GARRY BARKER

BOARD 1 OF 7 CONCEPT

DESIGN DIRECTION

A modular set of promotional publications and exhibition materials that celebrate the work of Leeds-based artist Garry Barker. The package functions as a showcase of work, exhibition marketing and artist self-promotion; all under the unique Garry Barker identities.

The focus dictates a coherent visual style across a breadth of materials. The identity is set in Monotype Griffo Classico; a typeface selected to reflect the hand-crafted elements of the artist’s practice. This concept is extended to the use of a rectangle in the identity that pays reference to etching plates used in Garry’s practice. The overall design of the printed materials is minimal with text pushed to the extremities of margins. This allows the artists work to take prominence in the visual hierarchy.

TONE The resolution to this brief is conceptually aware. There’s a focus toward modular and interchangeable elements of the deliverables. Production and materials are aimed at low budget resolutions as requested by the client.

BOARD 2 OF 7 IDENTITIES As discussed, the Garry Barker identities are set in Monotype Griffo Classico; a typeface selected to reflect the hand-crafted elements of the artist’s practice. The use of a rectangle in the identity aims to pay reference to etching plates used in Garry’s work and is an aspect that is additionally pushed across the formats of multiple deliverables within the series. The choice to pursue both solid and outlined logotypes is contextually relevant when image needs to be more prominent in the overall design hierarchy.

BOARD 3 OF 7 S TAT I O N E R Y At their most fundamental level, the Garry Barker identities have been applied across a broad range of personal stationery intended for promotional / daily use. Of particular importance is the selection of paper stocks that are all 100% recycled and eco-friendly. This is enhanced by the earthy tones in the colour palette. Furthermore, the Garry Barker business card format is unique in the sense that it is directly referenced from the ratio of the logotype rectangle.

BOARD 4 OF 7 MODULAR PROMOTIONAL FOLDER With a view to a modular set of deliverables, the promotional folder is the one consistent element that may house a multitude of items in varying combinations dependant on the intended recipient. The folder itself is made from 100% recycled 400gsm Cairne Greyboard, as are the Garry Barker business cards mentioned previously. The heavy stock of the folder has been specially selected in order to withstand rough handling through the post on occasions where promotional packs may be delivered or otherwise transported.

BOARD 5 OF 7 MODULAR BOOK JACKETS FOR EXHIBITION GUIDES Continuing to refer to the notion of modular deliverables, specialised book jackets have been designed in order to wrap around a standardised exhibition catalogue. The reasons behind this are largely due to finance and the environment, particularly in the way that catalogues often have longevity after the event at which they have been distributed. Through using modular jackets, the throw away materials are of a lesser volume, which is both better for the environment and therefore cheaper to reproduce when needed for the next exhibition.

The bind is a Japanese stitch aimed to enhance the luxury of such an item amidst low-fi print deliverables. Inside pages are removable through perforation. *Website live as of September, 2011.

BOARD 7 OF 7 PROMOTIONAL POSTER / NEWSLETTER Available to be mailed out separately or contained within promotional packs, monthly Garry Barker newsletters keep the local community updated on the happenings of the artist’s practice. Doubling up as a promotional poster, this format again refers to the ratio of the Garry Barker identities and is aimed to raise awareness of upcoming events and exhibitions, and to promote for sale items such as the limited edition print booklet. Newsletter is again printed on 100% recycled paper.
