The interview style allows for an intimate tone and deep character understanding as a vibrant cast of witty, humorous characters narrate a band’s rise to fame and allow readers to see events from multiple perspectives.

The Dutch House

by Ann Patchett Reviewed by Chris Wiegard Bestselling literary author Patchett is back with a tale that resembles a modern-day spin on Charles Dickens. A brother and sister of a wealthy Pennsylvania family lose both their parents and have to make their way in the world together in the mid to late 20th century. As always, Patchett shines, with emotion hiding beneath the keenly-observed surface of character and dialogue.

Midnight Riot by Ben Aaronovich Reviewed by Anne Rappe-Epperson Probationary Constable Peter Grant longs to be a detective but seems destined to push paperwork until he gets a tip about a murder—from a ghost. In this fast-paced novel, Grant grows from bumbling probationary constable to magicwielding policeman. Grant’s reactions to learning magic are realistic and witty. This the first book in the Rivers of London series; the rights were recently auctioned for a TV series.

HOPEWELL LIBRARY Tuesdays, from 10:30–11:30 am This full-body workout is designed to be done from both a seated chair and a standing position. The class will emphasize exercises to improve flexibility, muscle and bone strength, circulation, and balance. It is fun, easy, and suitable for people of all fitness abilities.

Tai Chi for Health

HOPEWELL LIBRARY Wednesdays, from 12:30–1:30 pm beginning September 11 Improve your health with Tai Chi, a low-impact, slow-motion program that addresses muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and conditioning that is endorsed by the CDC. This exercise method has been practiced for centuries. As an introductory course, it is suitable for most people.

Yoga for Beginners PRINCE GEORGE LIBRARY Thursdays, from 12–1 pm

Receive the abundant benefits of yoga. This gentle class offers flowing movements at a gentle pace with attention to breathing and postures. You will see improvement in muscle strength, circulation, flexibility, and balance.

It is suitable to people of all fitness levels.

Working Out for Arthritis HOPEWELL LIBRARY Wednesday, from 10:30–11:30 am September 11–October 16

This class was designed by the Arthritis Foundation and is geared for people with all forms of arthritis. It will include gentle stretching and movement of all joints, ligaments, and tendons. Even a person who has not exercised in years will be able to participate. This class, conducted in both sitting and standing positions, will improve balance, increase lower body strength to prevent falls, improve upper body strength, and aid in normal daily activities.

Attracting Birds with Water HOPEWELL LIBRARY Thursday, September 12 at 10:30 am Bob Schamerhorn will provide a program with informative stories, award-winning photography, bird songs, and video clips. He will also discuss how a little water can greatly improve both your backyard garden and your enjoyment of nature.

Invest In Yourself: Financial Wellness Series Credit, Scams & Identity Theft

HOPEWELL LIBRARY Wednesday September 4, from 5–8 pm & Saturday September 28, from 10:30 am–12:30 pm Register online at the Library’s Facebook Page Begin by learning how to understand and read a credit report; how to dispute inaccuracies; how a healthy credit report is important in finding, sustaining and maintaining affordable housing and in meeting other credit needs. The second half will focus on awareness of current scams; how to protect against identity theft; indicators of scams and identity theft; how a victim of a scam or identity theft can move forward towards recovery; how being a victim of a scam or identity theft can impact an individual’s ability to secure, afford and sustain housing. Profiles of Honor WWI and WWII Scanning Program

HOPEWELL LIBRARY Tuesday, November 12, from 9 am–3 pm The Hopewell Library will host a scanning program with the Virginia WWI and WWII Commemoration Commission and the Library of Virginia. Project: Document Digitization and Access Profiles of Honor Scanning Program focuses on manuscript materials that reflect social, political, military, business, and religious life in Virginia during the periods of the World Wars. Many original manuscripts concerning the World Wars are still held and maintained in private collections. By scanning these items and providing online access, the Profiles of Honor Project will allow individuals to retain their original items, yet preserve the intellectual and historical content of these valuable documents.

MAX

Max was adopted from the Dinwiddie Animal Shelter in 2017, by Christy, one of our great library assistants at McKenney. Dinwiddie Animal Control found Max abandoned on the streets, and even though Christy went in to adopt a cat, Max won her and her husband over with his happy-go-lucky personality. As mascot, Max excels at making new friends and supervising storytime. Max loves to read the Andy Carpenter mystery series by Dave Rosenfeld, and the occasional bird identification guide.

Author Meet & Greet with Hope Whitby HOPEWELL LIBRARY Saturday, October 5 at 2 pm Join the Hopewell / Prince George Friends of the Library for their annual fall meeting, presenting author and poet Hope Whitby.

Growing up in rural, southern Virginia, Hope Whitby planted marigolds in the garden with her mother, canoed the Nottoway River with her father, and waited for the bookmobile on the porch with her sisters Vicky and Kelly. Her debut poetry collection captures with great intimacy and warmth a girlhood immersed in the natural world, and a poet’s coming of age. Traveling the River is a book about strong roots, new beginnings, and the timeless redemptive power of art and nature.

“Give my words seed,” Whitby writes, “and they will take root.”
