Red Friday is a tradition unlike any other as it brings the Chiefs and the Kansas City community together, serving as the kickoff to the new football season every year. This year commemorates the 22nd year celebrating the start of the NFL season with a city-wide, community-centered celebration. We have yet to find a team-community relationship that is as longstanding as Red Friday. Red Friday is another example of the tremendous support that Chiefs fans have provided throughout the five-plus decades that the organization has spent in Kansas City. Ever since Lamar Hunt moved his football franchise to Kansas City, he knew there was something special about the city, but more importantly, the fans. He envisioned the whole town painted red in support of the Chiefs. That vision comes true every Red Friday. Red Friday is a chance to rally around the Chiefs, but this is also a time for the entire community to make a difference in the lives of local citizens. o For the second year in a row, proceeds from the Red Friday celebration will benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City. o

On any given night, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City serves 67 families. Last year alone, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City provided lodging to more than 5,000 families. Instead of traditional magazines and newspapers, Red Friday sales this year will feature a “This is Chiefs Kingdom” flag for Chiefs fans to show their team pride. Suggested donation of $4 to acquire your Chiefs Kingdom flag.

Red Friday continues a long-standing tradition started by Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt and a group of volunteers more than two decades ago as they sold a special-edition newspaper on street corners around the city to build excitement for the start of football season. Today, team executives, staff and hundreds of volunteers, led by the team’s Red Coaters, are out and about the city to sell Red Friday “This is Chiefs Kingdom” flags to drum up excitement for the home opener against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, Sept. 7.
