5 Things I Bet You Didn’t Know About Winchester
Did you know‌.. Did you know that the legend of St Swithun originates in Winchester? According to legend, against St Swithuns wishes, his remains were removed from their final resting place in the grounds of Winchester Cathedral and into the inner sanctum.
After doing such it proceeded to rain for 40 days. Many say it was a sign of his displeasure at his requests not being upheld. Due to this event it is now believed that if it rains on the Saints Day, July 15th then it will rain for the next 39 days as well.
Did you know‌. Did you know Winchester College is believed to be the oldest, continuously functioning school in the UK? It is made up of 9 Grade I listed buildings, four Grade II* and 80 Grade II.
Other building have of course been added over the years but that is still an impressive number.
Did you know…. Did you know John Keats wrote his ‘Ode To Autumn’ during a stay in the city. In 1819 Keats visited Winchester and is said to have taken much of the inspiration for his ode from his daily walks past the cathedral and the college.
