Through your FAQ section on the site I have seen that it should be possible to acces some basic information about the statistics of my petition. Your FAQ suggests that if go to http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/api/petitions/40990.json i can get this information, but only if I have 1000 signatures. As this is a new petition I don't have that many signatures at the moment but would like to use the information the JSON that you would supply to advertise the petition. Could you please suggest any other options I have before I get the 1000 signatures required, other than using the master document, which at 20MB is too large to be of use. Thank you. Publicising the petition After creating the petition I really wanted to circulate it. I sent it to many magazines and websites. These are some who have replied and been very helpful. The newspaper The Daily Echo became interested in the petition and decided to run a short piece on it. On the 19th December, I did a short photo-shoot for the article. I also forwarded the petition to everyone in my email address book, made a facebook page and put posters up and distributed flyers to businesses which distribute plastic bags.

Hi Libby Thanks for the email - I will put it on our notice board and suggest you also talk to www.wastewatch.org.uk and www.recyclednow.com and perhaps also see if the students union and alumni folk can help at college? "Friends of the Earth Information Team" <isu@foe.co.uk> libzrussell@hotmail.com 11/14/2012 12:24:11 PM RE: feedback comment: Other - libzrussell@hotmail.com

Dear Liz Thank you for your interest in Friends of the Earth. We are a relatively small organisation and unfortunately we are unable to sign letters of support for campaigns or projects which we do not work specifically work on. The issue of carrier bags, particularly by supermarkets, is without doubt a big problem, as is over packaging. However, it is far from the only environmental abuse or even the worst in terms of overall impact. Tackling the problem of plastic bags would only make a tiny difference in tackling the UK’s waste crisis. Other measures are needed to reduce waste and increase re-use and recycling. Attempting to win far-reaching reductions in waste, let alone waste going to landfill and incineration is Friends of the Earth's priority. Rather than campaign to reform specific aspects of individual companies' behaviour, Friends of the Earth is campaigning for corporate accountability through wide-ranging legislation. This would directly hit the refusal of suppliers and retailers to address packaging issues, among many others. However a number of our local groups have campaigned on the issue and may be able to help. Your nearest local group is http://www.foe.co.uk/groups/southamptoneastleigh/

I was asked by Transition Southampton to write a short article about the petition for them to post on their website.

Single Use Plastic Bag Charge in England We don’t see many landfill sites around but they are there, and if we did we would see many plastic bags, perhaps the ones you threw away 5 years ago. Plastic bags do not break down as quickly as you might hope, in fact evidence shows that they just repeatedly break into smaller pieces. Supermarkets in Britain gave out 8 billion single use plastic carrier bags last year - this is including a 22% drop in Wales (due to their charge on plastic bags) but a 7.5% rise in England. Plastic bags are not a sustainable option given that they take so long to break down, killing marine animals and littering our country in the meantime. The energy used to create them is wasted on their 1-3 uses before visiting landfill.

After the plastic bag charge was introduced in Wales, consumer habits have changed drastically resulting in a massive drop in plastic bag usage. A petition has been started which states HM Government should set a fixed price (suggested 5p) on single use plastic bags to encourage people to bring their own bags. The money raised would go to charities. If you wish to see England enjoy a more sustainable culture and environment please go to the link below and sign the petition. Forward it to people that you think would be interested, it needs to have 100,000 signatures in a year to be considered for debate in the House of Commons. http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/40990 You can also like the Facebook page and share it with others: https://www.facebook.com/EnglishPlasticBagTax

Dear Sir/Madam I’m doing BA Fine Art at Solent and my work is based on environmental issues through installation and action. I recently started an online petition to implement a charge on single use carrier bags in England as in Wales, where the amount of plastic bags going to landfill has decreased drastically. This must get 100,000 in a year to be considered. I have made a page for this on Facebook as well as an open event so that people can be invited to it. I also hope to run an event to give out free tote bags in West Quay with the petition card attached to it. It would be wonderful if your staff were already aware of this so that you are actively ensuring that businesses bring products to the consumer ethically and with regard for their impact upon the environment. I would be very grateful if you could present this information, in the form of the attached letter, to your staff, perhaps by leaving it on the wall in the staff room. Many thanks. Yours faithfully Libby Russell

5P CHARGE ON SINGLE USE PLASTIC BAGS I have started a petition to introduce a charge on single use plastic bags in England. Supermarkets gave out 8 billion single use plastic carrier bags in Britain last year this is including a 22% drop in Wales (due to their charge on plastic bags) but a 7.5% rise in England. Plastic bags we use will take many hundreds of years to decompose if it all. In the meantime they will get into the ocean and kill marine animals, sit around at landfill and use unnecessary energy to create. After the plastic bag charge was introduced in Wales, consumer habits have changed drastically resulting in a massive drop in plastic bag usage. For whatever reason, England is far behind the rest of the UK and Europe in implementing legislation for sustainable living. HM Government should set a fixed price on single use plastic bags to encourage people to bring their own bags. Basically, if you would like to see a change in England as in Wales, please go to the link below and sign the petition. Forward it to people that you think would be interested, it needs to have 100,000 signatures in a year to be considered for debate in the House of Commons. http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/40990 You can also like the Facebook page and share it with others:

I shall do this, but who gets the 5p? Could part of it be used as a donation to conservation charities rather than fattening mr tesco's pockets? I have made an page for this on Facebook as well as an open event so that people can be invited to it. I have also put it on all of my noticeboards at uni and taken it to supermarkets and shops to put in their staff rooms. It has an upcoming article in the Daily Echo newspaper in Southampton and Resource magazine have also shared it. I also have an event planned to give out free tote bags in West Quay shopping centre in Southampton with the petition card attached to it, just waiting on funding. This place is the height of consumerism in Southampton so would be a great place to raise awareness. I wondered if you could please make a mention of this anywhere? The signature count has x10 in 4 days and there is a lot of activity on the Facebook event page but it needs to reach 100,000 in a year! I would be very grateful if you could share this in any way possible or even if you could simply put a notice in your staff room about it, it would be greatly appreciated. Tote bag giveaway event To raise awareness of the petition, I planned to run an event to give out free canvas bags in shopping centres during a busy period. These bags would have a business card attached so that people could sign the petition online but this event would mainly be to raise awareness of the subject and encourage people to use more sustainable bags. I went on a hunt to find a way to obtain a supplier of the giveaway bags that would not mean great expense for me. I approached a few select bag manufacturers in the UK and also explored options for funding for this project. I also used the online company Vistaprint to make business cards of the petition to support the event and petition in general.

From Vistaprint for free to support event:

I plan to attach these cards to the bags given out.

Hello, I am running an environmental project with Southampton Solent University through installation and action. I recently started an online petition to implement a charge on single use carrier bags in England as in Wales. This must get 100,000 in a year to be considered. In support of this petition I plan to give out tote bags in West Quay Shopping Centre, attached to them; a business card with a link to the petition (and potentially your business card). I believe that this is the perfect place to do this in the height of Southamptons consumption and therefore the height of single use plastic carrier bag usage. I ask if you would be willing to give me some canvas bags for this project. As I do not have anything to advertise (only the use of reusable bags), you would have free reign to print whatever you like on these bags. This would be a brilliant advertising opportunity for you. Kind Regards Libby Russell

Hi Libby Your idea sounds great - I am going to try and support you as much as I can. The SU does offer funding support for students to trial enterprising ideas or campaigns, however unfortunately we cannot fund projects that are a direct result of a University assignment. The plain reason is that we are not financially able to support every student, therefore we have to put extra curricular criteria in place. I have attached our funding guidelines for you to review and see how we can't fund you. Despite this, there may be other funding options for us. I have just emailed the SU Marketing and Communications Manager to get his quote from our tote bags during Freshers. We may be able to get a discount or get your quote of £1 a bag reduced. What is the total number of bags you are looking for? Secondly - I will email the University and see whether their Environmental Manager can offer any support. They support the SU with green initiatives which may fall outside of our funding restrictions. Thirdly - I will contact the University Employability and Enterprise Team and see whether this can fit with their funding criteria for enterprising ideas. If all the above fail, we can look into some more solutions! Hi Martin A student has been in contact asking for some support with an environmental project she is running across Southampton to encourage a charge on single use carrier bags, ultimately to reduce the environmental impact this has on the environment. She is asking for support from the Students' Union in promoting this project. I think this is a great idea and would love to help her, it clearly fits our objectives with Green Impact and may help add to the overall portfolio of green University projects. Unfortunately, as the project is part of the students course the SU cannot give her any financial support. We can however assist with the promotion of the project and will endeavour to do so. I wondered whether you will be receiving the grant from NUS/Universities Green Impact this year and, if so, whether you thought we could offer any financial support from that pot to the student? Looking forward to your reply. Hi Tom Please see the project idea from a student below. I am still waiting for details of cost, which will depend on how cheaply our marketing team can get tote bags from a supplier. Could you confirm whether the UnLtd part of the 3-tier funding is allowed to cover projects that are part of a university course? Our funding cannot, however I told the student I would try and explore alternative avenues for her. Hi Libby I am actually out of the office, but hopefully below will be a useful summary: - Martin Walton (Uni) was contacted to see whether he could offer financial support from the University Green Impact budget. Unfortunately he is unable to. - Tom Saunders (Uni) was contacted. I believe you have also been in contact with Tom, he may be able to help. If you continue to contact Tom directly he should be able to support you further. - Jamie Ings (SU) may be able to provide you with some quotes for purchasing bags, however these quotes may not be any cheaper than what you have looked at. You might want to get in contact with Kelly Collins, she is the President of the SIFE (Enactus) Society which runs enterprising student projects. She may have some good ideas or the SIFE team may have some other good contacts they could pass on to you. She is a student and contactable on the uni system. Hope that helps! Perhaps left over from freshers fair? Or if you have any ideas where I could get some? Or if there is the possibility of a work related grant? Thank you Libby Russell’ It would be great if I could get funding! I have also been emailed UK based tote bag manufacturers to ask if they would give me a certain amount of bags with their logo on as a kind of free advertisement but not being represented by anything it is like getting blood out of a stone. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. 12_29_2012

I have now applied for funding through the university and am waiting for a response so for now this event is to be continued‌

Tote bag making workshop

After attending a few Transition Southampton meetings I decided to plan a Tote (canvas) bag making workshop. The Arthouse agreed to host the event and I found a website called Morsbags.com who encourages people to spread the word about harmful plastic carrier bags and show you how to make reusable bags with a downloadable document. The next hurdle would be to obtain the materials.

Hi Libby! I was thinking, did you want to run the workshop at the Transition Social perhaps? Otherwise, on a weekend date in December :) Jani ....................... Soonish would be cool although I’m just thinking about what would be needed. Im thinking I could provide one or two irons, scissors, tape measures and stuff so that people can cut up their materials and iron them out. However, I very much doubt I could get hold of more than one sewing machine for people to sew the bags together or even if I could I’m not sure how well people would get on with them ( I myself am god awful with them), I’m thinking it might be best to have someone who would do the stitching on peoples bags when they’re done (do you know anyone who would be interested in helping?) or get people to hand sew them which may take a little while – what do you think? 12_29_2012

As you may know, as a project for my uni work I recently started an online petition to implement a charge on single use carrier bags in England as in Wales. This must get 100,000 in a year to be considered. I have been speaking to Megan from transition Southampton about the carrier bag petition and she suggested we run a tote bag making workshop at the Art House to run alongside this project and ask for donations of old bedsheets and stuff! I think that's an awesome idea! What do you think? I have looked at http://www.morsbags.com/, who are dedicated to a plastic bag free planet and have downloaded their tutorial for making a bag This is the link to the petition - http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/40990 And the Facebook event, if you’d like to share it or know what’s going on with it https://www.facebook.com/events/450048178374965/ 12_29_2012

After putting a request out on Freecycle for bedding/material for the bag making workshop I received several generous piles of duvet covers and pillow cases to use.
