that she has a great love and appreciation for her clients. “It’s a job that provides joy. gium on a mission trip. My mission while on that trip was to cut as many refugees’ hair as possible. It was an eye opening experience. It gave me a whole new appreciation for my home. The thing is, I really can go wherever I am needed. Over the years I have done hair in nearly every situation, including nursing homes and hospitals. I also specialize in custom color, bridal parties, pageants, and of course, proms.” Connie definitely makes her clients feel good in more ways than one. She explains, “I strive for perfection in my field, especially in color and design haircuts.” She also stays on trend with the technology she uses at the salon. ucy Howard Martin is a three time cancer survivor and one amazing little lady. Her given name is Ruth but you will only find her by that name if you are looking for her in a hospital. She was the wife of a minister for many years and is the visitation pastor at Life Springs Worship Center on Platt Springs Road, in Lexington SC. So typically she is not a patient she is visiting other patients!
Miss Lucy was initially diagnosed in 2000 with colon cancer. She went for a routine colonoscopy and when she awoke from the procedure her family and her pastor were there. She was told she had cancer and surgery would be required. Upon hearing the news she said, “Okay. I have peace.” I inquired as to what brought about that peace, “Knowing Him (the Lord), not just because you have heard of Him, or read about Him, but 30

knowing Him is what gives me that peace.” There wasn’t a moment of fear because from the beginning she knew she was in God’s hands. She had gone through the loss of her husband to prostate cancer in 1996. It was at this time she called on that same peace to sustain her through his death. Not having him to lean on during this time was the toughest part of her diagnosis. I have to tell you listening to Miss Lucy tell her story was a blessing the first time, but the second time as I listened to her talk; it was as if she was preaching a sermon that I truly needed to hear. The peace that she spoke of wasn’t just a peace she needed for surviving a cancer diagnosis and treatment but a peace we all need to survive every day and the troubles of life. She is a woman whose inner glow
beams all the way to the outside. I have met two other women like that in my life. Her journey wasn’t without some complications and she shared some of those with me as she told me about the second and third diagnosis. She also has some trouble with standing because of a knee problem, but she doesn’t dwell on that. “I don’t ever cry out about being in the valley because it takes two mountains to make a valley, so you have been somewhere ( a mountain top) to get to that valley.” She did share this with me and I felt it was important to share. When the doctors thought they missed something, Miss Lucy was called back for some tests. Her prayer www.lexingtonwomanonline.com

was, “Lord let them find it, and let them see something that will impress them in some way toward you.” The doctor returned and excitedly expressed, “We got it, girls! We got it!” Miss Lucy turned to look and saw a cross on the screen. She didn’t say a word and the doctor exclaimed, “And look there is a cross on it!” Miss Lucy knew God was answering another prayer. If you have been in church most of your life you probably know someone that reminds you of Miss Lucy. Although she quoted many scriptures during our time together I asked her what her favorite quote or scripture is, “My favorite scripture is from Genesis to Revelation. The word is God in written form and He has already done what he said he would do.” She did give me a few specifics after some prodding and I have included them for you. “The place of all power, if just two people will agree on two things- one thing- it shall be done.” She is referencing Matthew 18:19 KJV “ 19Again I say unto you, That if two of you 32

shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.” When asked if she would like to share anything else about her journey this is how she responded, “Every day is a plus -every day is a day that the Lord has made regardless of what comes our way. He has made this day!” I felt like when Miss Lucy left that day the air had been sucked out of the room. She was so refreshing. I asked for a few “Lucisms”- little phrases and sayings that you may

hear her say if you are around her very much- This is what her friend shared with me. I love to interview survivors, because I believe each of us have the ability to survive more than we can even imagine. I especially loved interviewing Miss Lucy Howard Martin because he is not just surviving she is thriving at age 70 something , still working, still ministering to those who are sick and still inspiring all those around her to live a better life!

hat a busy spring it has been. As a mother of four, I find I am increasingly busy this time of year. Trey has dug in his heels and visited several colleges this year, and has an upcoming interview that we are hoping will make his final decision on where he will be furthering his education. So many choices; I just don’t remember it being this much work when I was going through it.Abby has been busy with the Musical Production of Shrek, where she played Fiona’s Ogre mother this year. She had so much fun and looked adorable all painted green, with her little green stage son and her Green stage husband. It was a blast to watch. She was also one of the Three Blind Mice. WKHS did a great job with the Production. Congratulations Mrs. Owensby and all the Musical Theatre Students. Colton loves baseball. No, you don’t understand. Colton LOVES baseball. He is having a great time playing again this year, and he has learned at age 11 how to wash his own uniform! I am so proud of him. You would not believe how much that one simple task helps me. All of the sudden, my little boy is 5’2 and in a man’s shoe size 9. It is hard to believe he is growing so fast. Seems like yesterday, Colton was all bundled up in green ready to leave the hospital for his first trip home. It was 9/11/2002. Where does the time go?

a thousand stories on the ride home about his new friends, coaches and this game he so enjoys. I am amazed at how having children opened my world. I am now a soccer mom. It’s funny; I can’t remember what I did before them. Who did I hang out with; who were our friends? Mostly family, I think. Once they started playing sports and developing their own individual interests, our little world became bigger. We meet more of their friends and their friends' parents, and su ddenly I know some of those families better than I know some of my own relatives. It’s wonderful how common interest bring us together - the way that the love of a sport or music makes us feel connected. I think that God made us that way so that we would want to communicate and spend time with one another; so that when someone was hurting or needed help, there would be other people to lean on. No matter what your common interest are or how the friends you have come into your life, friendship can be work, but friendship is worth it, if it is a give and take on both sides. There is a song I heard at a house party in Lexington where the lovely Lauren Lucas was performing with her friend Sara Beck. It’s called “To Love Somebody” and simply says, “There is one good reason we were put on this earth is to love somebody.” I hope we love a lot while we are here.
