You don’t need a special press pass to review this month’s e-bulletin, and no audience participation unless it’s on your terms! Welcome to our August edition of T Monthly! It’s a busy time across both cities, but particularly in Edinburgh as we watch the population rise and suitcases roll! As ever this is a multitude of Fringe shows to indulge in, but if you’re keen to find the shows that are made by, for and/or about LGBTQ+ themes, look no further than the Somewhere at the Fringe: Your Guide to this year’s LGBT+ shows. We have also highlighted some fantastic trans-themed shows in our Community News section below, including 147Hz Can’t Pass, “An introduction through person, not definition, to trans non-binary experience, 2018.” and LGBT theatre adaptation, Ganymede. If you’re trans and in or near Glasgow, don’t miss out on this year’s Glasgow Transition Support Course, giving you some dedicated, supported time to explore how you’re feeling about your gender and next steps. Lothian Trans Support Programme welcomes Sylvia Cohen! We welcome new team member, Sylvia Cohen, to take on the role of Development Worker for the Lothian Trans Support Programme. Here is a bit about them in their own words: “I’m really honoured and delighted to take up this post in LGBT Health & Wellbeing, to do, what I believe is really important work to support the trans community. In my role, I’m offering one to one support to provide a space for those who need to talk about their gender identity and find resources and practical information. I will also be kicking off some new group activities and events, and I am excited to hear from if you have some ideas for relevant activities or workshops! Some of you may know me already from my presence at the centre in various events, including T time, but most likely from the community group New Beginnings. I have run New Beginnings for about two years, and I can only describe it as a group of incredible, beautiful humans who gather together twice a month to support each other, explore and discuss their LGBTQ+ identities, and to have a good chat. Outside of running the group, before joining LGBT Health & Wellbeing, I’ve worked as a writer for 11 years in a number of tech companies, and an instructor at Carnegie Mellon University prior to that. I am quite excited to take on this position and hope to create a space where you can feel valued, supported and connected to the community and resources you need.” You can reach Sylvia for one to one support and/or information about resources, practical information, events and activities for the trans community @ sylvia@lgbthealth.org.uk.

An important new piece of research on trans healthcare in Scotland! The Scottish Public Health Network (ScotPHN) conducted a health care needs assessment about trans people and their access to specialist Gender Identity Services in Scotland that was published in May 2018. This was done with the following aims and objectives in mind: 

To identify the level of need and map current service provision

To understand the service user experience and access to services

To understand how the current gender reassignment protocol is being adhered to and what support services are important to users

To identify the inequalities resulting from current service provision

You can read Scottish Trans Alliance’s Community briefing paper which includes the Executive Summary and Recommendations. You can read the entire report at: https://www.scotphn.net/wpcontent/uploads/2017/04/2018_05_16-HCNA-of-Gender-Identity-Services.pdf

Ganymede at the Fringe Trans title character, trans actor! Ganymede is a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's As You Like It. It's a love story, it's a happy story, it's a slightly tragic story, it's a funny story - but what makes this adaptation different is that not only is the title character trans, but (unlike Hollywood) Typecast Productions cast a trans actor in the role! And another trans actor to play a secondary role. Oh, and the writer / director of the piece is trans too. If you like seeing fresh new takes on classic old tales, by people with personal connection to the stories they're telling, and want to support trans creativity, come to St Augustine's Church on George IV Bridge in Edinburgh at 10am on any day (except Sundays) from the 6th - 25th August to watch Jamie Gould's Ganymede. Meanwhile, follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/typecastprod/ to follow what we've been up to, link to our fundraising page, and see how we get on!

LGBTI Liaison Officers Tackling all forms of Hate Crime remains an absolute priority for Police Scotland. Every incident has a significant impact on the victim, their family and wider communities. More than 90 officers have been trained in conjunction with Equality Network, Scotland’s national LGBTI equality charity to help prevent hate crimes. Victims of LGBT Hate Crime have all sorts of reasons for being reticent to approach us. Making ourselves more approachable may be a simple as offering to meet people in plain clothes, at a neutral venue etc. LGBT liaison Officers can be contacted by phoning 101 and will have an understanding of LGBTI issues after receiving training. The caller can then make an appointment with one of the officers who can meet in plain clothes and at a neutral venue which is most suitable to the caller. Any issues can then be discussed in relation to hate crimes, or incidents where the person has perceived a crime to have been committed. If required, arrangements can be made to meet with an officer at LGBT Health & Wellbeing’s Howe Street Office within office hours and I can be personally contacted by people in Edinburgh through LGBT Health & Wellbeing if required.

Loud & Proud at the Fringe & a fond farewell to Karen Dietz! Loud and Proud will be performing their usual Fringe concert with proceeds going to Waverley Care on Saturday 18th August, 7.30 pm at St Cuthbert's. This is an extra special concert as it is our last with the wonderful Karen Dietz (quite a big change for the choir!). It would be great if you could be there to celebrate this with us.

SIRENS @ EdFringe - Deaf + hearing cast, LGBTQ+ story, BSL inclusive, fully captioned! You're an immortal demi-goddess whose only job is to sing and look beautiful. No, this isn't a show about BeyoncĂŠ. Three Greek sirens find themselves washed-up on Hastings beach. It's 2018, and sitting around naked on rocks is no longer en vogue. But the sirens are still cursed: any man who hears their voice dies instantly. It's a bit of a drag. Award-winning Zoo Co returns to stick two fingers up at gender expectations with their trademark visual storytelling, stunning projections and electro-folk soundtrack. Sirens has a BSL inclusive narrative and is fully captioned - actors on stage use sign and spoken English, with no BSL interpreter on stage. It has an LGBTQ friendly narrative and a dodgy Freddie Mercury drag king act to boot. We have aimed to ensure that the access for d/Deaf or HoH audiences is really celebrated and central to the show, every show is fully accessible to both d/Deaf and hearing people, and sometimes, the hearing people have to use the captions for once instead, as scenes take place in BSL! We are working with Jamal Ajala for the first time, a rising star and brilliant Deaf actor, who performs alongside 4 hearing actors trained in BSL. All shows are Relaxed Performances, ideal for audiences who might not have been to the theatre before. Recommended age is 14+. The venue is wheelchair accessible.
