A02 Interim Submission – Built Detail Option By Lachlan Hine #640990 Within the Murcutt Guest Studio there are many different structural elements. As such I think that it will be best to just focus on the most important examples. The roof of the Guest Studio has a few different elements across its different parts, notably a: -‐ Cantilevered roof -‐ Skillion roof -‐ Pitched roof And a -‐ Flat roof Within the walls of the Guest Studio, there are many noggins being used. I found these interesting, as previous to this moment I had never heard of them. Noggins are the horizontal members which stop the studs from buckling under the weight of the roof above it; a sample sketch which I attempted to draw can be seen to the right. I feel that the other important structural element to the Guest Studio is the floor joists and the bearers located on the base posts. Whilst the joists would not normally be that spectacular, as this is a renovation/remodeling of an existing shack there was already some wooden base posts in existence, which Murcutt then had to incorporate into his design. Materials: There are many materials which be utilised when making the section of the Guest Studio. Materials that will be used include: Steel
Glass
Timber Noggins Rafters Downpipe Bolts Roof sheets
Pipes Studs Battens Aluminium Insect Mesh Insulation Plasterboard/Villaboard
Zincalume (A mixture of zinc and aluminium) Bolts Bracing Box Gutter Cladding Timber window frame RWH
Construction: Although we have not started construction on the built section yet, in our second workshop this week we began to draw the section on a large cutout of wood, which can be seen over the page. This involved using pencils and a scale ruler to draw a one-‐to-‐one outline of the various parts of the section.

From this exercise we were able to begin to understand how the section would look, and how different parts connected together.
Aesthetic Design:
As mentioned previously, there was an already existing shack where the Guest Studio was built, which had to be incorporated into the current design by Mr Murcutt. In his design, Murcutt decided to focus mainly on the simple, natural elements within the nearby landscape of the farm when designing his studio. As such, he incorporated large amounts of wood into the design, as can be seen over the page. Because of this, the design does not really impede on the landscape at all, instead kind of blending into the background.

Function:
As the name suggests, the Murcutt Guest Studio is a free-‐standing guestroom on Glen Murcutt’s rural property in Kempsey, Northern NSW. Naturally, its primary function is to house any guests which Mr Murcutt may have over, and who cannot fit inside the main house comfortably.
