King Yin Lei Project - Revitalization of Historic Mansion
Year : 2023 - 2024
Architect : IAL
Location: 45 Stubbs Road, Mid-Levels, Hong Kong
Advisor: Mr. Ivan Ho & Ms. Donna
King Yin Lei (景賢里) Project is a revitalization project in Hong Kong.
For the project, my responsibility is to help to complete the design stage and work stage of the project, For example, New Annex, Tea house.
Also, Statutory submission such as FSD, BD, tendering submissions are needed.
Moreover, communication with sub-consultants is needed. (e.g. CHO, AMO, BD, FSD, DSD, WSD, Landscape, E&M, Environments, Engineer, clients, ArchSD, QS...etc.)
King Yin Lei is a rare example of Chinese Renaissance architecture, blending outstanding Chinese and Western architectural features. This unique style makes it an exceptional architectural masterpiece in Hong Kong. Originally named “Hei Lo,” it was built around 1937, with its first owner being Mrs. Shum Li Po-lin. The mansion, designed by architectural firm Palmer & Turner, holds significant historical importance in Hong Kong. It reflects the rising status and wealth of the Chinese community and the development of high-end residential areas on the island’s hillsides. On January 25, 2008, the Hong Kong government declared it a statutory monument. The revitalization project of this building requires advanced technologies such as Point Cloud, BIM, and drone site supervision.
Kennedy Town Project - Salt Water Pumping Station
Year : 2023 - 2024
Architect : IAL
Location: Sai Ning Street, Hong Kong
Advisor: Mr. Ivan Ho & Ms. Donna
Kennedy Town Project is a Salt Water Pumping Station project in Hong Kong, my responsibility is to help to complete the design and work stage of the project. For example, Schematic design, BIM coordination.
Also, communication with Sub-consultants is needed. (e.g. WSD, DSD, TD, HAD, HC, Landscape, Engineers, E&M, LCSD, HKE, DSD, BD...etc.)
The Project is related to different sectors (e.g. HAD, WSD, LCSD, TD, HKE). Checking the Lease plan (OZP) and coordination to clarify the responbility is the key to manage the project. Also, Lesuring space for the people to fulfil the future grown of the population in 2030.
LINKAGE SYSTEM AND INFLATABLE STRUCTURE ALONG ARGYLE STREET
Walk-up Store 2.0
The project aims to investigate the alternative model in urban renewal. Likes my topic, community trust or different sectors' involvement in urban planning instead of just commercial developers.
Marginal Culture - Walk-up Stores
Walk-up stores mainly sell unique, artisan or
Pop-up Market. There are different handmade products on sale in there (Mini Bus signboard, DIY clothing, forbidden books).
Second choice of leisuring spaces
Hong Kong is facing a land shortage, retail rents in Hong Kong keep rising. Walk-up stores is potential for people find a place to gather with others. Walk-up stores provides different leisuring services for the public. Such as, Reading, Cat Cafe or boardgame area. Citizens would walk up to take a rest in there. That walk up experience is common for local youth people and retailers.
Playful Square
This section is located near to the Tung Choi Street, one of the concern the the linkage is to make consideration of the ground activities as there are Tung Choi Street Market. Therefore, the structure of the footbridge would be extended to the ground level welcoming to the street market and activities.
Also, the middle part of the space is opened to public and the spiral slide design create different possibilities of the playful experiences for the users. That public spaces would be managed by shakeholders of Mong Kong crowdfund or MTR as it would also connect to the MTR stations.
Walk-up Linkage
This section is located near to the Sai Yeung Choi Street. The feature of that street is there are lots of walk-up restuarants and game rooms in the street. The extension of the linkage is to give extension of informal activities to the stores. Especially for those stores owners who are welcome to the travelers and public.
This section is located near to the Sneaker street, the inflatable structural and tunnel modules are attached to the black facades of the building. Therefore, the urban gaps like black alley or rooftop area would be utilized. For the inflatable, some would be extended from walk-up stores’ activities from indoor to outdoor. Fro example, reading area from outside. Also, some bubble would be attached on top of the building roof. The shape of the inflatable structure is following the street cultures, the urban void and the function. This lot is located next to the sneakers street and the stores are sport swears.

Plugin Modules
Coliving
This proposal seeks to create affordable houses for the residents as Hong Kong housing prices is relatively high in the world. By using megastructure design(Framework, core, modules), the structure of steel framework would be expanded or grown by times, needs, services, requirement. Therefore, It gives a flexibility for the public to use the plugin services.
For the tectonic, this project aims to explore how the tectonic design( megastructure) form a new living spaces and try to examine various tectonic design for different functions(by expansion or subtraction). Such as, circulation, platform, water recycling, single units, family units.
|Non-permanent Structure|
The plugin services were non-permanent structure because functions can be determined by needs and requirement. The structure can be expanded or substracted to different form of frames to suit with different services. For example, Water Recycling for potable water or non-potable water. The process of filtration is different and the tectonic can help to change the form of the framework. It gives a high flexibility for the plugin system.
|Structure concept|
There are normally 3 main structural components in the design. Those are core, framework and modules. For the core, it is the fundamental structure to determine the vertical circulation and density. For the framework, the framework is made by steels beams and columns. It would attach to the cores and give support to the “plug in” services. The spaces would be determined by frameworks. For the modules, building elements or service that plugs into the framework to form a space. Therefore, core, framework and modules are major elements for the tectonic design.
Transmutation
Year : 2019 - 2020
Location: Mong Kok, Hong Kong
Advisor: Prof. Virginia Fung
This project aims to explore the new mode of living & working conditions for residents in a community to improve the quality of life for those who live in traditional subdivided units (e.g. tenement house/ industrial buildings). For past, people just live in a share house/ working area to do their own jobs, sometime they may collaborate with others, but it is normally restricted in living/ working area. As the old style of living and working is separated clearly and some of the hongkongers like to have more work life balance nowadays. Therefore, the old style of living may not be suitable for cuurent people. That project can be acted as a experimental place to explore whether the new mode of living/ working condition can suit to people of modern age with their pace of life. For the new mode of living/ working, it is designed to challenge the coexistence between working & living environment in my building. It serves as a platform for the residents to enjoy the mixed program of coworking-living/ coliving-working. (I.e. work-life balance more than just working/ living.)
Layout Plan|
Seperation of Functional Units:
There are different social area in the landscape area for activities. Also, Working Spaces are placed besides Lobby area for public uses. It is more convenient for creators to work in ground level because they need not to go up to units area. |Typical Floor Plan (Level 16)|
For the ground level design, I have divide the space into different parts to have different activities. For example, outdoor dining area and steeping leisure should be put in middle to have a great social activities in that area. For the both side. It is more preferable to make parking area and market area.
For the upper level, it is residential area, there are some skybridge area and void space to encourage the living style of coliving/ coworking.
1.Residents can use the skybridge to have working and leisure activities (e.g. playing area) in 3 levels. It is also encourage the concept of work life balance
Void
This project aims to discover the informal settlement of Library to Kibera children. For this project, sport and Library would be adopted in our design. For the project, the competition is organizated by UN-habitat and improve the living environment for them. Our project is using Sisal Rope on the facade as it related to routine activities for Kibera people. Such as, dancing skirt, Rope Jumping, Football, Sisal Brasket are made of Sial Rope. Also, Kenya in Sisal Rope export is Top 3 in the world. It creates job Opportunies and meaningful for the locals. Also, By using Sisal Rope and creatation of spaces for sport to generate different functional spaces in the Library.
