32 Spring 2014 - Spring 2015 OutReach Directory

June 2014 Welcome to the 2014 OutReach Directory, our 24th edition of this publication. Our Directory provides a lot of information for our community: listings of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) supportive non-profit community groups, advertisements from hundreds of LGBT supportive businesses, and additional governmental and national LGBT group listings. OutReach and our parent organizations The United and Madison Gay & Lesbian Resource Center have served as Madison and south-central Wisconsin’s LGBT Community Center since 1973. After working together for decades, the two groups merged in 1998 and moved to our current location at the Gateway Mall in Madison. This year we are celebrating our 41st Anniversary of service to south central Wisconsin! OutReach’s mission is to “promote equality and quality of life for LGBT people.” Our vision is “to create a community where the presence and contributions of LGBT people are celebrated, where intolerance is challenged and defeated, where justice prevails, and where civil rights of all people are valued and respected.” One of the important services we have provided for decades is the Directory. OutReach Program Services include: • Resource Identification and Referral — We provide a wide array of LGBT print material at our office and community event tables, referrals by phone and in person, cyber-center access, websites, social media, and our Center Connection E-Newsletter. • Publications — Our monthly Calendar & Guide and annual Directory as well as other print material. • Peer Counseling — Support by phone or in-person with our front desk volunteer and paid staff. • Social and Support Groups — 27 LGBT social/support groups currently meet at OutReach, including OutReach programs and community groups. • Speaker’s Bureau — Our panels of volunteer speakers travel throughout south-central Wisconsin, speaking to schools, businesses, governmental entities, and civic groups about many aspects of LGBT life, rights, and culture. Our LGBT 101 presentations provide a more formal in-service on LGBT issues for employee and professional associations. For more info: www.lgbtoutreach.org.

• OutThere (18-24 year old) social/support group — This group meets weekly for movies, discussion, field trips, parties, and other social activities. HIV prevention and other health topics are regularly addressed. • LGBT Senior Alliance — A co-operative project with the Madison Senior Center, this program offers the Gay & Gray discussion group, quarterly social events, Share the Care Station, Folk singing group, youth and senior mentoring project, and our LGBT Senior Advocate staff position. • Advocacy — We act as an advocate for many clients that face discrimination. • Earl Greely Memorial Library — We make available to the public one of the largest LGBT libraries in the Midwest with more than 6,000 volumes, including fiction and non-fiction. • This year we will host the OutReach Pride Parade for the first time. The parade will be held Sunday August 10 and will stage in the new Central Park in Madison at 1 pm and step off at 2:00 pm. The parade will march up Williamson Street, Wilson Street, King Street and around the Capitol Square to end with a rally at the top of State Street. Please join us! We are proud to lead an organization that does so much for so many. Last year we served over 3,000 individual clients, and provided more than 24,000 client contacts to these individuals. We encourage you to stop by our center for information, to join a group, or check out a book. Also, please consider making a generous financial contribution or contributing your time and talents as a volunteer for OutReach LGBT Community Center. We hope the OutReach Directory will be a valuable resource for you and your family throughout 2013 and into 2014. Please support the businesses and nonprofit organizations that you find in this book and when you use their services let them know you found them through our publication.

• First Congregational United Church of Christ

In 1992, First Congregational UCC became one of Madison’s 1st faith communities to adopt a formal statement welcoming and affirming ALL people, regardless of sexual orientation: “As a community of God’s children, we, the members of First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, acknowledge our shortcomings and our need to reach out to all who wish to affirm their faith with us in this community of faith and to worship with us as members of this congregation. We acknowledge that the church has often judged and excluded from the community of faith gay, lesbian, and bisexual persons or has been complicit by its silence. We confess the presence of ignorance, fear, and hatred in ourselves, in the church, and in our society and we ask the grace of God to overcome them. We invite and welcome all persons without regard to sexual orientation to join us in our journey of life and faith, and to seek covenant to be responsible to God and to one another.” LGBT people serve in lay leadership positions and on staff. Children of same-gender couples have been baptized into our community of faith. Our church pastors have officiated at same-gender union ceremonies, in our sanctuary and other locations. Straight individuals and couples, including some with small children, have joined First Congregational UCC because of its “Open and Affirming” policy and practices. Rainbow People (our fellowship of LGBT folk and friends) meet monthly, generally the second Sunday of each month after worship. In the past the group has met in members’ homes for meals/discussion, planned and led an annual worship service, participated in WI Capitol Pride Marches, traveled to the NAMES quilt display and participated in AIDS Walk Wisconsin. Upcoming activities are announced in the weekly “Tower” newsletter, in regular Sunday bulletins, and on the web site. 1609 University Ave, Madison WI 53726 email: office@firstcongmadison.org web: www.firstcongmadison.org Phone: 608.233.9751

• LGBT Books to Prisoners

This fiscally sponsored project of OutReach LGBT Community Center sends books and other educational materials, free of charge, to LGBTQ-identified prisoners across the United States. For nearly ten years, we have supported the educational and reading interests of more than 3000 LGBTQ prisoners incarcerated in prisons in every state. We do this because: • We want to acknowledge, and work against, the oppressive functions of the prison system. Our project shifts some control back into prisoners’ hands. • Incarcerated persons have little access to reading material, and LGBTQ identified prisoners have a particularly hard time finding resources that meet their needs and wants. We are in a position to gather and distribute these resources. • We believe that our work affirms the dignity of all individuals by providing access to knowledge of their choosing, so that they can learn and grow as they desire. We respond to prisoners’ requests as directly as possible. • LGBTQ people behind bars face many hardships, including — but not limited to — isolation and physical violence. We want them to know that they have a supportive community on the outside that cares about their wellbeing. c/o OutReach, 600 Williamson St, Ste P-1, Madison WI 53703 email: lgbtbookstoprisoners@gmail.com (Irene Toro Martinez or Melissa Charenko) web: www.lgbtbookstoprisoners.org

521 is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing resources and support to Wisconisn residents who identify as bisexual, pansexual, or otherwise non-monosexual. We work to challenge bisexual and pansexual erasure, ensure that established organizations make good on claims of bisexual and pansexual inclusion, and build a visible, vibrant community to comabt the lack of social support, role models, and group identity that many bisexuals and pansexual people face. Many bisexual and pansexual people feel unheard in spaces that supposedly welcome the broad LGBTQ community. Wisconsin 521 is working to bridge that gap by creating bisexual and pansexual-specific resources for larger organizations that want to serve the entire LGBTQ community, as well as by providing a clear community presence for bisexual and pansexual people who want to get involved and build non-monosexual community. email: http://wi521.org/?page_id=17 web: www.wi521.org

National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Organizations Center Link CenterLink is the national association of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community centers. It was founded in 1994 as a member-based coalition to support the development of strong, sustainable LGBT community centers. The organization has played an important role in supporting the growth of LGBT centers across the country and addressing the challenges they face, by helping them to improve their organizational and service delivery capacity and increase access to public resources. Based in Fort Lauderdale, FL, CenterLink works with other national organizations to advance the rights of LGBT individuals and to provide LGBT community centers with information and analysis of key issues. Serving over 200 LGBT community centers across the country in 46 states and the District of Columbia, as well as centers in Canada, Israel, Mexico, China and Peru, CenterLink assists newly forming community centers and helps strengthen existing LGBT centers, through networking opportunities for center leaders, peer-based technical assistance and training, and a variety of capacity building services. Our efforts are based on the belief that LGBT community centers are primary change agents in the national movement working toward the liberation and empowerment of LGBT people. Serving over 600,000 people, they are the heart and soul of the LGBT movement and are vital to our current well-being and dreams for the future. Whether they provide direct services, educate the public or organize for social change, community centers work more closely with their LGBT constituency and engage more community leaders and decision-makers than any other LGBT network in the country. email: CenterLink@lgbtcenters.org web: www.lgbtcenters.org P.O.
