2019–2020
2
Dear secondary school students, It is our pleasure to introduce our line-up of extracurricular activities, including academic support, sports, performing arts, art classes and other opportunities for this school year. We know that the athlete and competitor in you will find the individual or team sport that fits you best in our Flames program, and we trust that the creative person that you are will find many opportunities to express yourself in our newly-expanded line-up of performing art programs. Most importantly, participating in those activities, you will build strong relationships and make many friends. Make your choice, and see you soon performing on stage, in the gym or on the pitch.

Dear students and parents, You will find in this section information about our new LFC extra pass for middle-school students, as well as classes offered to highschool students (drivers ed, costume design) and adults (sewing class). LFC extra – Middle school pass You will discover in LFC extra – Middle School Pass a new way to support your child’s academics needs. As part of this program, a supervised space for homework will be provided daily until 5:30pm, and at least one Lycée teacher will be available for support every day from 3:45pm to 4:45pm. Teachers with different specialties (math/science, French, English) will be hired on different days of the week, and possibly on the same day based on the level of registrations. One supervisor will also be available every day of the school year, and this person will serve as the link between your family and the teachers available for academic support. Access to the program is on an as-needed basis, so that your child can come and go when participating in Flames or other extracurricular activities. In addition, students who have purchased the LFC extra pass will be given access to our newly created middle-school choir and French theater program at no additional cost. Sincerely, Jacques Fournier Director of extracurricular programs

Workshop 1 : 20 hours of instruction dates: September 30, October 7, 14, November 4, 11, 18, 25, December 2, 9, 16 Under the direction of professional costume designer Meriem Bahri, the students participating in this weekly workshop will discover the secrets of costume design. Students will learn techniques for reading a script, fashion drawing, choosing fabrics and sewing. They will practice identifying clues that help interpret the characters’ appearance in order to create costumes that reinforce the story being told. Students will practice drawing and painting by developing costume models. The choice of materials will result in a visit to the fabric stores to collect samples. They will learn basic hand-sewing and machine-sewing techniques. This atelier will also include a visit to a sewing workshop and a behind-the-scenes tour of a professional show to discover the different professions related to costume design. Workshop 2 : 20 hours of instruction dates: January 6, 13, 27, February 3, 10, 24, March 2, 9, 23, 30 This second workshop will be a continuation of the first. More complex sewing projects will be carried out and the link between costume design and art history will be further developed. Students will apply the knowledge gained in Workshop 1 by studying the musical Fiddler on the Roof performed at LFC this year. They will help costume designer Meriem Bahri to enhance the stock of LFC costumes, assist her during fittings and make necessary modifications to the selected costumes. Workshop 2 will end in April with the performances of Fiddler on the Roof and their involvement in costume preparation for the show, back stage changes, etc.

Dear Flames Fans and Athletes! The Flames are ready to welcome you for some new athletic adventures! We can’t wait to have our gymnasium full of fans cheering for our volleyball players or basketball teams and our new turf field full of soccer and rugby players representing our school with pride and honor. This year we are opening two new sports in order to offer the very best to our students: rugby and sailing! We decided to start two new partnerships with the Chicago Lions Rugby Club and the Chicago Yacht Club of Belmont Harbor. Our students will have the opportunity to learn with the best coaches in Chicago how to sail and compete on the Lake Michigan. Our young athletes will also be able to discover Rugby on our new turf field with Andrew Rose as a coach. Andrew used to play professional rugby and he is in charge of the entire youth program at the Lions Club. Our goal this year is to keep our program successful and fun for our students! The Flames program is built to offer each athlete a unique experience full of emotions and challenges! Our athletic program is based on such values as respect, responsibility, friendship, fighting spirit, solidarity, tolerance, diversity and surpassing oneself. Last year over 88% of our secondary school students participated in the Flames and our teams won a lot of trophies! All our teams participated in the Regionals competitions and represented our school really well! • Last fall, our High School Boys Soccer team won the 1st place of the IHSA Metro Prep Conference. • Our Golf team won the First Tee League. • Last winter, our Middle School Girls Basketball team won the CAMS league. • Our High School Girls Basketball team won the 1st place of the IHSA LakeShore Athletic League. • In spring , our Middle School Girls Soccer team finished second of the CAMS league.
• Our High School Boys Volleyball team won the title in the IHSA Metro Prep Conference and in the IHSA LakeShore Athletic League. • Our High School Girls Soccer team had the same success in both IHSA conferences winning the two 1st place trophies. • Our young 7th grade student Layla Lerus qualified for the track and field States championship in the 100m and 200m dash and ended as the 11th fastest player in the Illinois State!
Our passionate and experienced coaches are, as always, the many challenges of the game to ensure that all the students from 5th to 12th grade have a unique and unforgettable athletic season. On behalf of the Flames, we wish all our athletes and fans a fantastic school year and a successful season! GO FLAMES!

Basketball As the most important sport in American schools and in Illinois, basketball is an essential part of the LFC sports program. The winter season is mainly dedicated to basketball, and the success of our program is growing every year. Coaches are chosen to ensure our young athletes have the best learning experience possible. Every year, most of our teams finish the season among the top three teams in their leagues. Last year, our JV girls middle school team won the CAMS league trophy and our high school girls team won the IHSA LakeShore Athletic League. This year, our team will be participating again in the Illinois Regionals Tournament and will try to reach the final at home!

Cross Country / Track & Field We are offering cross country in the fall and track & field in the spring. Our team will be participating in track meets against the best schools in Chicago. Last year, we won few meets and most of our athletes got a medal in their race. In High School, our athletes are competing in the Illinois tournament. Our young student Layla Lerus reached the IESA State championship race of the 100m dash and 200m dash! Students will have the opportunity to develop their athletic skills in a variety of ways, including cross country, sprint and relay, and hurdles. Our Head Coaches Lauren McDonnell, Naja Lerus and Manu Lerus are building a really strong program based on each athlete’s skills, needs, and wishes. This program is highly recommended and very successful.

Rock Climbing Rock climbing is a sport that originated in the French mountains and has really grown in the USA over the past few decades. The motor and concentration skills involved will be major assets for our future climbers. We will have several specialized coaches in charge of our program, which starts in early September. Please note that transportation between the school and the club is not provided. This program will take place on Sundays and is a great addition to a weekly sport. Our climbers will have the possibility to climb on the outdoor wall in fall and spring when weather allows it.

Rowing Rowing is becoming very popular in many schools all around the country and it is very appreciated by most of the universities in North of America. More than that, this sport is very complete and build real athletes thanks to values and the physical and mental effort that are necessary to be successful. We decided to create a rowing team since we have a unique facility in Chicago: Lake Michigan. The team will practice three times a week with a possibility to extend the program to 5 times a week. We will compete against other schools/teams of Chicago. Our rowers will have the opportunity to practice indoor during the winter and outdoor during the fall and spring seasons. The cost of this program is incredibly affordable thanks to our new partnership with the Lincoln Park Boat Club.

Swimming This year, we are opening a new High School team! Our swim program takes place at the Lincoln Square Athletic Club. We started a team when we arrived on our new campus and the program is highly successful. We have been more and more efficient in the different meets we have been invited and our swimmers are now very competitive. This sport is very popular and suitable for all. Our new campus gives us access to a great private pool with professional coaches. The bi-weekly sessions allow all our students (beginners or experienced) to improve throughout the year and take part in at least 5 competitions adapted to their level.

Tennis Our tennis lessons welcome students of all levels. In order to improve the quality of the program, we have only indoor tennis classes all year long for both level, middle school and high school. For the middle school, students will practice once a week at the McFetridge Sports Center and their professional coach is taking care of our program. In high school, a high-level team emerged a few years ago: we provide our athletes with an intensive program all year long that includes two practices a week as well as tournaments in the spring.

Whether it be with our girls’ teams in the fall or our boys’ teams in the spring, the Flames have reached finals every year! Last year, our high school girls team won the IHSA Metro Prep Conference trophy and our high school boys team won the title in the IHSA LAL and Metro Prep conference! Our coaches are confidently putting together a great program so that our teams can achieve their potential. We are also playing in the Illinois Regionals tournament at the end of each high school season.

Dear students and parents, Our performing arts extracurricular department is expanding with new opportunities for students to perform on stage, build selfconfidence, develop strong friendships and express their inner creativity. In addition to our popular musical theater program that will be returning this year with Fiddler on the Roof, LFC extra will now offer two choir programs for middle-school and high-school students, as well as a French theater program that will represent LFC at the Première Scène festival in New York. With new programs come new faces, and we are proud to welcome in our artistic team two multi-talented new teachers: Park Krausen, for many years the artistic director of Atlanta’s Théâtre du rêve, the only Francophone professional theater in the United States, and Amanda Murphy, Music director at Second City. Learn more about them in this brochure. All students registered in the performing arts extracurricular department will be given the opportunity to sign up for a trip to Broadway at the end of January, in conjunction with the Première Scène festival organized by the Lycée Français de New York. Sincerely, Jacques Fournier Director of extracurricular programs

Winner of nine Tony Awards, Fiddler on the Roof has been touching audiences worldwide with its humor, warmth and honesty. A staple of the musical theatre canon, this universal show showcases iconic and beloved songs such as “Sunrise, Sunset,” “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Matchmaker, Matchmaker.” Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof’s universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness.
STAGE DIRECTOR: Caryn Ott–Hillman Musical Theater teacher at LFC since 2014, Caryn Ott-Hillman is also a teacher at Chi Arts, Actors Gymnasium, and Chicago Opera Theater. Director/choreographer for Children’s Workshops at Light Opera Works, Caryn studied Vocal Performance/Opera at Roosevelt University. She has been praised for her masterful direction of the Lycée productions of Les Misérables, The Sound of Music and Into the Woods.
MUSIC DIRECTOR: Amanda Murphy Music Director and Faculty member of The Second City, Amanda Murphy is also a music teacher and choral conductor at St. John’s Lutheran School. Amanda is skilled at writing, composing, teaching improvisation, music directing, accompanying, and helping students with their performance techniques and vocal training. She has a passion for teaching and raising the bar of excellence while honoring where the student currently is on their music journey. 44
