Strictly Come Salsa! Aquarian Party Saturday 5 February Pennard Community Hall Swansea SA3 2AD 8pm - midnight
New venue
£5 waged, £3 unwaged
We kick off the New Year with a party for all our lesbian readers to come and dance away the winter blues. DJs Kate and Sue will be playing a range of favourite dance and disco music and between 9pm and 10pm Adri, our very own Colombian expert, will be giving a salsa lesson. So if you fancy learning some seriously smooth moves (or in my case discovering yet again that I have two left feet!), be there by 9pm. This year, instead of the Parish hall we’re trying out the Community hall in Pennard village. There’s plenty of safe free parking.
For anyone who hasn’t been before, the Aquarian Party is a friendly, lively event where lesbians of all ages come to dance, meet friends and have a laugh. Dress up, dress down - it’s up to you. It’s going to be a fun, non-stop music night so come along and bring your friends - and your own drinks and nibbles, too. Proceeds will go to support WomenZone.
Getting there: from central Swansea, head along the Oystermouth Road in the direction of Mumbles. At Black Pill traffic lights turn right up Mayals Road. Continue along here for a few miles, going through Kittle and heading for Pennard. When you enter Pennard village you’ll see flashing warning speed signs and a sign for a school. Turn left over the cattle grid into the parking area that serves the school, the library and the community hall. The community hall is on the left where you turned in. See you there!

Places to go, things to do
The Kids are Alright got a thumbs-down from one reader, who contacted us to say: ‘I couldn’t believe you thought it was a good film! What a sell-out...’ She goes on to complain about one dodgy plot development: can’t say what it is in case I spoil it for anyone who hasn’t yet seen it. Generally, more women dislike it than liked it. Sorry if I made it sound like a fabulous film.I was beguiled by Annette Bening. Go, make up your mind and let us know what you think.

The Repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell
The American Senate has finally repealed the anti-gay military policy of DADT. The policy, that prevented homosexuals from serving openly in the military, was voted out by 65 to 31. President Obama signed the repeal into law on December 22. The Bill was repealed after an extensive survey of opinion across all the Armed Forces. The survey revealed that just about everybody was ready for the repeal, except for a few right wing politicians. The repeal has yet to be implemented, but when it is it will bring the American military in line with other Katherine Miller who resigned from nations who have already West Point Military Academy after made the change without coming out, can now re-enlist. issue – nations such as Albania, South Africa, Canada, the UK and Israel. American gay rights activists can now focus their attentions on ENDA (Employment Non-Discrimination Act) and DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) – apparently Americans like four letter acronyms. I prefer TLA’s myself (Three Letter Acronyms)! Alex
New Career Options for those who like uniforms?
There seems to be a new trend among international leaders for female bodyguards. Colonel Gadaffi has an Amazonian Guard of 40 hand-picked, specially trained virgins. If that doesn’t appeal then why not try for the slightly less creepy job of protecting the first female Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff – at her inauguration her 1953 Rolls was flanked by an all female security detail. Psychotherapist to be struck off after trying to ‘convert’ gays?
A psychotherapist who agreed to ‘convert’ a gay man who said he wanted to change his sexuality could be struck off this week. Lesley Pilkington, 60, will appear before a professional conduct panel and faces losing her accreditation with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. She agreed to help Patrick Strudwick become heterosexual without realising he was an undercover journalist and gay rights campaigner who recorded their sessions. Pilkington’s own son is gay and she has expressed her hopes that ‘he will resolve his issues and change.’

Gay couple win B+B victory
The owners of a hotel who refused to allow a gay couple a double room acted unlawfully, a judge has ruled. Peter and Hazelmary Bull, of the Chymorvah Hotel, near Penzance, said as Christians they did not believe unmarried couples should share a room. Martyn Hall and his civil partner Steven Preddy, from Bristol, said the incident in September 2008 was direct discrimination against them. They were awarded £1,800 each in damages at Bristol County Court. Stonewall celebrated the decision as a victory for human rights and warned: ‘Religious freedom shouldn't be used as a cloak for prejudice.’

Not exactly a lesbian film, but one with lesbian overtones, Black Swan has had rave reviews and its star, Natalie Portman, is tipped for an Oscar. It’s a thriller set in the ballet world and it opens in the UK on 21 January.
Jonathan Ross says the right thing (for once)
Apparently Betty Kitten, Jonathan Ross’s daughter, has been out on Twitter for a while. Ross once joked that gay children should be adopted, but when questioned during a radio interview about how he’d feel if one of his daughters brought a girlfriend home he said: ‘Well, my eldest daughter is gay so that’s a question I’ve dealt with on a regular basis already. And providing it’s a nice woman, I’m thrilled.’
Coming out age drops 20 years
The average coming out age has fallen by over 20 years in Britain, according to Stonewall’s latest online poll. The poll, which had 1,536 respondents, found that lesbian, gay and bisexual people aged 60 and over came out at 37 on average. People aged 18 and under are coming out at 15 on average. Ruth Hunt, Stonewall’s Deputy Director of Public Affairs, said: ‘People are coming out younger and younger. Everyone should come out when they feel ready and confident but this is an encouraging trend and sends a positive message to anyone not yet out: you don’t have to wait. Britain is a fairer country than it once was, and support is available to you.’
Christmas Chattery thanks
I missed the Chattery Christmas Cabaret because I had flu, but I want to thank the brave women who got up and performed. Particular thanks to the Queen, who was unable to attend but sent a flunky to deliver her annual speech. Thank you, Ma’m. It sounds as if Michelle and her ukulele (not to mention her very small waistcoat and magnificent bra) made a big impression!
The Christmas cabaret has been running for nearly 10 years now, and it would be great to keep the momentum and excitement going. I know January seems a bit early to start planning the next one, but if we all keep our eyes and ears open for things we could perform, Christmas 2011 could be a riot. A panto has already been mentioned...!
