July 2016 News, events and support opportunities for transgender people across Scotland Greetings T Monthly readers and a very warm welcome to our whistle-stop tour through July’s events and news. June has presented challenges both globally and personally. I was so very proud to see so many folks stand in solidarity in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, for the victims of the Orlando massacre and for freedom and equality everywhere. These themes were very much present at T time Edinburgh this month, as we spent creative time producing placards for Scotland’s Pride celebrations this summer. Thanks to all those who took part and supported the session, from which we now have a range of handheld placards to wave proudly. Pride season kicks off in Edinburgh this weekend, with Pride Edinburgh’s programme of activities, but firstly LGBT Health’s annual Pride Breakfast. It’s tasty affair, with a delicious range of treats and eats, live entertainment (including the mesmerising Belly Dancer, Iraya Noble!) and most importantly, a warm huddle of community members to meet ahead of the march. Also this month… read my recent event report for the Sex, Relationships and Intimacy workshop delivered in May as part of our Transgender Support Programme, hear about some exciting events coming up and look out for all our wonderful T time activities happening east to west. In times where our sense of belonging, self-confidence and strength of communities are tested, be reassured that here in Scotland, there are thriving networks of people providing friendship and support to trans, non-binary, queer and LGBTI people right across the country. There are also organisations like LGBT Health, which will continue to provide welcoming spaces for you to all be safe and proud of who you are. Until next month, peace and happy pride, Jules If you’d like to promote your own activities, group or events for trans people through T Monthly, you can contact me via jules@lgbthealth.org.uk or by calling 0131 523 1104, I’ll be happy to help.

What’s happening in Fife? Fife LGBT Buddy Group for Pride Edinburgh Celebrate being LGBT by attending Edinburgh Pride on Saturday 2nd July. We would love to see Fife LGBT+ community and supporters join us at our annual Pride Breakfast www.tinyurl.com/PrideBreakfast2016 or for the Pride Parade. Our idea is to help link up LGBT+ Fifers who don’t want to travel across to the city on their own or who want to join up with an even bigger group. We’ve created a Facebook Pride group. This group is meant to be a safe space for you to connect with others who would like to celebrate Pride. If you wish to, you could then organise amongst yourselves to buddy up and come together. Feel free to invite people you know who could benefit from this group, we would like for you to take ownership and create your own community. The group is set as 'closed' so people can only be invited or approved by members. What you post on the page will only be seen by members and approved by an administrator beforehand. Whilst those settings provide the group with a minimum of privacy and safety, please be cautious about what you post online. Offensive, threatening or personalised comments won't be tolerated.

Love BEATS All - Wednesday 29th June In the wake of the terrible massacre at the Orlando Pulse nightclub, Edinburgh stood together at a vigil to send love, solidarity and support. A number of those who attended are local musicians and they decided to take it a step further and actively raise money. From that a special fundraiser gig comes to you, hosted at Bannerman's on the 29th June 2016. Two of Edinburgh's top drum crews will be playing, and all proceeds go to the Equality Florida Pulse Victim Fund. Details of the event can be found on Facebook event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/865269203579020/ and tickets are available online here: https://tickets-scotland.com/events.html?event_method=viewevent&event_id=cf4e73b0-396611e6-b2cc-22000b75ede9. Tickets may be available on the door depending on pre-sales. There will also be donation boxes and a number of Pride-themed badges and stickers to buy, the funds from which all go to the fund. So come along, listen to some funky drum beats, stand in solidarity and send support to the victims of this senseless hate crime. If you are unable to attend or want to donate more, you can support the fund here: https://www.gofundme.com/PulseVictimsFund

The Little Foxes In 1998 I commissioned Peter Thomson to paint a scenario focusing on an horrific homophobic murder that occurred in Edinburgh ten years earlier, in May 1988. To date, this painting, entitled The Little Foxes, has only ever been seen in private by guests and visitors to my home. However, it has now been selected to be shown in THE SCOTTISH ENDARKENMENT exhibition at Dovecot Studios, hanging alongside similarly darkly-themed works by other talented contemporary Scottish artists such as John Bellany, Joyce W. Cairns, Ken Currie and Helen Flockhart. About the same date as when The Little Foxes was commissioned, a similarly horrific homophobic murder occurred in Wyoming, U.S.A... However, unlike the Matthew Shepard case, the Edinburgh murder did not cause national outrage, or attract international media attention, or have a play and books written about it. So perhaps, in a small way, The Little Foxes will make up for this. THE SCOTTISH ENDARKENMENT runs until 29 August 2016
