LIAT CELEBRATES 61 YEARS IN THE CARIBBEAN DEAR LIAT

ANNIVERSARIES

HR NEWS

This October 16th, LIAT celebrates its 61st anniversary of flying the Caribbean skies. Founded in 1956 by Kittian born Sir Frank Delisle, the airline has gone through many phases. LIAT today has an all modern fleet of ATR 42 and ATR 72 aircraft which operates as far north as Puerto Rico and as far South as Guyana. The company in 2017 appointed the first female CEO, Mrs. Julie Reifer Jones. There are also several females in high profile positions including as Captains. The airline now operates to 14 destinations though with the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, there has been a limited commercial schedule to the four affected destinations. LIAT will mark its 61st anniversary with a number of activities over the next three months geared towards highlighting the staff and assisting the Caribbean.

Following the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, LIAT moved to assist several of the affected territories. LIAT was able to assist the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) with putting the first team in Antigua to assist in the assessment of damage on Barbuda. On Sunday 10th September, LIAT did its first assessment flight into Beef Island, Tortola. In addition to relief supplies, the flight also had a team from CDEMA who was there to assess and help in the rebuilding efforts. On September 13th, LIAT did its assessment flight to St. Maarten which saw the team doing a tour of the Princess Juliana International Airport as well as bringing relief supplies to the staff of our ground handling partners. LIAT was back to assisting affected destinations by doing its assessment flight to Dominica on Thursday 21st September. The team led by the CEO, Julie Reifer -Jones visited the Douglas Charles Airport. There was also a visit by Corporate Communications Manager Shavar Maloney to Roseau to assess the situation on the ground. LIAT also did an assessment flight to San Juan where the team met with LIAT staff as well as ground handlers to review the start of flights into that destination. LIAT is proud as a regional carrier to lead the relief efforts to assist our Caribbean brothers and sisters. (See more in the HR news section.)

The largest number of flights were done to the Commonwealth of Dominica. To assist in offsetting the costs, the airline wrote to several corporate entities to appeal for assitance by paying for a flight. Dear LIAT In this issue we share some of the complimentary letters we receive. To all who go above and beyond to represent LIAT we say thank you and let us work to help improve in areas where we can!

Hi Shavar, I was at Douglas Charles for three days last week and I’d like to take this opportunity to let you know how wonderful your staff on the ground there are. They worked tirelessly, professionally, and diligently in extremely difficult conditions, always with a calm and consistent demeanour. I did not once witness any frustration from any of your staff. Their dedication deserves to be recognised.

Even thought you all late all the time for passenger flights, I must applaud your gestures and efforts. Awesome!!!!!! Way to go!! Imogene Howard- Facebook Post Good stuff. Always good to see corporations voluntarily coming out to help those in desperate need. Steve Boodram - Facebook Comment

Above: Some of the received goods in the Hurricane Relief Drive Below: The team sharing lunch at Dominica Airport

The staff of LIAT(1974) Ltd. contributed to its Hurricane Relief Drive which saw the first distribution in the first week of October. The Hurricane Drive was spearheaded by the Human Resource Department. Staff in Antigua were asked to contribute cash or goods to the drive while staff from other stations were asked to contribute cash to create an easier system for distribution. Boxes were created for staff of LIAT as well as ground handling partners in the affected territories of Dominica, Tortola, St. Maarten and Puerto Rico. These were sent on LIAT flights into the affected territories and were well received. The HR Department and the Regional Manager for South, Mr. Oliver Haywood and his team also ensured the teams in affected territories who worked the flights received lunch. See more photos from the Hurricane Relief Drive here https://photos.app.goo.gl/fqCGZnpQo3x5xTz72 Have you nominated a colleague for ERRP?
