design universe___ research & inspiration
________________ Nocturnal Souls is a womenswear collection in-
spired by elements often associated with prostitutes such as exposed suspenders, mesh, provoking or vulgar fabrics and leather. The concept behind was to use these elements and create a comfortable yet slightly provocative collection without the feeling of being too sexual or tacky. The print design plays an important aesthetic part a literal section- pictures of prostitutes from different centuries are mixed together in a collage-like style with more coded messages that tell about a woman’s place in life through newspaper ads from mid 20th century. These suggest to buy clothes and underwear that would please your man more or all the different methods to cure depression such as drinking tonic for breakfast! The outcome is variations of print designs that resemble vintage posters and newspapers in black and white and blend together with the texture of chosen materials. To challenge feminity, the garments also take inspiration from menswear - in shape and structure ; and activewear - in details and functionality. Thus, the collection touches the subject of violance which has been a common thing among women sex workers; the most well-known story being Jack the Ripper who specifically chose prostitutes as his victims. The leather glove representing a stranger’s hand can be seen in some of the clothes as part of a design detail or as a detachable accessory. Even though the garments might have a criminal vibe if studied deeper, the clothes are suppose to inspire the wearer to express herself fashionably and add to her wardrobe in a fun and exciting way.
