News, events and support opportunities for trans people, including non-binary people, across Scotland. A warm welcome to our final edition of T Monthly, for 2017. The winter is upon us and whilst the outdoors get colder, we have a selection-box of events to tell you about this month. This time of year can be a tough time for some, and the festivities can be overwhelming. So whilst you may find yourself feeling less inclined to venture out and about, have a read of the various welcoming spaces and supports available across the festive period, as a reminder that you’re not alone. Trans Day of Remembrance 2017 Thank you to all our contributors and attendees at our Trans Remembrance events in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. The gatherings were a poignant reminder of the strength and care that forms the pillars of our communities here in Scotland. We thought about those across the world who are not so supported, those still facing immense prejudice and challenge, and those we have lost from our own community. A special thanks to Jo Clifford, S for the wonderful visuals, and all our T timers for the lovely readings at our ceremony. Coming up for 2018! You’ve told us what you’d like to see happening in our workshops and social spaces and so we’re now excited to give you a flavour of what’s to come across Glasgow and Edinburgh, from January through until March 2018… We’ll include all the further details and links in our January edition: Transition Support Course (Edinburgh); Gender Recognition Reform Consultation; LGBT Swimming; Rainbow Families Ceilidh; Trans Pride Social; Nonbinary Night (now monthly in Glasgow); Headucation: hair & makeup workshop and much, much more… Meanwhile, if you fancy some company over the Christmas break, our LGBT Helpline will be open on the following dates: Tues 26th & Weds 27th Dec, 6-9pm, Tues 2nd & Weds 3rd January, 12-9pm on 0300 123 2523. Have a safe and happy season, just the way you want it to be, Jules If you’d like to promote your own activities, group or events for trans, including non-binary people through T Monthly, you can contact me via jules@lgbthealth.org.uk or by calling 0131 523 1104, I’ll be happy to help - The submission deadline for the next edition is 3rd January.

Free, 2-day non-residential course for anyone who self-identifies as having trans, including nonbinary gender identities. The course will provide safe and supportive opportunities to learn more about your options and rights, meet and connect with others, share your experiences and take part in confidence building workshops. We recognise that everyone’s journey is different. The course is not designed to tell you how to transition, but rather to give you space and time to think about your identity, how to keep yourself well and to equip you with information about your options. Who is facilitating the course? The course will be facilitated by Jules Stapleton Barnes and Matson Lawrence from the Lothian Transgender Support Programme, with support from our Mental Health Development Worker, Alison Wren and James Morton from the Scottish Trans Alliance. I don’t live in Edinburgh, can I still take part? Yes. The course takes place in Edinburgh but is open to anyone, wherever you are based. We also deliver the course in Glasgow annually. If the course is heavily subscribed, we may have to prioritise people who live nearest to Lothian. Please note participants will need to make their own way to and from the venue. I’ve done the course before, can I take part again? If you have taken part in one of our Transition Support Courses before and you register again, you will automatically be added to our reserve list, as we are prioritising people who have not taken part before. Jules will be in touch in early January 2018 to confirm whether a place is available for you. To register, please complete a registration form by January 5th - please note, Jules will confirm receipt of your registration by email. Paper copies of the form (and in larger font) are available upon request. For more information: E: jules@lgbthealth.org.uk T: 0131 523 1104

Equal Recognition - have you say https://consult.gov.scot/family-law/review-of-the-genderrecognition-act-2004/ Scottish Trans Alliance and Equality Network are calling for the reform of the Gender Recognition Act. We are calling for the Scottish Government to recognise trans people’s right to self-determination. We know that achieving these calls will not resolve all trans equality and human rights issues – there is other work to be done. These three calls are key strategic priorities and are all within the power of the Scottish Government to act upon. Three calls for trans equality: 1. Introduce legal recognition for people who do not identify as men or women The law should be improved to provide legal recognition and identity documents to people who identify as other than men or women. No one should be forced to have a gender listed on their birth certificate or passport which does not correspond to how they actually live and identify. Many countries already legally recognise that some people do not identify as men or women and provide them with legal documents, such as birth certificates and passports, which respect their non-binary gender. (Having a non-binary gender identity is not the same as being a physically intersex person.) 2. Remove the psychiatric diagnosis requirement from legal gender recognition
Trans people can change their gender on their passports and other day-to-day documents without having to see a psychiatrist. However, the process to change legal gender on a birth certificate requires an applicant to receive a psychiatric diagnosis and to provide a detailed psychiatric report about their life history, current circumstances and identity in order to prove that diagnosis. This unnecessary and intrusive requirement undermines the personal autonomy of trans people because it places psychiatrists into the inappropriate role of gatekeepers to legal rights. Psychiatry should be about helping people improve their mental health and not about deciding which trans people merit access to their human rights. 3. Reduce the age at which people can get legal recognition of the gender they live as Currently a young person under the age of 18 cannot apply for a gender recognition certificate to correct the gender listed on their birth certificate. This undermines their self-esteem, violates their privacy and exposes them to discrimination. Significant numbers of young people are living successfully in a new gender with the full support of their parents and school teachers. Although they could easily satisfy all of the conditions required to receive gender recognition young people are discriminated against because of their age.
