ARUBA
DEAR TRAVELER, After the long and cold winter season we have had on the East Coast, I find myself longing for sunshine and time spent outdoors. One of the endless number of benefits that travel can provide includes the ability to connect with nature year-round and experience a destination in all its natural beauty. In this issue of Connect, we curate our recommendations of destinations and resorts that might be flying under the radar of your bucketlist but wow their visitors with spectacular natural beauty.
LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND
ARUBA
It’s not hard to get excited looking at the images of “resorts that bring the outdoors in.” A stay at one of these idyllic hotels and resorts will give you the opportunity to connect to the beauty of the destination without even leaving your resort. Whether it’s breathtaking ocean views, the sounds and sights of the rainforest, or the experience of an overwater bungalow – these are the perfect resorts to get away from it all. But those seeking the best of both worlds will have plenty to discover in the places we selected for our top 10 list of cities surrounded by nature. Lucerne, Switzerland stands out on the list for me, as one of my very first European destinations as a young traveler – and the beauty of its mountains and crystal-clear lakes have long held a special place in my memory. Also featured in this issue is a fun and adventurous 5-day itinerary to Aruba in the southern Caribbean. With picture-perfect weather almost guaranteed, you can spend your entire vacation seeking adventure outdoors or doing almost nothing at all on the world-class white sand beaches. Over to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, Hotel Xcaret is the new kid on the block and is doing things differently. This resort has been designed to capture the most from its natural landscape and is located adjacent to the famous Xcaret Park – where your all-inclusive stay gains you access to it and six other ecological parks along the Riviera Maya.

WHERE IN THE WORLD Are Our Travel Consultants’ Favorite Excursions? NUSA PENIDA, BALI, INDONESIA Michelle Hompesch • Brick, NJ
“
Nusa Penida is a small island off the coast of Bali’s eastern shores. We had seen it all over Instagram (most notably the famous Kelingking Beach) and decided on staying there for two nights at the last minute. I’ve never met such friendly people in my life; everyone was eager to help and went out of their way to make you feel welcome. We chose to explore the island with a private tour (available through Liberty Travel) and had the best day. Our day involved a lot of hiking in some very humid temperatures, so be sure to stay hydrated! I’d recommend this tour for anyone in good physical health visiting Bali, but it’s a bit more difficult with children (limited facilities throughout the island can be difficult). Be sure to bring a swimsuit, flip flops, change of clothes, and a towel. All in all, this tour will leave you breathless – and for more reasons than the climbing!

It has always been a dream of mine to do a shark dive and Hawaii is the perfect place for a beginner. I’ll never forget the moment I stepped down into the cage; the rush of fear, excitement, and awe that came over me! The sharks were so calm, curious, and beautiful and I felt completely safe. I would highly recommend this tour for someone looking for adrenalin and adventure, and for travelers that want to do something out of the norm.

Lauren Allard • Burlington, MA
While in Vancouver before boarding the Rocky Mountaineer towards Banff, I had the chance to enjoy several amazing excursions in and around the city. My favorites included Breakfast with the Bears at Grouse Mountain, Capilano Suspension Bridge, and a Zodiac Boat Tour! The Zodiac tour was both thrilling and informational as we zoomed around the harbor taking in sights like the Lions Gate Bridge and Granville Island. Breakfast with the Bears was a more relaxed experience filled with tasty local bites like candied salmon, and a chance to get up close to their rescued grizzlies, Grinder and Coola! If you’re looking to see some true Pacific Northwest history and beauty, look no further than Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. The views from the bridge were incredible, the First Nation’s history was fascinating, but my favorite part was their Treetops Adventure, a series of small suspension bridges winding high through the towering Douglas Firs for which the area is so famous.

I would recommend the Intrepid Mt. Everest Base Camp Trek for any person with an interest in experiencing a new culture. The physical level is very strenuous and does require a fair amount of training, but the feeling that you get when you reach the base camp of the world’s tallest mountain is unlike any other that you will experience in your life. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone who has ever wanted a grand story to tell. DavidsonA@LibertyTravel.com 856.665.9450

TOP 10 CITIES SURROUNDED BY NATURE 1
WILLEMSTAD, CURAÇAO Rich in architecture and culture, Willemstad—the capital of Curaçao—is a UNESCO World Heritage harbor city. This bustling town is the gateway to 38 beaches in Curaçao, as well as coral reefs teeming with marine life that draws people from all over to snorkel and dive in its waters. The best part? Its stunning, secluded beaches are still considered off-the-radar. Interestingly enough, the majority of the island is actually wild and undeveloped, and lined with desert-like cacti. Rocky terrains and dramatic cliffs? They have that, too. Less than an hour drive from the city is Christoffel Park, the largest national park and wildlife preserve in Curaçao, which is worth checking out.
The best of both worlds…that’s what you get when you visit one of these beautiful cities. Outdoor enthusiasts (and those just in need of a little nature therapy) will love the happy and healthy balance these places provide. Whether located among mountains, beside the sea, or just a hop, skip, and jump away from beaches, lakes, and other natural areas, these are 10 gems you don’t want to miss.

Vancouver Sea to Sky Suspension Bridge
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA Vancouver has acquired quite the reputation these days, in the best way possible. It’s even been called the cool North American sibling. Everywhere you look in this sophisticated city, you’ll see water or mountains…or both. You’ll find ski slopes just 30 minutes from downtown and beaches filled with sunbathers in the summer. Rainforests and gorgeous foliage also make Vancouver one of the most beautiful cities in the world. As you can imagine, outdoor adventures are never too far—whether you want to explore Whistler, the Canadian Rockies, Victoria, or Vancouver Island nearby.

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO Old San Juan will charm you with its cobblestone streets and candy-colored homes, scenic waterfronts, centuries-old forts, historic plazas, tropical beaches, and warm, vibrant culture. But what you might not know is that right outside the city is a whole other world—green and lush with natural treasures waiting to be discovered. Dubbed the Island of Enchantment, it truly lives up to its name with nearly 300 beaches, 14 state forests, including El Yunque rainforest and the Guánica Dry Forest. For an out-of-thisworld adventure, don’t miss the chance to go kayaking over one of Puerto Rico’s three bioluminescent bays.
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH Located on the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Salt Lake City really is nature’s playground to outdoor enthusiasts. So much of the outdoors can be enjoyed right outside the city, from hiking and biking local canyons, horseback riding in lush forests, or taking it all in from a hot-air balloon ride above it all. In the winter, there are all kinds of snow sports that can be enjoyed at nearby ski resorts. You can also go fishing, experience the area’s wildlife, and even do some birdwatching in Salt Lake’s alpine mountains, arid desert, and Great Salt Lake itself.

TUCSON, ARIZONA Feast your eyes on an open sky and mountain ranges at each corner of Tucson…a true beauty in the desert. Here you’ll get to view some of the best sunsets and lush saguaro forests everywhere you look. It’s home to five mountain ranges, so you’ll have your choice of outdoor adventures, like rock climbing and hiking. And you can even explore caves in this region of Southern Arizona.
SINGAPORE In Singapore, you don’t need to leave the city to appreciate nature. According to the Environmental Performance Index, a sustainability study by Yale University and the United Nations, Singapore happens to be the greenest city in Asia. Visitors are often shocked by just how green the island really is despite its high population density. But this is exactly why Singapore is committed to being a green city. Former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew dreamed that it would someday be known as the “City in a Garden.” You’ll notice many green buildings around the city, but one initiative that really stands out is the Gardens by the Bay, which consists of vertical gardens (up to 164 feet high!) that fill its Supertree Grove.

REYKJAVIK, ICELAND Iceland is filled with magical, otherworldly landscapes that’ll make you wonder if you’ve just stepped into a fantasy novel. And the entry to this enthralling country is Reykjavik. Once you arrive there, you can access countless natural wonders like canyons, glaciers, volcanos, lava fields, waterfalls, freshwater springs, dramatic coastlines, black-sand beaches, fjords, and geothermal lagoons. Maybe you’ll see the Northern Lights or go whale watching in this whale-watching capital of Europe. Spy some puffins in the summer. Trek through nature reserves. No matter where you look, there’s something striking to be amazed by here.

LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND Nestled between mountains, the Lake Lucerne region of Switzerland offers plenty of ways to take advantage of its natural landscape. In the winter, you can ski, snowboard, cross-country ski, snowshoe, and more. In the summer, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramas in the mountains. Go for a hike and admire crystal-clear lakes. Ride a bike or try some water sports in the fjord-like inlets and countless natural beaches nearby. The possibilities are endless.
10
AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND It’s no surprise that Auckland has been rated the third most livable city in the world, with its mix of urban adventures and natural wonders. In this metropolis, everything is within a half hour of gorgeous beaches, islands, and hiking trails. Its sunny climate doesn’t hurt either. You can immerse yourself in this stunning natural playground by exploring lush rainforests that plummet downhill to meet the sea on black-sand beaches. Or get lost in nearby vineyards, country gardens, pristine forests, and calm bays. For an amazing view of the city and harbor—or a perfect picnic spot—check out one of Auckland’s 48 volcanic cones.
BARCELONA, SPAIN Barcelona can make for a relaxing nature trip that goes well beyond its famous coastline. While there, you can visit the Serra de Collserola natural park, where you can get some amazing views of the city. This Mediterranean forest offers a great way to explore the local wildlife while you hike its trails and is just a 15-minute ride from Barcelona. And you can’t forget Montserrat. Here, you can see the ancient Benedictine abbey—one of the spiritual centers of the region which has also attracted a Buddhist community. The area’s calm and serene energy alone is worth the trip, not to mention the majestic views that await. Montserrat, Spain

DAY 3
5 Aruba DAYS
Get up early for a day of snorkeling in the waters off Aruba, which is blessed with more sunny days than any other Caribbean island. Hit the surf at Arashi Beach, Malmok Beach, or Boca Catalina, all on the northwestern side of the island. You’ll meet barracuda, spinner dolphins, blue parrotfish, angelfish, and starfish. If you dive at daybreak, you’ll probably spot some turtles too. Just south of Arashi Reef, you'll find the Caribbean's largest shipwreck, the 394-foot German freighter Antilla, sunk during WWII. The wreck is in shallow waters, so snorkelers can peer right into its fractured hull. Break for lunch, Aruba-style, at Charlie’s Bar & Restaurant in San Nicolas, serving Creole squid, homemade fish soup, steamed shrimp, and fresh catch of the day in this charm-filled “dive bar” established back in 1941.

Change things up a little today by venturing into Oranjestad, the capital overlooking the western shores, and joining a Walking Tour of the city’s downtown area. Learn about the history of Aruba while seeing first-hand the Dutch influence that’s apparent throughout the city in fascinating restored landmark buildings. Check out traditional artisan crafts for sale, try some tasty Aruban specialties, and chat with locals. Sit down for top-rated cuts at L.G. Smith's Steak & Chop House, across from the Cruise Ship Dock, which serves Certified Angus Beef ® and an extensive selection of international wines. After the sun sets, sashay to Heart Music Bar for high-octane dancing or Naranjas Bar Discoteca for swinging, swaying salsa beats.

Rent a WaveRunner for high-speed thrills or take advantage of Aruba’s constant trade winds and sail a Hobie Cat. Exercise your wings with some paddle boarding, or learn to windsurf in the same waters that play host to international competitions. In a perfect ending to your Aruba fantasy, set sail for the evening of a lifetime on a catamaran Sunset Dinner Cruise along the scenic coastline while enjoying a Caribbean buffet-style dinner.

ON LOCATION IN
There’s something doubly exciting when visiting a beautiful destination that has also been featured in a major motion picture. It’s like a stamp of approval.
Hawaii – a state that is already endlessly beautiful (the movie business doesn’t have to convince us of that) – has not surprisingly been used as the backdrop to countless films. These are our 3 favorites.
KUALOA RANCH, OAHU
26
LIBERTY TRAVEL | CALL 1.888.571.0604
MAKAPU’U LIGHTHOUSE, OAHU
50 FIRST DATES (2004) This touching romantic comedy starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore uses Hawaii to soften the ultimately sad premise – Lucy Whitmore suffers from short term memory loss, forcing Henry Roth to continually have her fall in love with him every single day. A beautiful – and oftentimes funny – tale about true love fits in perfectly with a location that’s so easy to fall in love with. Mostly shot in Oahu, it took advantage of the Kualoa Ranch where they built the Hukilau Café prominently featured in the film. According to locationshub.com they wanted to showcase the Windward side of the island, which was more rural and lush, unlike the Waikiki side that features lots of resorts and high-rises. Other locations include the Heeia Kea Harbor, the dirt roads of Wahiawa and Waialua, the pineapple fields of the Dole Food Company, the Makapu’u Lighthouse, Dillingham Ranch, and on Sandy Beach – which was originally made famous in the movie From Here to Eternity (1953).
THE DESCENDANTS (2011)
HANALEI BAY, KAUAI
Nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, this Hawaiian love letter of a movie took home the Best Screenplay award. Starring George Clooney and Shailene Woodley, it showcases the complexities facing a family who owns vast amounts of gorgeous Hawaiian land at a very high market price. The dilemma is, of course, to sell or not to sell. Obviously the beauty of Hawaii is on full display. Interestingly, the location scouts and director opted to similarly stick to the Windward side of Oahu for its lush, pastoral look. To truly immerse himself in the region, director Alexander Payne lived in Oahu for eight months to make sure authenticity was in every shot; this must have been some sacrifice! The film got its idyllic look in the sleepy neighborhood of Nu’uanu, but that famous sequence of Matt King (George Clooney) running frantically around a bend in the road was actually shot at the confluence of Old Pali Road and Nuuanu Pali Drive in Honolulu. Other filming locations include the stunning Kipu Ranch in Kauai that you can explore via ATV, Hanalei Bay, and the Tahiti Nui Bar, a local favorite where you can go for a great time.
NORTH SHORE, OAHU
BLUE CRUSH (2002) This quintessential surfing movie follows Anne Marie (Kate Bosworth) on her quest to become one of the great surfers of all-time and who falls in love with a pro quarterback in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl. Romance and incredible surfing sequences ensue. If you’re looking for some waves, this movie may lead the way; though the waves might be massive. Filmed throughout Oahu on the North Shore and Waikiki, the shoot stuck more to the mainstream part of the island and right on location at places like Ted’s Bakery situated on Sunset Beach. But this film is all about those waves. The world-famous – or infamous – Banzai Pipeline was shot for the film. These waves crashing up against Ehukai Beach Park can be rough and mesmerizing, especially in winter. Surfing here can be extremely dangerous due to its shallow reef, so we do not personally recommend surfing here. Watching from the distance is just as swell. If these movies aren’t enough reason to visit this American paradise, there are still a million other reasons to go. From its luxury resorts, endless natural beauty, and some of the world’s best beaches, Hawaii is an unforgettable island getaway. OUTDOOR DINING AROUND THE WORLD
On a beautiful day – and in some of the world’s most beautiful destinations – nothing beats having a great meal outside. And these restaurants make dining outdoors that much more magical.
HARTWOOD
TULUM, MEXICO
Planning a trip to the Playa del Carmen/Cancun area? You might want to just for this. Hartwood, the off-the-beaten path culinary gem in Tulum, takes local, sustainable cooking to new heights – all in a comfortable outdoor setting so you can soak up that tropical weather.
Photos: Hartwood
The daily-changing menu is based on a farm-to-table approach; throughout the week they travel hours into the interior of the Yucatan to find only the freshest and most flavorful ingredients at markets and farms. Open for dinner only Wednesday to Sunday, the restaurant takes walk-ins but reservations are recommended, which are accepted one month in advance. It’ll be a trip to get there, but totally worth it. Its off-the-grid location makes it that much more thrilling of an outdoor dining experience. Solar panels light the scene at night, and they break down all of their waste, creating 100% organic compost that gets used in the mangrove environment and for farming. As for the dishes themselves? Everything is cooked by open fire within a handmade wood burning oven and grill. Sustainable fishing methods also make this restaurant a seafood haven. Working with local programs and Maya farms, the restaurant’s passion for the community is palpable. Through social programs, Hartwood also helps to alleviate hunger in Mexico’s rural regions, so besides creating an unbelievable outdoor dining experience, they’re also always working towards a good cause.

DIONYSOS ZONAR’S ATHENS, GREECE
Photos: Dionysos Zonar's
For a quintessential Greek meal – with some fantastic wine – and that dream-like view of the Acropolis, look no further than Dionysos Zonar’s, a high-end café and restaurant that gives guests high quality cuisine and truly remarkable views. The lit-up Acropolis at night is spectacular as seen from the restaurant that is partly outdoors. Photos of the view, though amazing in and of themselves, really don’t do it justice. The panoramic view looks out to the sacred rock of the Acropolis and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, combining a chic, modern space and modern Greek cooking with the image of ancient Greece just off in the distance. Stunning architecture pairs with the views perfectly, designed strategically by respected architect Prokopios Vasiliadis in the early 1960s. Every last detail is considered. The vast menus showcase the best of Greece with fresh seafood dishes, meats, and spins on the classics.

They have created a simple but complexly flavored menu leaning towards that of the Italian Riviera, reinterpreting Italian classics, while also serving up great French cuisine. Sit outside and take it all in – you’ll be seated up against the stunning Tuileries Garden.
