M

emorial Day is upon us, when we pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service. At the heart of the gratitude we demonstrate is the flag of the United States. Each June we observe Flag Day/ Week, a time when we acknowledge and appreciate the very symbol that has carried our nation through two centuries of conflict and growth. The Stars and Stripes is recognized the world over as representing freedom and opportunity. While the specifics offered by those words have transformed over the years, it is amazing how these ideals are still at the forefront of the minds of our country’s citizens. The United States flag embodies the hope and spirit of the men and women who have carried it or otherwise honored it through the ages. Much ceremony exists around our flag. Children recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of each school day. U.S. military units across the globe perform colors each morning at 8:00 a.m., rain or shine, and again each evening at sunset. The ensign is used to render honors to foreign countries, their dignitaries and anniversaries, as well as to honor U.S. national holidays and officials. Flags are draped over caskets and—on Memorial Day—placed at the headstones of deceased Servicemembers and Veterans. There are many ways, with a sample of instances listed above, that one can witness reverence for the national ensign on a daily basis. Simply driving around a local neighborhood will show a host of yards with flagpoles center stage, proudly displaying the occupant’s feelings of patriotism. There are poems and songs that powerfully convey the pride and esteem our national ensign evokes. There are people who present compelling renditions of these poems and songs, each laced with individual experience and deeply felt emotion. When not a dry eye is left in the audience—as is frequently reported by attendees of various events—the universality of the sentiments expressed is undeniable. One such man on The Liberty Coast who is known to inspire a crowd is retired Master Chief Mack Ellis, who you can read more about on page eight. There are movies, books and even official manuals written to standardize the way the national ensign is honored. For instance, you can find instructions on how to fold the flag in the Marine Corps Drill and Ceremonial Manual. Do you know the location of the different parts of the flag, like the header or the fly? If you’re not sure, spend a few moments at FineLineFlag.Com. This site is a user-friendly and informative website that includes a dynamic step-by-step guide to folding the flag, a calendar of federal flag holidays and a clear visual explaining the parts of the American flag. Come June 14—Flag Day—set aside time to read poems, listen to songs, view pictures, or watch videos of events that honor the Stars and Stripes. Ponder the impact this national symbol of freedom and opportunity has had on our nation, and the world. On Base • In Town • Pro-Military Stephanie Thompson U. S. BIRTHDAYS ON THE LIBERTY COAST

By Stephanie Thompson

Of the seven major military installations on The Liberty Coast, Naval Station Mayport is one of the largest—homeport to 22 warships. Join us in wishing three of them and a Navy celebrity “Happy Birthday!” USS Paul Ignatius (DDG 117) celebrates two years, commissioned June 7, 2019

Photo Credit: Petty Officer 2nd Class Nathan Beard

An Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer with a crew of approximately 300, she is named for former World War II Navy Lieutenant Paul Ignatius, who served as Secretary of the Navy under President Lyndon Johnson from 1967 to 1969 .

In May, the IGNATIUS participated in At-Sea Demo/ Formidable Shield 2021, Europe’s biggest and most complex air and missile defense exercise. The exercise demonstrated the unmatched abilities of the NATO Alliance and its resolve to deter aggression. USS Farragut (DDG 99) celebrates 15 years, commissioned June 10, 2006 With her motto of “Prepared for Battle,” the FARRAGUT is also a multi-mission capable Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. She is the fifth Navy ship named for Admiral David Farragut (1801–1870). The FARRAGUT was awarded the Chief of Naval Operations Afloat Safety Award of Excellence for 2019; it was the only DDG selected to receive this award on the entire East Coast! USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) celebrates 20 years, commissioned June 30, 2001 The IWO JIMA is one of the Navy’s Wasp-class large-deck amphibious assault ships that can operate aircraft and debark amphibious surface craft, transporting their embarked Marines and their equipment to the beach.

TWO MORE NAMES

The Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Wall by Reuben Keith Green

A

novelist once wrote that no one is truly dead until their name has been spoken aloud for the last time. If that is true, then one of the best ways to achieve near immortality is to have one’s name carved in stone. Downtown Jacksonville has just such a structure of carvings: the 65-foot long Veterans Memorial Wall. Located adjacent to TIAA Bank Field, the wall contains the names of 1,700 former Servicemembers from Jacksonville and is second in size only to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. Though not all the people featured are battlefield heroes, all answered the call to serve. In May 2021, two names were added. Jason L. Recker proudly served in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserves as a gunners mate and master-at-arms for 24 years. He was nearing the completion of his Masters of Divinity degree when he died suddenly at age 47, leaving behind a grieving wife Melissa, five children and a multitude of family, friends and Shipmates who will forever treasure their memories of him.

When asked what she wanted to share with the world about her husband, Melissa Recker didn’t hesitate, saying, “Jason was known for three things. Number one was his faith in God, two, his service to his country and three, his love for his family.” Posterity will continue to read Recker’s name on the wall, ensuring that he never truly dies. Quentin L. Jones was a 19 year-old private first class culinary specialist serving in the Army in Colorado when he was tragically killed in a traffic accident on 4 June 2020. “Quentin was a perfect gentleman,” shared his grandmother, Ms. Perdita Jones. “He loved to be with his cousins and family.”

Jason L. Recker

Quentin L. Jones

It is said that an Army runs on its stomach, and Private Jones helped ensure that his Soldiers had all the fuel they needed. While both his career and life were cut short, many will long remember the Jacksonville native and First Coast High School 2018 alumnus with the big smile and ambitious future plans. As the story of Jones attests, the length of time one serves matters less than how well one serves. The Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Wall—the brainchild of Mr. Ray Moore— was dedicated in November 1995 and has an inspiring creation story. It is, notably, the only wall that honors Veterans from all six service branches. The next time you’re near the stadium in Downtown Jacksonville, stop at the wall. You’ll recognize some of the names immortalized in books and movies (i.e., We Were Soldiers Once and Young), but others are seldom uttered. Speak each name aloud, with your children. Compel the memory of these men and women to live on in our hearts and minds.

OLD GLORY

“Look up! And see me! I am proud.”

T

One man’s calling to share the history of the nation’s most enduring symbol By Stephanie Thompson

hese two lines are from the poem “My Name is Old Glory” by Howard Schnauber, a WWII and Korean War Veteran who enjoys educating children about our flag.

Did you know there is an entire week each year dedicated to honoring our nation’s flag? Flag Week occurs annually during the week that contains June 14: Flag Day. The design for the nation’s flag has gone through several iterations. The stripes represent the original colonies, while the stars represent each state added to the Union. The colors also have specific meaning: red represents hardiness and valor; white exemplifies purity and innocence; blue speaks for vigilance, perseverance, and justice. The Stars and Stripes is a symbol of freedom, hope and opportunity. Flag week is about recommitting ourselves to the very principles symbolized by our nation’s flag. It is a breath of fresh air to encounter a person whose actions in life are a clear testament to the conviction of freedom, hope and opportunity as represented by Old Glory, our flag. The Liberty Coast is fortunate to have such a man: Retired Master Chief Mack Ellis. Ellis has performed “Old Glory” thousands of times over many years and for a multitude of events, from retirements to funerals, city council meetings to Veteran functions. In fact, he recently graced the crowd with his rendition of “Old Glory” at the annual Vets4Vets gathering in May. It was a beautiful rendering, the gravity in his tone for each word demanding attention. “Our flag displays unity, teamwork, camaraderie, and it’s the day we should reflect on all those that have sacrificed and bring us together,” said Ellis of what Flag Day means to him and how his family honors the occasion. “Be nice and try to unite the country we live in. Sometimes I’m at events, if not, myself and my family have a little cookout and we sit down and talk about family and old times. A reunion. Time to reflect.” There have been several versions of the infamous poem written by former Marine Howard Schnauber, though they tend to follow his words closely. Ellis has even admitted to adjusting the words for his own presentations to be directly relevant to the audience before him, adding references to September 11 and First Responders, for instance, that are not part of the original poem. There are still innumerable people that are not aware of this timeless poem, or of the deep respect felt by those who can recite it. Ellis believes there is great 08 | LibertyLifeMedia.Com | MAY 26, 2021 VOL. 1 / ISSUE 16

I am the flag of the United States of America. My name is Old Glory. I fly atop the world’s tallest buildings. I stand watch in America’s halls of justice. I fly majestically over great institutes of learning. I stand guard with the greatest military power in the world. Look up! And see me! I stand for peace - honor - truth and justice. I stand for freedom I am confident - I am arrogant I am proud. When I am flown with my fellow banners My head is a little higher My colors a little truer. I bow to no one. I am recognized all over the world. I am worshipped - I am saluted - I am respected I am revered - I am loved, and I am feared. I have fought every battle of every war for more than 200 years: Gettysburg, Shilo, Appomatox, San Juan Hill, the trenches of France, the Argonne Forest, Anzio, Rome, the beaches of Normandy, the deserts of Africa, the cane fields of the Philippines, the rice paddies and jungles of Guam, Okinawa, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Guadalcanal New Britain, Peleliu, and many more islands. And a score of places long forgotten by all but those who were with me. I was there. I led my soldiers - I followed them. I watched over them. They loved me. I was on a small hill in Iwo Jima. I was dirty, battle-worn and tired, but my soldiers cheered me, and I was proud. I have been soiled, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of countries I have helped set free. It does not hurt, for I am invincible. I have been soiled, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of my country, and when it is by those with whom I have served in battle - it hurts. But I shall overcome - for I am strong. I have slipped the bonds of Earth and stand watch over the uncharted new frontiers of space from my vantage point on the moon. I have been a silent witness to all of America’s finest hours. But my finest hour comes when I am torn into strips to be used for bandages for my wounded comrades on the field of battle, When I fly at half mast to honor my soldiers, And when I lie in the trembling arms of a grieving mother at the graveside of her fallen son. I am proud. My name is Old Glory. Dear God - Long may I wave.

Veterans Service Organizations

Survey is fielding through June 6! I hope your readers will be a voice for the community and take the survey today.” The annual survey results assist Blue Star Families in partnerships with family champions and generate programs that aid families in acclimating to their new community. This helps families develop a sense of belonging as soon as possible while also introducing the civilian community to their new neighbors. The next three paragraphs offer a small sample of the community and military family engagement Blue Star Families share locally as well as globally.

Helping Military Spouses and Families Thrive By Joe Snowberger

D

o you recall the old saying: “If the Army had wanted you to have a family, it would have issued you one, Soldier!”? Servicemembers with families were rare during eras when the military force was mostly made up of single, young males. Well, times have changed, as today’s U.S. armed forces are very family-oriented. In fact, today there are more family members than actual Servicemembers by a ratio of 1.4 to 1. Recent military personnel demographic studies are uniform in revealing that about 50 percent of Servicemembers are married, and roughly 40 percent have children. It is also well documented that frequent moves and deployments make it challenging for military families to set down roots, make friends, find new employment and take care of their families. Enter Blue Star Families, “the nation’s largest grass-roots military family support organization, with a mission to support military families to improve military readiness,” stated Wendy Layton, the Chapter Director for Blue Star Families in, as she routinely quips, “beautiful Jacksonville, Florida.” To mitigate some of the impacts military life can have on military spouse’s careers, Blue Star Families joins forces with employers who want to connect with the highly-skilled and determined military spouse community. Together they empower military spouses to obtain meaningful career opportunities through resources and partnerships that align with the military lifestyle and open doors to the workforce. This includes access to local or national spotlights, webinars, workshops and virtual introductions. “Blue Star Families is helping Servicemember families overcome the challenges of military life and thrive in their communities as they serve,” shared Layton. “We offer a wide variety of programs that enhance family life, help spouses find jobs, provide caregivers with essential peer support and connect families with their civilian neighbors to build strong communities.” The knowledge of what aspects of military family life Blue Star Families decides to address comes, in large part, from the spouses, family members and Servicemembers themselves. The organization’s nationally recognized annual Military Family Lifestyle Survey gives military, Veteran, National Guard and Reserve families an important voice that informs policymakers and influences its family programs. “It’s survey season” asserts Layton. “The 12th annual Military Family Lifestyle 10 | LibertyLifeMedia.Com | MAY 26, 2021 VOL. 1 / ISSUE 16

BLUE STAR FAMILIES

The START (Serving, Thriving and Reading Together) program is a unique humanities-based and familyfocused program building community among military and civilian families. Six weekly storytelling, reading and discussion sessions featuring awardwinning children’s books are led by professional storytellers and story lovers.

The Liberty Coast has a robust Blue Star Family chapter led by Wendy Layton, whose life has prepared her well for her ability and desire to see military families succeed and thrive. She grew up as a military kid, was an active-duty Navy spouse, an Ombudsman and a Florida Air National Guard spouse. “Today, I’m a Veteran spouse,” said Layton. “I’ve lived and served in our military and Veteran community in Jacksonville for over 25 years. Whether you’re new to living in Duval, Clay, Nassau, or St. Johns, know that I’m here to serve you. Please let me know how I can do exactly that.” As the pandemic restrictions begin to ease this summer, check out Blue Star Families to find the nearest chapter, event or activity. To participate in the Blue Star Families survey, go to BlueStarFam.org/Survey2021/. Liberty Feature

that interruption required a vigorous “adapt and overcome” response. FDR cadet leaders and adult staff channelled cadets to take advantage of training and events that the national organization had quickly moved online. The hard work of FDR’s senior cadets paid off: while many units lost members, FDR gained! The cadets created instructional videos and contests, met by zoom, shared experiences and encouraged one another. They conducted home-proctored physical readiness tests by video and attended “parking lot” movie nights at unit offices. With a partial return to in-person drills in August 2020, FDR was ready to do anything necessary to ensure the safety of participants. Health check protocols, face masks and the fortunate Florida weather enabled the unit to resume solid on-site programming.

NOT EVEN COVID CAN STOP THEM FDR Sea Cadets blossom during pandemic By FDR Sea Cadets Squadron Public Affairs

n 1958, the Navy League of the United States established the Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) to “create a favorable image of the Navy on the part of American youth.”

The first Sea Cadet unit, composed of 78 young men, has since grown to more than 380 units across America enrolling roughly 9,000 young men and women. The Navy League Jacksonville Council sponsors two of these units: The F. D. Roosevelt Sea Cadet Squadron, for youth ages 13 through high school graduation, and Training Ship Roosevelt, for junior cadets (officially called Navy League Cadets) ages 10-13. For both levels NSCC presents a standardized training program designed to: • develop interest and ability in seamanship and seagoing skills; • instill virtues of good citizenship and strong moral principles; • demonstrate the value of an alcohol-free, drug-free and gang-free lifestyle; and • expose cadets to the prestige of public service and a variety of career paths through hands-on training with the United States armed services. In January 2019 things looked bleak for the F. D. Roosevelt Sea Cadets Squadron (FDR). With only 20 cadets enrolled—including those in Training Ship Roosevelt—newly installed Commanding Officer Lt. Bryan Jennings, NSCC faced an uphill struggle. Previous leadership had languished, then abruptly left the unit in the hands of a handful of remaining adult staff. Lt. Jennings challenged the recruiting and enrollment officer—Lt. Margaret Dees, NSCC—to develop a recruiting plan that would provide a road map for future leadership to sustain the unit. Lt. Dees devised an ambitious strategic growth framework with a goal of having 72 cadets in the unit at the end of 2020. By reviewing their best sources, building a website that could effectively process inquiries and encouraging cadet referrals, FDR began to grow and strengthen. In addition to cadet recruitment, FDR brought in engaged, competent and well-trained adult volunteers. Now, with 10 adult staff including retired and former Navy instructors, the unit has substantially improved its leadership and internal controls. By Dec. 31, 2020, amid a global pandemic and restricted to virtual-only drills, FDR Squadron had exceeded its original complement goal by two. Currently, the unit stands at more than 80 cadets and further serves as the “battle buddy” sponsor unit to rebuild the NSCC unit at Naval Station Mayport. FDR Squadron now ranks among the largest Sea Cadet units in the nation. Along Came COVID Remarkably, the unit was able to build through the pandemic. In March 2020, the Sea Cadets national office issued a shutdown order for all units across the globe. For an organization heavily reliant on hands-on experiential learning, 14 | LibertyLifeMedia.Com | MAY 26, 2021 VOL. 1 / ISSUE 16

Drills and Activities Though NAS Jacksonville COVID restrictions limited some normal drill events, FDR was able to keep its troops occupied. Beyond normal drill and classroom activity, cadets built their own obstacle course, participated in the 2020 Jacksonville Veterans Day Parade and tested brains and brawn in an inter-platoon challenge event. The unit particularly benefited from resources provided by parents and partners, including Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program certification conducted by a cadet parent, training in military firearms handling (using its inventory of ceremonial/drill rifles) presented by a retired Navy chief and adult volunteers, and a tour of Coastal Riverine Squadron 10 aboard NAS Jacksonville. This spring, Petty Officer First Class Trey Dubnansky organized and conducted a Career Day drill with guest speakers from all walks of the Navy and Coast Guard discussing the variety of jobs and responsibilities in the services. The afternoon session featured a Blue and Gold officer from the U.S. Naval Academy, Jacksonville University Naval ROTC Executive Officer Cmdr. Erik Bickle and several midshipmen discussing pathways to officer commissioning while earning a college degree. More recently, the entire unit underwent swim quals at the Cecil Field Aquatic Center. On Feb. 21, FDR Squadron held its first-in-a-long-time annual inspection and dining-in at the Florida Yacht Club. Navy League JaxCouncil President Capt. Brad Smith and Vice President, Youth Jodie Marchman, assisted Regional Sea Cadet Director Lt. Cmdr. Robert Long, NSCC in the inspection of the more than 70 cadets in attendance. Several cadets were recognized for outstanding achievement, notably Chief Petty Officer Harrison Youdell and Petty Officer Third Class Nakayla Silvey, who both received the Navy League Youth Medal. Looking Forward Summer brings the end of the drill cycle for FDR Squadron as cadets set out for extended training opportunities around the country. Lt. Jennings and other FDR adult staff have taken a leadership role in planning one of the largest southeastern U.S. Sea Cadet trainings, to be held at Camp Blanding in July; already, more than 200 area cadets have enrolled. Next year projects to be one of continued success for FDR Squadron. With the pandemic subsiding, the unit expects a return to normal activities and further growth. For more information on the Jacksonville Sea Cadets, navigate to FDRSeaCadets.Org or contact FDR Recruiting Officer Lt. Margaret Dees at RO.062FDR@SeaCadets.Org.

n part one (LibertyLifeMedia.Com/Articles/Tailoring-Your-Resume), I shared how a job requisition is created and how corporate and government contractor recruiters and hiring managers work together to identify potential candidates. Part two details how to tailor your résumé to the position description (PD). As mentioned in part one, the PD is written by the hiring manager and the recruiter is searching for a candidate whose résumé matches the PD. The key to writing a tailored résumé is to highlight important terms, phrases, skills and requirements from the PD and modify your résumé bullets accordingly. A typical PD will include basic qualifications, specific skill requirements and preferred requirements. For government contractors, many of the basic qualifications are written in the contract by the customer (i.e. Department of Defense). First are the basic qualifications and you MUST have these. If you don’t, find another position. Examples include level of clearance, education and certification, among others. Most applications will have a final questionnaire based on the basic qualifications. If you are unable to answer yes to all the questions, then you most likely do not meet the basic qualifications and will be passed over. The following is an example excerpt of a specific skill requirement from a PD: “Candidate will have 5 years experience with Earned Value and performance measurement baseline concepts and be able to apply them to multiple contracts for control accounts within an engineering Integrated Product Team (IPT).” Translated résumé bullet: “Five years experience on an engineering integrated product team (IPT) utilizing EVM principles for control accounts on multiple government contracts.” It is crucial to match your résumé bullets to the requirements highlighted in the PD. While reviewing your résumé, a recruiter is looking for the key terms, skills and phrases from the PD. Keep in mind, if you have the same experience in multiple positions, it is acceptable to mention that experience for each position. Finally, it is time to address the preferred requirements. While these are not mandatory, possessing them will make you a stronger candidate. Example preferred requirements include increased years of education, advanced certification, higher level of security clearance and more. Confirm that both basic qualifications and preferred requirements are clearly stated and easy to read on your résumé—potentially in a “Skills Section”—to ensure the recruiter can see them and does not disqualify your application. In closing, recruiters have limited time to read your résumé; they are focused on looking for exactly what is in the PD. The more you tailor your résumé to each application and PD, the better the chances that your résumé will be forwarded by the recruiter to the hiring manager for review and potential interview. Happy Birthday U.S. Army: Born June 14, 1775

New Top War Eagle Leading Patrol Squadron (VP) 16 Commander Timothy Campbell recently relieved Commander Kevin Kraemer to become the 67th commanding officer of the “War Eagles” of Patrol Squadron (VP) 16. The squadron, stationed at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, became the first U.S. Navy squadron to transition from the P-3C Orion to the P-8A Poseidon. The Navy categorizes NAS Jacksonville as a master air and industrial base supporting U.S. and allied forces and specializing in anti-submarine warfare. Kraemer has led VP-16 since May 1, 2020 and has overseen more than 5,000 total flight hours (3,778 on deployment). Under his command, VP-16 earned the “Safety S” and “Battle E” awards. Campbell’s previous operational tours include: VP-9 “Golden Eagles” in Hawaii, USS George Washington (CVN-73) in Yokosuka, Japan and VP-4 “Skinny Dragons” in Washington before taking over as executive officer of VP-16 in April 2020. The War Eagles also welcome Commander Ves Whittemore as the command’s new executive officer.

“Hammer” Hartsell To Lead Florida Department Of Veterans Affairs Retired Marine Corps Major General James S. “Hammer” Hartsell was appointed Executive Director of the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs (FDVA) by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

June 14 is a special day in the United States. It is both Flag Day and the birthday of the U.S. Army, our oldest military service with 246 YEARS OF DEFENDING OUR NATION. The Army’s official motto, adopted during the American Revolution in 1778, is “This We’ll Defend,” and can be seen on the U.S. Army flag and emblem. Regionally, U.S. Army units and Soldiers can be found at the Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville Recruiting Battalion and Blount Island Command in Duval County, Camp Blanding in Clay County and at recruiting offices all across The Liberty Coast. Army Veterans seem to be everywhere. Hooah.

300 “Mad Foxes” Welcome New Commander Navy Commander Ronald Rumfelt was relieved by Commander Frank Sanchez as commanding officer of the “Mad Foxes” of Patrol Squadron (VP) 5 in a recent ceremony at Naval Air Station Jacksonville. Captain Matthew Pottenburgh, commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 11, served as the guest of honor. As reported by the squadron, nearly 300 “Mad Foxes” witnessed Sanchez, originally from New York, become the 71st commanding officer of VP-5. He has been with the squadron since April 2020, serving as executive officer in a common Navy practice of fleeting up the “XO” to “CO.” Rumfelt, a Los Angeles native, joined the Mad Foxes as executive officer in June of 2019 and assumed command of VP-5 in April 2020. Rumfelt successfully led the squadron through a rigorous home cycle and a very successful 7th Fleet deployment.
