Valleys of the Susquehanna Regional Cycling Team Pennsylvania has a new cycling team, named PAValleys, sponsored by the commonwealth’s newly created marketing region, Valleys of the Susquehanna. The team will concentrate mostly on mountain biking in the Mid-Atlantic region while trying to spread the word on recreational opportunities of the central Susquehanna region of the state. The team is comprised of previous members of the now-defunct VisitPA mountain bike team and includes great ambassadors and accomplished athletes from across the state. The PAValleys team will compete in the River Town Series of events, promoted by the Valleys of the Susquehanna. There are 16 events ranging in format from running races to triathlons to bike races. Of those cycling events, the Tour De Tykes and the 75 Miles of Mon-tour will be highlights in their schedule. I CHOSE OPTIMISM There is a tendency in each successive generation to see today’s world as moving away from some imaginary, idyllic past and one step closer to some impending doom. We’re perpetually on our way to ‘hell in a hand basket.’ It’s a pretty bleak, not to mention boring, view of the world. In some ways, the people who decry the state of the world are right. After all, part of the second law of thermodynamics states that “the total entropy of any system cannot decrease other than by increasing the entropy of some other system.” From the first day that man tried to organize his cave, we began moving away from the original state of equilibrium, always gliding towards a greater state of chaos.

Harlan Price, Cycling Editor

That being said, I took this position to try and reduce the chaos of the cycling communities of the Mid-Atlantic and to help bring an awareness of each other and the issues they will be facing in the next few years. More eyes are being trained on cyclists of all disciplines these days, as cycling becomes a more popular sport and as it becomes a part of the green movement. From aggressively texting drivers to entitled cyclists carrying guns, the rate of entropy has the potential to increase exponentially. There are very few bubbles left to live in and the result is we’ll have to come to a group consensus about our own behavior and the rights we expect to retain. Someone is going to be making decisions about what we are allowed to do or not do, so it’s time to make our voices count. Sometimes it’s the voice we use on the streets during moments of conflict that matter as much as in the city council meeting. It’s a Golden Rule message I’m trying to impart here; the world is cracking apart all around, the sky is falling and I just want to ride my bike. Unfortunately my room won’t clean itself and if I don’t do my dishes the rats will do them for me. With all that going on isn’t it more fun to believe the world is evolving into a more exciting and better place, and isn’t our daily duty to help it get there? Harlan Price

TYLER’S JOURNAL By Tyler Wren After seven seasons with Colavita/Sutter Home, 2010 finally brings a change of scenery for me… Well, sort of. The Jamis/Sutter Home Pro Cycling Team will be my home now, though with much of the same riders and staff, it really hasn’t been much of a transition. One notable change with the new squad will be our increasingly international racing focus. Jamis has more global marketing goals than Colavita USA did, so we’ll be broadening the reach of our racing calendar. One of the implications of this change is more time racing in South America, where I can practice my Spanish and prove or disprove much of the ‘Wild West’ racing lore. Having just completed the Tour de San Luis in Argentina, South America’s highest ranked road stage race, I once again witnessed the insanity and sporadic lawlessness or that style of racing. I shared some of my experiences from last year’s edition of this race in this column a year ago (i.e. ESPN helicopter crash, stream crossing in final 2k, hurricane-like wind and rain combined with massive craters in the tarmac), so let me add a few stories of my own from this year’s race and share some of the lore which may or may not be true. Remember that stream crossing in the last 2k that I mentioned last year? This year, without an announcement (so that only the local teams would know), they moved that stream to three hundred meters before the finish line. Fast downhill, slam on breaks, close eyes and ford stream, then sprint for stage win. I saw the usual shenanigans of riders hanging onto team cars on climbs and pacing back from crashes, but nothing else too out of the ordinary, as this is now South America’s premier event, so all were apparently on their best behavior.

As for the lore, teammates have told me that they have witnessed the following at races well below the border. In the final kilometer of the final stage of a race in which the local team had yet to win a stage, course marshals directed the field (off course) as the local team members turned into the finishing straight and went 1-2-3-4-5. Protests ensued, but the race officials upheld the victory. Similarly, in a different race, a local rider was in the breakaway of the day, but it was being reeled in by the field in the last twenty kilometers, destined for failure. My teammate watched in astounded amusement as the race ambulance passed the field, drove up to the break, and motor-paced the breakaway to the finishing line, extending their advantage and allowing them to sprint it out for the win. Most incredible to me is the story of a local rider attempting to compete in the time trial, which was not his strongest event. His friend was to drive the motorcycle a few hundred meters in front of him, standard practice for a time trial at a bigger race. What was not standard was that his friend had affixed a nearly invisible fishing line to the back of that motorcycle and the rider bit onto a piece of cork at the other end of the line to give himself an extra boost. Apparently, it worked too well and his surprising dominating performance raised some eyebrows, but no sanctions were imposed and he kept the win. Not sure which stories to believe, but with races in Uruguay and Mexico on the calendar in the next couple months, I hope to improve my Spanish and to observe, then relate to you any, more adventures. TRAINING

SPINNING THE WHEELS ON INDOOR CYCLING By Bill Hauser

As you may have noticed, the weather in the Philadelphia area this winter has been particularly harsh. Unless you are one of those die hard cyclists who actually seem to take pride in the fact that they bike outdoors in frigid, icy, dark, unappealing conditions, you probably have been doing the bulk, if not all, of your cycling indoors. Many options for riding indoors exist and I am frequently asked which training option is “best” for preparing for the race season. There is no right or wrong answer, as each option has its pros and cons – and each athlete has his or her own training considerations. One option that many cyclists consider is riding at home with their bike set up on an indoor wind, magnetic or fluid resistance trainer which can be purchased at most bike shops for less than $300. The obvious advantages to this option, of course, are convenience and comfort. This option also allows you to completely control your ride. Unlike riding outdoors, you are constantly pedaling (no “coasting” downhill) and, unlike riding in a structured class, you can make sure that you are riding at the appropriate intensity for your own particular training plan. If you are in a base phase of your training which many athletes are during this time of year there is no easier way to make sure that you stay in your aerobic zone than riding at home while watching the latest episode of Lost or 24 or whatever else you have DVR’d and not yet had a chance to catch up on. Similarly, if your training plan calls for intervals or hill workouts, you can select a training DVD (such as the ever-popular Spinervals) that is appropriate for the type of workout you need. The downside to riding at home, aside from the fact that your significant other might not appreciate your bike being a permanent fixture in your family room, is the motivation factor. No matter how many good shows you have DVR’d, and no matter how big your Spinervals library is, riding at home alone can get just plain boring. You may find that the frequency and duration of your workouts start to dwindle over the winter months. This brings us to our next option . . . Coach led cycling classes have become increasingly popular in recent years. This option allows you to bring your own bike to a training center and ride on a trainer in a structured class setting. Depending on the class, the workout may be based on perceived effort, heart rate zones, or wattage. The advantage of this option is that

you generally get quality instruction from a coach and you can enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow riders. Compared to “Spinning” type classes, this option also has the plus of allowing you to train on the same bike (with the same bike computer) that you will be training and racing on “in-season”. On the flip side, riding your own bike means that you have to load up and carry your bike to each class which, at least in my experience, is never a fun project. Also, like any other structured class, the coach led workout may not be appropriate for your particular training plan, so you need to do some research to find out what type of workout is being offered for a particular class. If you are in your base phase, for example, or if you have a 5k run scheduled for the next day, you don’t want to show up unknowingly for a class that has you doing a high resistance, high intensity workout. Finally, spin classes are another option that cyclists are making part of their training routine. Like coach led classes, spin classes offer the advantage of motivation from an instructor and the camaraderie of other riders. These classes also offer the advantage of not having to lug your bike to a training center. The biggest factor to consider when deciding to take a spin class is the instructor. While many instructors these days are knowledgeable, certified instructors and may even have a triathlon or cycling background, others may be essentially “aerobic” instructors who have never ridden a bike outdoors – and who may not know how to properly structure a class. Based on past experiences, some good signs that you have the latter type of instructor are that she has you pedal backwards, puts her foot on your bike wheel for “extra

18 LIBERTY SPORTS MAGAZINE KEEPER 2010 LIBERTYSPORTSMAG.COM

resistance, or has you do yoga moves on the bike. As with other structured classes, you need to make sure that the type of class is suitable for your particular training phase – it may be difficult to stay in your aerobic zone if the rest of the class is hammering out of the saddle to the latest Lady Gaga song. Since you are not riding your own bike, you also need to make sure that you are properly set up on your spin bike. Your key considerations here are the height of your seat, the fore/aft position of your seat and the height of your handlebars. For your first couple of classes, arrive at least five minutes early and seek assistance from your instructor for proper bike set up. Finally, you also need to keep in mind that spin bikes have a weighted flywheel and a fixed gear – to avoid injury, you need to make sure that you never stop abruptly on the bike. Keep in mind that whatever training option you choose, what’s most important is that you are getting on the bike during these colder months and building your fitness for the outdoor season, which is just around the corner. Where is your High School Mountain Bike Team? If you want it, it’s coming . In 2001 Matt Fritzinger, a Berkley California schoolteacher, decided to start a high school mountain bike team. Nine years later that lonely, loosely organized team has transformed into the NorCal High School League with 23 teams and 560 riders. That success has migrated south, creating the SoCal High School League which saw 15 teams and over 100 riders in its first year. In some ways it seems fairly logical that cycling should be considered a high school sport. After all, almost all of us learn to ride a bicycle at some point in our childhood, and usually before the age of ten. That means that far more people have cycling in common than other sports such as tennis, football, wrestling or field hockey. So, why was it that as kids we rode our bikes together to the ball field, but didn’t think to race them around the infield? Let’s blame the disconnect on a culture that sees bikes as a child’s toy, and the lack of adults willing to step in to show how, like a ball, you can play with a bike in more ways than one. Show them how and they will do it better than you. When the NorCal League sent a call out to other states to start their own programs, only one Pennsylvania resident answered. Zach Adams, who was 10 years old the first year of the NorCal League, saw a golden opportunity to learn how to make it happen. Now pushing 20 and in his second year of college, Adams has been running a junior cycling team, coaching and promoting mountain bike races in the Mid-Atlantic for the past four years. Adams came up under the tutelage of local racer, promoter and coach Mike Kuhn, who started the original Pennsylvania High School Mountain Bike League in the middle of the last decade without much success in the face of lackluster interest from the state and other volunteers. Adams now has the force of a proven organization behind him and a formula that should work to get Pennsylvania a league of competitive high school aged athletes. It Should Work, Right? Pennsylvania is a cyclist’s Mecca, right? We have great trails, beautiful roads, international cycling races and cities with incredible riding infrastructures. For that matter, the entire Mid-Atlantic region is a progressive cycling culture. There should be enough enthusiasm and finances to support a high school cycling league. Many cities in the region have trails within their borders or within a half hour drive. By all accounts, Pennsylvania and the surrounding states have all the resources they need. Adams has experience, motivation and great mentors behind him to get the Pennsylvania Scholastic Cycling League off the ground. He also recognizes the need for slow steady growth. “For 2010 I would like to have 30 kids show up to both conferences, getting their feet under them.” The structure and the ground rules for the implementation of a high school cycling league is flexible enough that it seems almost a given that it could

sprout and grow with minimum effort. Take one volunteer, a few kids, a couple days a week of practice and four races in the spring and you have a team. Kids without a high school team or a composite team can ride unattached. The theory is that there are kids out there looking for an alternative to the other highly competitive high school sports. What they need is a leader to introduce them to the world of competitive cycling. “It’s just a matter of waiting for committed parties to come together. I see 2010 as comprised of mostly composite teams and unattached kids racing. I see the school based teams as taking a while to get grounded and to get them to work” says Adams. The key element missing for the league to succeed is a force of volunteers who are willing to sacrifice their own riding time to give back to kids and the sport. The California programs have three full time employees to run the leagues, train the coaches and set a standard for the different programs to follow. Right now Adams is staring at a hundred pound puppy bouncing in his lap with no dog whisperers around. What is there so far? Currently the league has structure and is split into two conferences. The Eastern division stretches from Philadelphia to Allentown and the Central division is bordered by Chambersburg and Harrisburg. Each Conference will have three races on the same weekends. April 17th, 24th and May 1st. Carlisle will host the Central Conference races while the Eastern Conference races will be at Spring Mountain Ski Area. The state championships will be in Marysville, outside of Harrisburg, on May 7th. Adams is looking for committed adults to give some time this spring. If you are interested in the Pennsylvania Scholastic Cycling League, you can find more information at www.pascl.blogspot.com. To learn more about the Norcal and Socal programs to see what is possible visit, www.norcalmtb.com and www.socaldirt.org. So many kids these days are already playing traditional high school sports outside of their school teams due to the level of competition for the varsity and junior varsity squads. It would be a shame if the strong cycling communities of the Mid-Atlantic regions failed to tap into the surplus of young adults to create youth cycling leagues due to a lack of volunteers. If anyone is interested in creating a league in their communities, Zach Adams is ready with all the information you need to get started.

RUNNER’S READING By: Jen A. Miller Looking for a good read while you’re recovering from a long run? Or need an extra gift for the runner in your life? This set of books might hit the spot.

MY LIFE ON THE RUN: THE WIT, WISDOM, AND INSIGHTS OF A ROAD RACING ICON By Bart Yasso with Kathleen Parrish As the Chief Running Officer of Runner’s World, Yasso has gone some interesting places on foot, and My Life on the Run recounts the more far flung and odd. How odd? How about a bare buns run (which is as naked as it sounds), Burro Racing (which involves racing with a donkey-like animal), and the Antarctica Marathon? Yasso mixes in the story of his life along the way, but the racing memories and recounts are what make the book most interesting. Pick this one up if you’d like a lot of humor with your running memoir.

ONCE A RUNNER By John L. Parker. A true running classic, and one finally put into hardback form after years of being passed around from runner to runner on the race circuit. Parker self published this novel in 1978, and sold copies out of the back of his car. In 2007, it was the most sought after out-of-print book in the U.S. Fortunately for the rest of us, it was published by Scribner this year. The story is about Quenton Cassidy, a college runner and his quest for glory in the mile race. While his training methods wouldn’t be recommended today, the book captures what it’s like to be on a running team and to give up just about everything to shave a few seconds off your time.

BORN TO RUN: A HIDDEN TRIBE, SUPERATHLETES, AND THE GREATEST RACE THE WORLD HAS NEVER SEEN By Christopher McDougall. Some have called this a book about barefoot running, but that’s only part of Born to Run. Not only does the book explain why ditching our running shoes could be the best thing we’ve ever done for our running form (and bodies), but McDougall shows why by tracking down a race of Indians for whom running isn’t a chore but a way of life. Wonderfully written and immensely entertaining, Born to Run will have you rethinking everything you think you know about running (though I wouldn’t recommend reading right before a big race – you’ll over think your stride. Save it for the off season or between races).

A RACE LIKE NO OTHER: 26.2 MILES THROUGH THE STREETS OF NEW YORK By Liz Robbins This book is about the history of the New York City Marathon as told through 2007’s race. In A Race Like No Other, Robbins follows a group of runners, mile by mile, through the race – from front of the pack runners to a cancer survivor and recovering alcoholic trying to run their best races. These mixed points of view show how many people run and why, from the elites who started running to Kenyan schools to people who run for the health and fun of it. It also tells how a race through Central Park became a major international event – and why it’s so hard to earn a race bib. L Jen A. Miller is a freelance journalist based in Collingswood, NJ. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Men’s Health, Allure and New Jersey Monthly, among others. She’s author of The Jersey Shore: Atlantic City to Cape May and gunning for a sub 1:50 time for the Philadelphia Half Marathon in November — her first half-marathon so far.

P

olar bear plunges are not the answer for most swimmers and triathletes, so most of us survive winter by just grinding out a few pool yards. Although this summer’s open water and triathlon season may be a distant light at the end of a twenty five meter tunnel, how you spend your winter days circle swimming can make a huge impact on how you feel and perform in this season’s open water events. Experienced swimmers structure their pool workouts around intervals designed to increase speed and conditioning by controlling the rest, distance and intensity of various “sets.” Pool or ocean, swimmers need to apply the same training methods as runners and cyclists to improve performance: Duplicate race situations and stress your body beyond its comfort zone. There is no substitute for spending time in the ocean, lake or bay, but there are methods to simulate the physiological conditions we encounter in the open water.

Once away from the pool, the most common mistake is not applying the pool principals that may have gotten you faster over the winter. While you wait for the roads to be plowed and the pool to re-open, find a way to incorporate some of the following principle into your winter and summer training sessions.

Pool Techniques & Drills for Open Water Success: • Head-Up 50’s – Just what they sound like. Drill: Swim 3 x 50 freestyle and check your times for each swim. Next, swim 3 x 50 and this time lift your head twice on each length to sight on an object at the end of the pool. Check your times and work on improving the quickness and efficiency of sighting those imaginary buoys. • Longer “Broken” Swims – Duplicate the mad rush of the start by doing intervals that take your heart rate up

46 LIBERTY SPORTS MAGAZINE KEEPER 2010 LIBERTYSPORTSMAG.COM

and then force you to relax and find your groove. Drill: Swim 300 meters on an interval that allows twenty seconds of rest after each repeat. Within each 300, swim 50 at 85%, rest ten seconds, 200 at 65%, rest ten seconds, 50 at 85%. Repeat this two or more times as your conditioning improves. • Breath Control Swims – Holding or controlling your breathing during swims extends your ability to overcome the panic driven urge to breathe. When you are diving under waves or miss a couple of breaths in a mass swim start, this tolerance will help you stay calm and focused. Drill: Swim 100 and for the 25’s – (1) breathe every stroke, (2) every third, (3) every fifth and (4) every seventh. Take a long rest interval and repeat based on your level of conditioning.

• Flag Runs – If you want to reinforce when swimming is faster than running, have some fun and build some leg strength add a little running to your swim. Drill: Start in the shallow end with one hand on the wall, RUN to the first flags, push off from the bottom and sprint the rest of a 50.

Open Water Techniques & Drills for Safety and Performance: • Walk the Shore: Walk waist deep into the water and survey the bottom for rocks, sand bars or unstable footing, and make this part of every pre-race or pretraining ritual. While you are checking the bottom watch the water for currents, chop, waves and rips. Learn more about how to read the water by joining an experienced open water group or asking the lifeguards. • In & Outs: From ten yards up the beach run into the water and sprint 50 to 100 yards or just past the surf break. Recover for a minute then sprint back in and up the beach to your starting point. • Tempo Training: Don’t just float around and let every open water session be a social swim. After warming up for a few minutes, begin race pace swims with controlled rest intervals. Drill: Three minutes at an 80% effort followed by one minute at 50%. Repeat the pattern several times based on your level of conditioning.

• No Wall Intervals: Replace the twenty-five meter pool standard with sets based on stroke counts. Drill: 25 strokes at 75%, 25 strokes at 85%, 50 Strokes at 95%. The combinations are as infinite as your pool workouts without the need to learn flip turns. • Time Trial: Find a course that will take fifteen to thirty minutes to swim. “Race” the course and record your time to set an early season benchmark. Repeat the same distance swim over the summer to measure your conditioning and progress. Keep in mind that different water conditions can affect your time, so focus as much on your perceived exertion as you do on the overall time. • Play: Get comfortable in the water. Body surf, paddleboard, play in the waves or just practice putting your head down and looking into the deep. If you spend long enough in the ocean your are going to be bumped by something unexpected, splashed by a dolphin, startled by a plastic bag or stung by a jellyfish. Statistically your bike ride is more dangerous than the chance of a life-threatening encounter in the ocean, so keep in mind that often the scariest things in the open water are the fears we bring with us from the land. Pick a few drills from the list above to work a little variety into your winter lane time and visualize the open water sessions you can have when the snow forecasts become wave reports. Experiment to see what works to keep you motivated, and remember how you feel about the water is as important as a feel for the water.

VALLEY PREFERRED CYCLING CENTER MARKS 35TH ANNIVERSARY By: Joe McDermott The Valley Preferred Cycling Center (VPCC) celebrates its 35th anniversary this year with nine Friday nights of professional, international Olympic-caliber racing highlighted by the return of the U.S. Junior National Championships to the famed Trexlertown track for the time, Executive Director Marty Nothstein announced Thursday. In addition to the World Series of Cycling professional schedule and four days with the best young riders in the country, there will be 17 nights of the 24-7 Fitness Super Tuesday Pro-Am race nights and 16 Masters and Rookies events for a total of 46 race days on the 2010 calendar.

“It’s important that our fans know that, once professional racing begins, it will occur every Friday night for nine weeks, with the exception of our traditional Independence Day break’’ said Nothstein, former Olympic gold and silver medalist in the Sprint competition and a three-time World Champion on the track. “But we also want people to know that racing doesn’t begin and end on Friday nights,” Nothstein continued. “Tuesday nights offer a terrific competitive schedule as the best rising stars in the sport try to earn the right to move up to Elite competition, and our Masters and Rookies series is some of the best entertainment in the sport.” Friday’s calendar will feature the return of classic fan favorites such as the Keirin Cup, the Salamander Madison Cup, Tandemonium and the U.S. Tandem Championships and the Festival of Speed featuring the Artie Greenburg 10-Mile Memorial U.S. Championships. Also returning is the Air Products Finals night and an expanded version of the popular Corporate Challenge, which allows companies and organizations from across the region to put their own employees on the track for an Italian pursuit and a chance to shine under the Friday night lights. Dave Chauner of Pro Cycling Tour, who has produced the Philadephia International Championship for the past 25 years, joined Jack Simes III to open T-town for Rodale in 1975. He said the early promotional tactics paired with great racing put the velodrome on the international map. “When Jack and I were hired by Bob Rodale as the first management team, our philosophy was to promote Trexlertown as if it were Madison Square Garden … play to the

crowd, build personalities, present cycling as entertainment as well as exciting sport,” Chauner said. “We experimented with formats and presentation and created short, fast programs. It worked. Pretty soon, we packed the place every Friday night and Trexlertown arguably became the best outdoor track in the world.” Nothstein said the 35th Anniversary year will renew the VPCC focus on the community programs that have made T-town a powerhouse on international track cycling for more than three decades. A product of the Air Products Cycling Program and Bicycle Racing League, Nothstein said he knows how important these programs are for the development of young talent and the continued strength of track cycling on a national and international scale. Added Nothstein, “We have trained dozens and dozens and dozens of national champions and Olympic competitors right here on my home track and we want to build on that record.”

CHOICE GEAR

Camelbak XLP By Harlan Price

This Camelback XLP is a solid little package with a 72oz bladder that has been surprisingly free of the little quirks that normally annoy me with hydrations packs. When you pick up an empty XLP it’s light in the hands and has a simple and solid feel to it. According to the Camelback literature, the pack weighs just over half a pound when empty. It is small and doesn’t have a lot of room, but on some recent four hour rides I found that I could stash a windbreaker, a small apple, a sandwich bag of granola and a few tools without much problem. The inside pocket holds a Co2 pump, cartridge and a mini tool pretty well, while the expandable outside pocket is the best place for a tube. Don’t expect to load it up for a four hour ride if you like to be prepared for anything, eat a lot and shed lots of clothes. Overall I liked the fit of the pack a lot. I have a relatively small frame at 5’9” and 150lbs, and it fit me really well, sitting high on my back (as designed to allow access to jersey pockets), and almost disappeared from my conscience when riding. When ducking under low branches, it stayed close to the body and didn't hit the low brush like a big pack often does. It is small enough that it fits under my windbreaker on road rides to avoid frozen water bottles in these cold months. The removable waist strap allows the XLP to become even less cluttered for casual riding. Overall I really like this bag and see myself using it on a regular basis in the mountains and on the road. I would love to see Camelback add the hose clip that they sell for $2 as a standard feature. The XLP is a small bag with some versatility and bridges the gap between a small SUV and two-seater sports car. Check out www.camelbak.com for more info.

Princeton Tec: Fuel Headlamp By Bruckner Chase

Simple, lightweight and reliable, the new Fuel by Princeton Tec hits exactly what one needs in a multiuse headlamp. After years of racing and pre-dawn arrivals, a headlamp is now indispensible in my gear bag, but only in recent years have the lamps evolved into something as user friendly as the fuel. Princeton Tec’s headlamp runs on three AAA batteries that hold the fuel to an almost unnoticeable 78g. The brightest setting throws out 43 lumens and two lower settings extend the battery life to almost 146 hours. The four LED light source provides a focused wide beam for everything from night trail runs to pre-event, pre-dawn gear set-ups. With the flash and low beam setting, navigating city streets becomes much safer when broad daylight training is not an option. Specifications and numbers are great, but most noticeable about the Fuel is how the unit feels. The asymmetrical, ratcheted single arm bracket makes directing the light simple and effective when bounding down a trail. The large push button switch on the top of the casing is easy to find and operate, even with gloves. If you find yourself waxing a board for an early morning surf session, the water resistant IPX4 rating means the headlamp can survive a few splashes and being thrown into a bag with your wetsuit. For the fashion minded, the fuel is available in four colors: black, green, olive drab and pink. At $26.99, the fuel is available at local specialty stores as well as online. Not to be missed is the fact that Princeton Tec is local, and based just up the road in Trenton. To learn more about the fuel and all of Princeton Tec’s products go to www.princetontec.com.

TRISWIM: Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash & Lotion By Bruckner Chase The chemicals in pool water are designed to kill, and as my pool time increases my hair and skin are also in a battle for their life. Aside from chemical damage, I don’t like to smell like last night’s swim workout with the first glistening of sweat in the morning’s run. TRISWIM’s family of products not only kill the smell and get rid of the chemicals, they are like a recovery drink for the outside of your body. Lots of swimmer-focused body care products neutralize chlorine odor, but TRISWIM goes further and uses “sequestering agents which assist in attacking the chlorine, grabbing a hold of it, and washing the chemical down the drain.” Best of all, the products follow up by healing your body with organic aloe vera as well as vitamins A, E and provitamin B5. My work lands me all over the country in a wide range of pools. Aside from a little muscle fatigue, I need to leave the pool behind as I go about my day. From Ocean City, to DC, to Long Beach and Irvine, TRISWIM has performed more consistently than I have in some of those venues. As someone who also spends a lot of time in the ocean, I have found that the products help get rid of that post-saltwater dryness and damage. In addition to taking care of your body’s surface, TRISWIM is committed to helping athletes and giving back to the sport. Check out their website for a wealth of information including swim workouts, drills and videos. The company also supports the Challenged Athletes Foundation and the Team Duke – John Wayne Cancer Foundation. Go to www.tri-swim.com to find out more. TRISWIM products are available in 8.8 oz tubes as well as 2 oz bottles for those of you needing to pass through TSA security on the way to the pool. You can find the products online and at local sports specialty shops. Liberty Sports will have more TRISWIM product reviews in upcoming issues and online at www.libertysportsmag.com.

Footprint Bamboo Socks By Kristen Gavin and Matt Reece

Footprint Bamboo Active Wear is a Pennsylvania-based company with high standards. Footprint continues to expand their line of bamboo wear with their new performance socks. Our local friends were nice enough to send us over a sampling of three different pairs of socks, the Anklet Performance Sock ($10.99), Technical Ski/Snowboard Socks ($17.00) and 3/4 Athletic Crew Black Socks ($10.50). The first thing you, and your feet, will notice is how soft these socks are. All three pairs are extremely confortable and have held up to constant wear. The second is their ability, an important factor in performance wear. Not only did our feet not get hotspots while running in the anklet, and remained at a comfortable temperature all day while playing in the snow in the ski/snowboard socks. The socks never got stinky, even after a few days in smelly shoes, and the black crew socks are great for those long office days in non-breathing, but highly fashionable, dress shoes. The reason is the organic bamboo fiber, which is naturally light and airy, hypoallergenic, and antibacterial while remaining machine washable and dryer safe. If you are worried about putting a dent in nature’s bamboo stocks – worry not! Bamboo grows incredibly fast, up to 75 feet in just 45 days, naturally regenerates, and sends out an average of six new shoots per year. Imagine treating your feet with a sock that is soft, silky and odorless all day long! Footprint Bamboo Active Wear offers everything from bed linens to t-shirts to socks - all environmentally friendly, all odor-free, and all supporting local industry. Check out their website www.footprintbamboo.com to locate stores, shop online, and read their full story. It seems is appropriate that their tagline reads, “Leave a good impression…” YOUR LOCAL GUIDE TO CYCLING, RUNNING, SWIMMING & TRI

Adidas miCoach By Brook Gardner

The miCoach Pacer attaches to MP3 armbands or can clip onto a waistband and is roughly the size of a small car alarm remote, weighing next to nothing.

As any running coach will attest, there is no such thing as a "one size fits all" approach to training. Each person has individual needs, which miCoach takes into account while also simplifying heart rate training – a concept that can be difficult to understand for even the most experienced runners.

The key to a successful training campaign, as has been preached by running gurus near and far, is to train smarter. Adidas has created a training platform called miCoach which can help you do just that. Launched in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, miCoach aims to not only help people "begin to run" but also to help more advanced runners take their performances to the next level. miCoach simplifies the concept of heart rate-based training in order to help runners of all abilities train as if they had a personal coach.

miCoach breaks down heart rate training into four specific color-coded zones: Blue ("energy zone" - easy effort); Green ("endurance zone" - medium effort); Yellow ("strength zone" hard effort); and Red ("power zone" - maximum effort). These zones are then integrated into the miCoach devices and web site, which serve to facilitate the individualized training programs. The introductory miCoach device is called the Zone (Retail: $69.99), which is a heart rate monitor strap and wrist-mounted unit. The chest strap sends data to the wrist unit, which contains four differently colored LED lights that correspond to the aforementioned training zones. The user can glance at the Zone unit during a workout and determine if they are exercising at the correct intensity.

Users can customize their workout goals and select their current fitness level before beginning a new program. miCoach then creates an individualized workout plan that is mapped in the calendar interface, which doubles as a training log.

The miCoach Web site is really the cornerstone of this product. Users can select from one of six families of training plans ranging from “learn to run,” which is designed to help someone begin a running program, up to “finish faster,” which was created to help a more advanced runner set a personal best at a certain distance. Each user is asked to set up a free account on the site that will reqeust that they enter their personal physical data (height, weight, etc.) and lets them choose the training program that is right for their running ability. 52 LIBERTY SPORTS MAGAZINE KEEPER 2010 LIBERTYSPORTSMAG.COM

The second device, and the more robust of the two, is called the Pacer ($139.99). The Pacer consists of a heart rate monitor chest strap, the Pacer unit that can be clipped onto an armband or waist, as well as a stride sensor, which can be worn in the footbed of miCoach-compatible adidas shoes, as well as on top of the shoe for interchangeability with other footwear. The Pacer can be worn in tandem with an MP3 player, or the user can wear the unit by itself. There are currently more than 3,000 workouts available through the miCoach Web site, all of which are based on heart rate feedback that is provided in real-time by audible cues (via headphones) that tell the user to slow down or speed up based on the training zone they should be in during that point in the training session. After a workout, the Pacer is synced to the miCoach user profile on the Web site (via downloadable software and a USB cable). Once the information is uploaded, the user can view his/her workout summary that includes distance, calories burned and other relevant workout data, but more importantly, the interface details the amount of time spent in each of the coached heart rate zones and then provides feedback and advice based on the data analyzed from the workout.

Within a specific program there are levels that one can choose based on current fitness levels. For example, if someone wanted to begin to run, they might be asked if they can jog for five minutes without rest. For someone looking to "finish faster" for a half marathon, they might be asked whether they have previously completed the distance in less than two hours, while the next level may be suited to those who have finished in under 1 hour, 45 minutes. This criteria is structured to ascertain information necessary to evaluate the user's current level of fitness as they begin their miCoach training program. The web site also allows for customization of each user's routine and commitment level. Users can select the day of the week they want their training week to begin, which day to do their long run (if training for a longer distance event) and the number of days they can run during the week. Each user is asked to complete an "assessment run" before engaging in the training program, which helps establish heart rate threshold information and other data needed to accurately calibrate the heart rate component of miCoach. There is an algorithm that miCoach uses to set specific heart rate zones without completing the assessment run, but it is recommended that each user complete this task prior to engaging in a training program.

Once a workout is complete, the user is asked to sync the Pacer to their computer (Mac and PC compatible), which then uploads the data from their most current workout to their online miCoach profile. The profile displays the details of each workout including distance covered, calories burned, strides per minute and the percentage of the workout the user spent in the correct heart rate zone as instructed during the course of the workout. Every runner, whether novice or advanced, can benefit from the instruction provided by a coach. But knowing how to train smart and accessibility to a personal coach is not something every runner possesses. Adidas has introduced miCoach in an attempt to break down these barriers and to provide real-time coaching backed up with the scientific data of heart rate-based training. Future updates will add more functionality to the platform, including GPS integration and pace-based training programs. miCoach is available for purchase online at shopadidas.com, as well as through Adidas’ Sport Performance Stores and retailers across the U.S. For mor information check out www.miCoach.com
