The Alkmaarse Groothandels Unie was founded in 1966, following a merger between three bicycle wholesalers. The company’s tremendous success and international breakthrough followed ten years later. In 1976, the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management launched a competition to design the best rain suit. Out of the large number of entries, many from the fashion world, AGU was chosen as the winner. The iconic rain suit went on to dominate the street scene on rainy days and more than a million were sold throughout Europe – an extraordinary boost for the company. In 1980, at the special request of a group of nurses from the Gooi region in the Netherlands, AGU developed a raincoat suitable for cycling. The coat for skirt-wearing cyclists was a roaring success. A few years later, the unisex Trench Coat with the same tried-and-tested extendable skirt system was launched. In recent years, the market has changed dramatically and we have changed with it. This contains marrying our outstanding quality with a contemporary and original look. In this way, we have been able to produce multifunctional items. LAYERS Our rain clothing is made up of several layers. We offer items in 2, 2.5 and 3-layer material, each with its own benefits and applications. The 2-layer material is the most economical option and is also lightweight. The waterproof coating is fixed to the inside of the material in such a way that it feels like one single layer of fabric. To protect the coating, items made of 2-layer material with a membrane are usually given a lining. The 2.5-layer material has an additional protective layer on the inside, which makes a lining unnecessary. This makes it the best option if a lightweight garment is desired. However, a 2.5-layer item is still more sensitive to the effects of sweat, sun cream and mosquito repellent. The 3-layer material is composed of a sturdy outer layer, a breathable, waterproof membrane, and a lining that is soft to the touch. Because the membrane is pressed firmly between the lining and the outer layer, this feels like a single layer of fabric. This construction provides the most durable and breathable solution, suitable for nearly all conditions.
